Need to Find a New Home Church

We moved here from CA earlier this year and left a wonderful church/family behind. I have yet to find anything here that fits our needs. I am looking for an ELCA Lutheran church not too far from the downtown area (I don't mind driving if there is parking available). I prefer one that is not too small and I like keeping my kids with me during the service and not in childcare at their own service.

What can I do next?

Dear A.,
First of all, welcome to Chicago. Many people like our church. It is Catholic, but a friend I met recently was pleased that although she is not Catholic, she is not pressured into anything but is welcomed and participates in many programs/activities. It is a beautiful not too big church on the north side at 5545 N. Paulina, St. Gregory the Great Church. I have been in the parish choir for many years. If music is something you like, I'd say we are among the best parish choir around. We sing every Sunday at the 10:30 AM Mass. There is also a Saturday 4:30 PM and a Sunday 8:30 AM. During the other two Masses, only the cantor sings with the piano or organ; I am one of the cantors. That means we lead the music. We don't have a children's program any more. We had an elementary school which my sons attended, but it closed about 8 years ago when my youngest graduated from elementary school. There is a parking lot behind the church in the courtyard. I believe our web site is
stgregory.net
or you can get to the parish site by going to the choir web site
stgregorychoir.net
Do check us out. The lady I met the other day said when she first entered our place, "It felt like a great big hug." If you do come, please look for me; everyone knows me as I am blind and have a beautiful little guide dog. (I think they like the dog! :))
Best of luck on your search.
Oh, yes,we have a Thanksgiving Mass at 10:30 this Thursday. Our youth choir is participating with the parish choir, and I am the cantor.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is vibrant community with TONS of little kids. I've been going there for about 8 years and in that time the congregation has tripled in size in large part due to the pastor who is amazing and inspired! They have Sunday School classes at 9:30 AM and parents are encouraged to do whatever they are comfortable re: kids in the church service... a nursery is available, but not mandated. Services are at 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM. Only drawback... the church is on Addison about 2 blocks from Wrigley Field with NO parking lot of its own. On non-Cub game days the McDonald's at Clark and Addison has free parking, but on game days it's a little dicey. Best of luck in finding a church home!

We have been parishioners at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church for many years. The priests are extremely dedicated to spreading the Good News and not watering down the teachings of the Church, but teaching the truth. They have a wonderful mom and tots group as well as a group for newlyweds and families with young children that I would highly recommend. There are also a group of men who meet on Saturday mornings at the church for Bible study.

The address is 1850 N. Hermitage (in Bucktown). They have a large parking lot too.

Did you try the ELCA Lutheran Church National website? They have a congregation locator (a tab located in the upper right hand corner of the home page.) http://www.elca.org/
When I was looking for a church last year I had to visit quite a few in order to experience them for myself. I ended up at the Lake Street Church in Evanston. We're very happy there. (But it's not Lutheran)
Good Luck!

Resurrection Lutheran Church is great. It is located on Seminary and School, just north of Belmont and west of Clark Street in the Lakeview neighborhood which is just north of downtown. It is very welcoming and friendly, a great community. It is somewhat small but that is what I like about it, everyone will get to know your name and that of your children.

It is across from Hawthorn School and they use their parking lot so you will always have a place to park if you can't find street parking.

My family and I go to Willow Creek Chicago www.willowcreekchicago.com located at the Auditorium Theater. It is a satelite campus since its main campus is out in the burbs of Barrington. All the info you need is on the website. Church is at 10am with a 946 worship service, which is awesome!

My husband and I churced hopped for a long time in the city.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Blessings,
