Hi Moms,
I want to lose the 10 pounds (or so) that have been hanging around since winter 2010! I'm terrible at dieting. I used to be able to just cut back a bit and lose the weight, but as I get older that's tougher. Do any of you recommend Weight Watchers or another diet that has really worked for you? How is WW different than just doing your own portion control and cutting back? I'm interested in something like South Beach, too, b/c it seems so effective, but I'm not great at cutting out foods I love, especially when I'm making them for the family. Any thoughts, suggestions, stories of success? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I would definitely recommend Weightwatchers. You learn a lot about appropriate food choices doing Weightwatchers and it is a balanced program that you can continue to follow from a maintenance standpoint so you don't backslide when you go back to eating "normal". Good luck!

I did Weight Watchers last year to lose the 20 lbs that just wouldn't go away. I thought I knew how to eat healthy and correct portion sizes, but I learned SO much on WW! It's a real eye-opener to track everything you eat and to start reading labels. It's also shocking when you look up nutritional info. for restaurants!

WW isn't a diet or quick fix, but teaches you the right way to eat for life. You also learn to fit in exercise into your day. WW even gives you points for things like vacuuming. They just want you to be moving in some way for at least 30 minutes.

I did their online only program and achieved my weight goal. I even lost weight on a cruise and that was not with skipping tasty foods. I was always full. Nothing is off-limits with WW. You just learn to budget in the splurge items into a healthy diet.

Can't recommend it highly enough! I did the old program but have heard the new one is even better ... more allowances for protein-filled foods.

i love spark people. my husband and I have both lost weight using their program. you can use their meal suggestions or your own. They encourage healthy choices, have a recipe tracker for cooking at home and a huge data base for calorie tracking.
It is very much a life style change, and often the last ten lbs are are the hardest to lose. good luck

I am in the same boat, and have had 3 personal trainers, not to mention tried everything fad. My problem is self descipline, or the lack there of :-) Not to mention I am a professional baker.

In any case here is my advice-- you can go practical/healthy (which is slow/difficult, but sure to work) or try fads that may work temporarily (sometimes quickly)

Practical--Walking with body weights are great, but you have to keep at it and do it daily for at least an hour. Also having a workout buddy, someone to help hold you accountable/motivate you. In addition to these, have set meals for each day of the week.. write it down! This way you know what you will have, what you have had. No guessing, no room for changing. (boiled eggs, black coffee for breakfast, red grapefruit for snack, salad for lunch-fat free french dressing, protein bar for snack, broiled steak/fish for dinner with another salad- AS MUCH WATER AS YOU CAN STAND ALL DAY) My father lost 20lbs in 2 weeks on that diet.

Latest Fad version, you can try HCG drops I heard are the newest thing (Vitamin stores). There are a million fads I could recommend, however I dont know what your weakness/strengths are. 10 lbs is relatively easy to lose, just be careful with the starvation diets because you will get week at the end or after your goal is reached and gorge yourself. Thus putting back on the weight and maybe then some.

That's my 2 Cents worth M'am......

Have to agree with CAWriterMom, Weight Watchers is the way to go! Even if only 10 lbs. or so, it teaches you how to eat correctly, every day! There's also a TON of recipes on there, so your whole family can eat healthy. I have about 48 lbs. to lose, so much more then you, but I LOVE the W/W plan and have lost 13 lbs. of it so far in about a month. A friend doing the diet with me, has lost 21 lbs. no in 5 weeks. I can't say enough good things about it! Good luck!

Someone recommended "caloriecounter.com" on this site. I signed up and have finally lost the 8 pounds of baby weight that didn't want to leave! It is just calorie counting and it took me 6 weeks to lose 8 pounds, but it is really nice to fit back in the old pants.

One thing that was really helpful to me was having an "end date"--meaning that if I stuck to calorie counting I would be done by May 1--the site calculates the end date. Knowing that if I stuck to the diet for the 6 weeks I wouldn't have to go through another summer feeling overweight (I was pregnant last summer) was really motivating!

Replace any beverage that you drink that has calories with one that has zero calories. I drink diet soda, I drink tons of water, I also like the sugar free lemonade ( they have tons of flavors, I just think lemonade is the best)

Make healthy choices, if you don't have it in the house you can't eat it...Plan for healthy snacks so when you do crave something you have it on hand.

Cut back on carbs...they are basically empty calories.

I do not like the pre packaged replacement meals, I for the most part did not find them overly appetizing and did not usually feel full...more just No longer hungry because they ruined my appetite! = ) I always wanted what I fixed for my family...

Portion control and making sure you are drinking enough along with regular exercise are the key for 10 lbs...I wish that was all I needed to lose = )
Lots of luck to you!

Calorie counting will give you the most freedom while still having sure fire results (if you stick to your calories). WW is basically calorie counting. I gained weight on south beach and felt sick to my stomach while on it. The diet ended when I binged on fruit. Any diet that ends with a binge in my book is very useless. Good luck. I'm on day two of calorie counting and also need to loose 10. Best of luck.

You should try South Beach. You can start out in Phase 2 if you like so you don't have to cut out all carbs. The chemistry behind carb reduction and weight loss cannot be denied. Its also a super healthy way to eat in the long run.

Also-I have just started Konjac root powder AKA Glucomannon and it seems to be working. What it does is expand in your stomach and fill you up enough so you won't binge. Saw it on Dr Oz and then researced it-lots of people seem to like this. There is also Shiratake Noodles-zero calorie and made out of the same thing as Konjac is...you have to get them from specialty or oriental grocers-they are also supposed to be great. A basically flavorless noodle that will take on the flavor of what you add to it. Oz likes this too. He also recommened L-Carnitine for more efficient fat burning.

No I do NOT recommend an 'actual' diet at all. Just cut back on portion sizes, eat healthier foods and you can still eat yummy things too. For example, use less butter and cheese when you cook, use plain yogurt instead of sour cream, eat grilled or baked chicken instead of fried. Instead of cheetohs, eat pretzels, instead of fruit snacks, eat a fresh smoothie. instead of slathering your hamburger with tons of mayo/ketchup/cheese/bacon... reduce the amount of condiments by half. Grab some dark chocolate or nutella on toast for your sweet craving, and you can do the Slim Fast shake for a snack or breakfast too. It will be good for your whole family to make these healthier eating choices together. Just reduce buying junk food and eat more fresh foods.

Especially avoid the South Beach diet, yes you will lose weight, but it makes you feel terrible and your body quickly gains the weight back and then some. What I I recommend is a gym... I've lost 15 lbs in 2 months and I only go to the gym 2 times a week for about 1 1/2 hour each time... approx 30 mins on elliptical and 45 mins on weight machines. Not only have I lost the weight, but I've toned as well... toning is where you see the difference, not just weight loss.

If it's only 10 lbs, keep it simple and do Slim Fast or something similar. The basic problem is, you have to cut back on calories for a month or so to lose the weight, right? And of course, that's hard to do. You just need something that's going to keep you honest during the day - make you not snack, not eat a burger and fries for lunch... for me personally, Slim Fast is super easy when I need to lose a couple of pounds because it's totally idiot-proof. I can have a shake, or I can have a meal bar. Period.

Weight Watchers is great too but with a small amount to lose, it is kind of overkill. It's not like you need a huge lifestyle change, which is what WW is really good at.

I wouldn't recommend a diet, but rather a change in your eating behavior. Cut out/back on cheeses, red meat, chips, cookies, and generally all that food you know is bad but still eat. I'd say no to any food that's been fried and any condiments on sandwiches and stuff (mayo, pestos, etc.) And of course the worse enemy of all - sodas (no diets...your body still processes as sugar)

Good luck!

I'm participating in a 90 day challenge along with my husband to lose the weight. I've lost 9 pounds so far with only 6 more to go and my husband (who wasn't really big), lost 20 pounds so far! We're doing it through the use of meal replacement protein shakes and not only do they taste good, they fill you up. Another friend of mine is doing it too and lost 15 pounds in her first month. Once you've lost all the weight, you just continue with one shake a day to maintain your weight loss. We've been doing the shakes but not following a strict diet otherwise. We still cheat and have ice cream now and then but we're still losing weight! My mother in law is using it too and is thrilled with it! PM me if you'd like some information about what we're using.
