Walk 1 hr per day. You can break it up like 15 minutes here, 15 there, 30 at another time. Walk quickly, as if you are trying to catch up with someone ahead of you. I've dropped two sizes since the start of the year, but only did 30 mins per weekday. I was advised to up it to 30 EVERY day to get to my goal of losing 20 more lbs by memorial day.

You can do it! And don't worry if you don't lose all 20 - just do as much as you can, whatever weight you end up being, is less than you are now!

increase protein, drink LOTS of water, eat fruit, walk every day for about 20-30 minutes...it will be hard to do 19 lbs before then but you should lose some and feel good, too!

Weight Watchers is one of the healthies weight loss life style changes available. Go to the meetings, they give you lots of ideas on how to stay on track. They do not recommend for you lose quite as fast as you want to but it is a healthy weight loss. I have lost 40 pounds on weight watchers and have kept it off. I still have more to lose though.

I have a friend who got great results from this.

Sacred Heart Medical Diet
This 7-day eating plan can be used as often as you like. If correctly followed, it will clean out your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being. After only 7 days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 pounds and possibly 17 pounds, and experience an abundance of energy.
SOUP:

1 or 2 cans of stewed tomatoes
3 plus large green onions
1 large can of beef broth (no fat)
1 pkg. Lipton Soup mix (chicken noodle)
1 bunch of celery
2 cans green beans
2 lbs. Carrots
2 Green Peppers

Season with salt, pepper curry, parsley, if desired, or bouillon, hot or Worcestershire sauce. Cut veggies in small to medium pieces. Cover with water. Boil fast for 10 minutes. Reduce to simmer and continue to cook until veggies are tender.

This soup can be eaten anytime you are hungry during the week. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want. This soup will not add calories. The more you eat, the more you will lose. You may want to fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during the day.

DRINKS:
Unsweetened juices
Tea (also herbal)
Coffee
Cranberry juice
Skim milk
Water, water, water

DAY ONE
Any fruit (except bananas). Cantaloupes and watermelon are lower in calories than most other fruits. Eat only soup and fruit today.

DAY TWO
All vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed with fresh raw, cooked or canned veggies. Try to eat green leafy veggies and stay away from dry beans, peas or corn. Eat veggies along with the soup. At dinnertime tonight reward yourself with a big baked potato and butter. Don't eat any fruits through today.

DAY THREE
Eat all the soup, fruit and veggies you want. Do not have a baked potato. If you have eaten as above for three days and not cheated, you should find that you have lost 5-7 pounds.

DAY FOUR
Bananas and skim milk: Eat at least 3 bananas and drink as much milk as you can today, along with the soup. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates, as is the milk but on this particular day, your body will need the potassium and carbs. Proteins and calcium to lessen the cravings for sweets.

DAY FIVE
Beef and tomatoes: you may have 10 to 20 ounces of beef and a can of tomatoes, or as many as 6 tomatoes on this day. Eat the soup at least once today.

DAY SIX
Beef and veggies, eat to your heart's content of the beef and veggies today. You can even have 2-3 steaks if you like with green leafy veggies but no baked potato. Be sure to eat the soup at least once today.

DAY SEVEN
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice and veggies, again, be sure to stuff yourself and eat the soup. You can add cooked veggies to your rice if you wish.

By the end of the 7th day, if you have not cheated on this diet, you should have lost 10 to 17 pounds. If you have lost more than 17 pounds, stay off the diet for two days before resuming the diet again.

This diet is fast. The secret lies within the principle that you will burn more calories than you take in. It will flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being. This diet does not lend itself to drinking any alcoholic beverages at any time. Because of the fat build-up in your system. Go off the diet at least 14 hours before any intake of alcohol.

Due to the variety of digestive systems in individuals, this diet will affect everyone differently. After day three, you will have more energy than when you began, if you do not cheat. After being on the diet for several days, you will find that your bowel movements have changed. Eat a cup of bran or fiber. Although you can have black coffee with this diet, you may find that you don't need caffeine after the third day.

The basic fat burning soup can be eaten anytime you feel hungry during the seven days. Eat as much as you wish. Remember the more you eat, the more you will lose. You can eat broiled, boiled or baked chicken instead of the beef. Absolutely no skin on the chicken. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef on only one of the beef days. You need the high protein in the beef for the other days.

Continue on the diet as long as you wish and feel the difference both mentally and physically.

DO NOT - DO NOT
No bread, alcohol, carbonated drinks (including diet drinks). Remember, absolutely no fried foods.

DO - DO - DO - DO
Drink plenty - at least 6 to 8 glasses - of water a day, as well as any combination of the following beverages: black coffee, unsweetened fruit drinks, cranberry juice and skim milk.

This diet comes from the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital that is used for overweight heart patients in order to lose weight rapidly, usually prior to surgery.

Drink plain unflavored water, no sodas or alcohol. Don't eat anything fried or with refined sugar. Eat smaller portions and eat more often (every 2 hours eat something small and healthy). If you don't get any exercise, at least try to ride a bike and a stationary one is just fine. Start out with 10 minutes and build yourself up 5 minutes each time. Before long, you'll be able to do an hour in no time flat. Good luck and be consistent.

Hi T.,
Good for you for losing 60 pounds in 10 months! That is awesome! But remember that the reason the doctor is wanting you to lose weight is so that you can be as healthy as possible during this experience. I am a Registered Dietitian, and the recommendation I generally give my clients is to work on and expect no more than 1-2 pound loss per week. Often times this does not sound very exciting (and it will only allow you about 8 pound off by the 25th of next month). This is what is realistic! Do not feel guilty or like you have failed if you are not able to lose 19 pounds by then. That is where so many women fall into the trap of feeling like they “Just can’t lose weight”. You can lose weight, but it may take longer than the doctor said. I am not sure why he gave you such a short period to lose that much. I know that there are those out there who will report losing 5 or more pounds per week, but what happens when you deplete certain energy stores in your body, you also lose water (glycogen is where the body stores carbohydrates for energy and each glycogen store has water molecules attached – when you deplete the stores you lose the water). This water weight loss shows up quickly on the scales, but is gained back immediately when you go back to eating normally. It shows up on the scales but is not true weight loss. OK, this is not answering you question, but I always like to give people realistic expectations.
What have you done to lose the 60 pounds? You are doing awesome so far! I don’t know what you have been doing, but make sure to be exercising. If you are not currently in an exercise program, walking is a great place to start. Also, doing some strength training helps to boost your metabolism. Exercises with dumbbells are great. Also, watch what you drink. Make sure to drink plenty of water and limit calories from beverages (even juice). Calories from liquids do not satisfy you the way calories from solids foods. Increase your fruit and vegetable intake. Focus on getting in at least five a day. Before you start focusing on limiting foods, make sure you are getting in the ones that your body needs. Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products, such as skim milk or fat free yogurt or cottage cheese. Most women do not get in the calcium and Vitamin D they need, so it is good to try to fit these in. Watch your portions, ask yourself if you are really hungry, and try to limit calories. I am not sure your height or weight, but 1200-1500 calories is a good general range for most women to lose weight on. Also, try keeping a food journal. This may help you pinpoint areas that you can improve upon. Sometimes just writing it all down helps.
Also, start gearing your mind on eating for a healthy lifestyle. Diets are started and diets are stopped – over and over again. Begin changing habits so that when you lose the weight, you keep it off and don’t have to lose it again. If you are interested, check Real Living Nutrition. The Balance Program, the core program, is an online lifestyle workshop that empowers individuals to make changes to improve their health and achieve lasting weight-loss results. It focuses on balanced nutrition and exercise and provides regular coaching and monitoring to keep people on track. I am a provider (provider #3008) and work with clients online. Hi!! I didn't read all of the other responses yet, but I wanted to repond...I am a 32 year old who had her 6th child in 2006 and I weigh below 140. I lost all of my extra weight when I started eating healthy. One of the main reasons people are sick today is because of the junk they eat. Also, I stopped overeating...I eat small portions 5 times a day. I drink mostly water. I rarely eat sugar or flour. Another good idea is not to eat later than 6:30 or 7 at night. I eat a good healthy breakfast like oatmeal, grits, or fruit or eggs, I eat a fruit, handful of nuts, or a veggie for a snack. I eat salad most days for lunch...I change what goes with my lettuce...sometimes eggs, sometimes olives, fish, tuna, chicken, and/or always several small servings of veggies. I eat a small healthy snack in the afternoon and for supper we eat light...fish, sometimes a tiny portion of lean beef or chicken, and always a veggie or two. I always try to get a little bit of exercise in also every day.
GOOD LUCK!!

Hi, I'm M. L. in Miss. and I'd like you to know a few things about me. When I was 25 I had corrective surgery and an hysterectomy. The surgery was a blessing. I had swelling, pain, and mental problems because of hormone problems before, but the surgery was a 'miracle' cure of sorts. I already had 2 children and didn't want any more, so when I had this surgery, I realized it was for my best health.
My best wishes for you.

Hello T.! My one quick suggestion to you is to focus on your overall health and not your weight. I, too, have back problems, I recently lost 35 pounds to try and alleviate the pain! I don't have much time to type now, but please email me if you are interested in chatting some more! Focus on making sure that you have good blood pressure, that you are getting the proper nutrients, that you get at least 20 mins of walking or something easy on the body done a day and ask your doctor about blood sugar levels. If you have history of diabetes in the family, high blood sugar levels will definitely prevent healing! Good luck, Sweetie! Nothing is impossible and this is as much for your son as for you!

I saw someone elsa mentioned Weight Watchers and I totally agree! I am currently using the Weight Watchers system (2 kids and 40lbs-let me tell ya) and I lost 9lbs the first 2 weeks. I weigh in later today so hopefully I can add a few more to that! It was a bit difficult the first week breaking bad snacking habits but now I pretty much eat what I want in moderation and substitution- ie equal for sugar and 100 cal packs for oreos. It really is a great system and VERY easy to follow. Good luck!

T.,

I had a hysterctomy myself and was overweight a few years back. I can appreciate what your doctor suggested about you losing your weight before the surgery. My doctor suggested I join weight watcher's. He advised me that if I didn't, I'd see an increase in weight of about 30 pounds. And 30 pounds after the fact, I finally listened. I joined and lost 38 lbs.

I think WW is having free registration right now and meetings cost $10-$12 a week depending on what plan you use. I lost 5.8 pounds my first week and continued to see at least a 1.5 to 2.5 a week after that on a consistant basis. It was only when I was lazy that I didn't lose on those weeks.

Your life will be an absolute turn around after surgery and you're going to feel like a million bucks!

Have fun with the new you and God bless,

While losing weight is important to improving your health, losing so much weight in such a short amount of time can be very dangerous, especially if you have other medical conditions. Did your doctor make any suggestions on appropriate diet and exercise? I would make sure you have a well balanced diet, cut back on caffiene, increase your water intake, and start walking a mile or two a day as a start.

I have lost a lot of weather by counting my carbs and just allowing 31 carbs at my meals and 16 for snacks three times at day. The number one thing you must not do is to skip meals you body will think it is staving and start to hold on to what food and calories you do give it. Drink lots of water and exercise even if it just going outside with your kids and playing ball. Your gaol her is to burn more calories then you take in. Your body does not know the differance from playing with your kids to 100 set ups. Just get it moving.

I to had to have a hysterectomy at a young age, I fought againest for 7-8 years brfore I finally gave in. It has changed my life for the better. I don't know how come I waited so long after I had the surgery. The best thing I can tell you is after the surgery get up and move around even when it hurts. The faster that you get up and move around the faster you will get well. Your body will tell you when you are doing to much. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope everything goes good.

T., Hello. I am quite a bit older than you. I had my hysterectomy when I was 43yrs. Now, I am 50 yrs. I don't feel or look my age, thank goodness. I was about 15 lbs overweight about 4 months ago. I talked to my doctor and he said the older we get the harder it can be for us to loose weight! He suggested that I walk! 13 minutes a day. It gets my heart rate up and then I believe it speeds up the metabolism.I have a walking exercise machine, Gazelle, is what it is. If the weather isn't good for walking I get on the Gazelle and do my daily walking. This simple exercise has taken about 10 lbs off me. I also, drink lots of water to keep my system flushed. Yogart with benefiber is good too and comes in some great flavors. Just remember to eat as healthy as you can and weight should come off. I also have a bad back and have had it for yrs. It limits my activities but I continue to try everyday. Good luck with your weight lose and surgery. Do exactly what the doctor tells you to do as this will help in a speedy recovery.

T., it isn't easy but, commitment and determinationare what you need the most. When I was told I was type 2 diabetic, my "lifestyle" had to change. I chose sugar free dark chocolate (Hersheys) for my sweet tooth. I kept them in the freezer. Total carbs is the thing to watch as well as staying away from deserts and such. Cutting portion size and eating a piece of fruit or raw vegies between meals is key.
If I eat more than 45 carbs at a meal I gain weight. The diabetic dieticion says 45-60 at a meal is acceptable. In one year I lost 40 pounds. I am a 63 yr. old grandmother and walking is my exercise of choice because I have a bad back.
I am also a 16 yr. cancer surviver and in good health so I can enjoy the grandsons ( 10yr. & 12yr. ). They will be spending their summer vacation with my husband & me and we can hardly wait. God bless you.

I started with 1200-1600 staying more at 1200 but if i had a day i went to 1600 I didn't beat myself up for it. Then I started moving, no matter what i was doing cooking i was doing leg lifts, i would do pushups against the wall. As i walked around the house i would do lunges, I would also lay on the floor and do crunches. Walking is great also. I hope some of this helped good luck with your surgery.

Hi T.!
On Christmas Day 2 and 1/2 years ago, I spent ten hours in emergency surgery to repair an aortal aneurysm. Upon my release, the surgeon told me "You WILL lose weight". I was told by him that I needed to work up to being able to walk 45 minutes a day. At first I walked in my house because it was cold outside and I had gotten bronchitis immediately after I got home. I lived three blocks from the high school's track, so I would put on headphones and walk down there. One day my next door neighbor was sitting on her porch and asked if she could walk with me. She is now one of my best friends and my walking buddy!
I lost 50 lbs by counting calories and walking. I would limit myself to 1200 to 1300 calories a day. I would eat Lean Cuisines, SmartOnes and Healthy Choice dinners. If I couldn't measure it's calories, I didn't eat it. I believe that it worked for me because the carbs were regulated in these meals as well. HOWEVER...
this was just a temporary fix and didn't solve the problem. I eventually went back to eating regular foods, and my portions gradually got bigger without my even realizing it (and so did I). So, I have tried a permanent fix that is working. I eat what I like, just lots less of it. I put my meals on a salad plate instead of a dinner plate. If you put your fork down between bites and chew each bite slowly, you get full faster. Drink lots of water and exercise 45 minutes per day. After surgery, your recovery time will be lots less painful and you will bounce back faster.
There are so many different things that work for different people but I believe that in order to lose weight and keep it off, you have to make new habits for a lifetime. Find what works for you and you will be able to stick with it. I wish you the best of luck in your surgery and a speedy recovery!

Hi T.,

Ouch! Losing 20 pounds safely in 30 days won't be easy, but a good starting point would be to start drinking 6-8 glasses of purified water daily and to cut out the sugar, potatoes, breads and replace them with fresh fruit and vegetables. I do not recommend using Splenda as a sugar substitute as it causes kidney damage (been there myself). If you fry your foods, use extra virgin olive oil. It is much healthier to broil, bake, or steam your foods. If you do fast food joints, don't go there anymore (or take your son)and stay away from processed foods - way too many preservatives. Another thing highly recommended is walking at least 10,000 steps daily. Having a pedometer helps keep you on track. As I have no idea what your diet is like now, I can only recommend that and/or a lifestyle change: http://www.CinchInches.com

Hope that helps...

Good luck & God Bless

PS The weight loss will also help with decreasing the pain in your back and feet. The 20+ pounds I lost made a significant difference in the way I now feel.
