Anyone in the Palatine/Arl Hts area have a recommendation for a good Gastro or Neuro specialist for Celiac disease and other gluten caused issues?? My husband needs to find a good doctor so he can be diagnosed-by testing by other than a naturopath or chiro doc,(unless they are in the United Healthcare network) so we can go apply for SSI-he hasn't worked full time in about 5 yrs and we need to find a way to pay bills other than just me!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you! you have been very helpful to us. I need to get researching and see who is covered under UHC and which docs we can reasonably try if not in the network. Hopefully I can post happy news soon!

I work at the GI center at Northwest Community Hospital and we have some excellent gastro specialists there. If you go on www.nch.org and search for gastroenterologists you will find them all. They are all in the Arlington Heights area. You will have to check with them as far as insurance purposes go. I highly recommend any one of them. Dr. Mani Mahndavian, Dr. Mary Kane, Dr. Anita Spiess, Dr. Kyoko Misawa, Dr. Willis Parsons, Dr. Yegelwel (to name a few). Our GI center was featured in Chicago magazine last month in the top hospitals/doctors issue. Good luck!

I believe there is a specialty/specialist for this at University of Chicago. You might want to call there to find out as this has a genetic component that I think can be tested for.

There is a gluten free store in Northbrook on Waukegan near Dundee.

Hi L.- I have celiac and have seen Dr. Loren White at Northwest Gastroenterology (same practice as the other recommendation). Also, Northwest Community Hospital has a GI Center he may be able to get an appt. at. Is you husband still eating gluten? He needs to be eating gluten on a regular basis to have the tests come back accurately. If you want more information let me know. I was just diagnosed a year ago and have learned quite a bit.

Editing to add: Rush University just added an adult celiac disease program. They work closely with the local support group so they should be on top of things. Here is the link: http://www.rush.edu/rumc/page-1175113041252.html

We are fortunate enough to have one of the best celiac disease centers in the United States right in our backyard. THe University of Chicago Disease Center is the one of the most acclaimed in treatment and research of the disease. Unfortunately, many physicians still have little knowledge of this condition. They estimate that 90% of the population is still undiagnosed.

The adult gastroenterologist at U of C is Carol Semrad, MD.
The phone number there is ###-###-####

Hi L.-

Your regular MD should be able to do a simple blood test for the official diagnosis. My husband is a celiac and was recently retested (he was under the belief that a person outgrows it which it totally untrue so I had him get tested again). It's a very easy blood test and results are back within a few days.

Good luck--it's a tough daily battle to deal with.
