Here is my situation. I had a baby last May. After the baby I had lots of bleeding. I bled till August. They had given my the birth control shot and a week later I went back for its booster. Anyway the shot would of been up on Oct. 18. I decided not to get another one. I had my period Oct 27, I have not had another one since. My OB doesn't seem to concerned, does anyone else think this is right? I don't want to get pregnant this minute but I would like the option later in the future and don't want something to be wrong. Could I still get pregnant now even w/out periods.. Don't get me wrong.. not having periods is wonderful! I just don't want it to come back and bite me later. Any body have any knowledge to enlighten me with. I have had to take a pregnancy test every so often just to make sure I am not. I have every now and then period cramping and raging hormones but no bleeding?

What can I do next?

Hello, I had a baby in June... and have only had one "period" since he was born. I will spot for a day if I forget to take my pill the day before... haven't figure that one out yet. But I have never really had a normal period... when I was 16 I was put on birth control to try to fix this problem and it didn't help - actually I ended up with my first little one about 9 mo later in 1994. I have 4 kids total - three of which were born after 2001 when I was told I had P.O.S. and that I wouldn't be able to any more kids without assistance (was told that by 2 different doctors), and I only had the help of my hubby with all of my pregnancies!

Also, my sister has five kids and also was told she has P.O.S. She doesn't have regular periods eather... we both can go for years without having one. It can make having a baby more of a challange. But I have found that my hubby is more then willing to help me "bet" the odds. Actually, we have both found if we have one we'd better go take a test cause most likely it means are expecting.

Plus, sometimes it take your body a while to get back into it's normal flow again. If you nursed your baby that can also affect how long you go without one too. If your doctor isn't concerned I wouldn't be... but if you still are, ask her/him to set you up a hormone test. It will let you know if your body is still producing the right hormore levels. Mine does, I just don't have periods. I've learned to kinda like it... saves me money in the long run. :)

When it comes to the shot... sometimes it takes a while to get out of your system. I was told to stop the shot a year before you wanted to have a baby... cause sometimes it takes that long get your hormone levels back to the right levels.

Oh, stress can also stop you body from having periods... so don't stress out about it. Enjoy your little one!!!

Been there. I took the depo shot after I had my older son. I can't say for sure that it is ALL related but here is what happened to me. I bled for 6 months solid. The docs just kept throwing more and more depo into me. I gained 6 pounds a month. The doc told me to exercise more and cut down on my eating. This is the same doc that told me to go and get a big mac while I was pregnant because I couldn't gain weight. Anyway, I eventually went to see another doc. I was fed up. They took me off the depo and put me on premarin. No help at all. Ultimately, I got fed up back then. I quit taking everything! The doc that I had with my 19 month old was wonderful. I told him what I had done so many years ago. He said that he couldn't be happier. That once I stopped filling my body with those things, it straightened itself out. When I went to him, I was trying to get pregnant again. I had been trying for some time with no luck. With an exam and some testing, he discovered that I had polyps in my uterus and cysts on my ovaries. I don't know if these things are related to the shot or not. Anyway, I had surgery in August and still I didn't get pregnant until the end of December. I did have a healthy boy. The road to get him wasn't easy. I tell everyone not to ever get that shot. Some people do fine with it but it's a huge risk. The booklets and stuff don't always tell you about people like me with the stuff I went through. I had my oldest son 9 years ago. I have only just begun to lose the weight that I gained so long ago. It was like it was glued on. I have lost 36 pounds of it now. I have another 20 or so to go. Use condoms or something for now. Let your body heal completely before you throw to much at it. Then look for a method that it more studied. Research it first. Then talk to your doc. I have found that the discussions go easier when you have some idea of what you're talking about. Let your body repair itself first. For me it was the only way and then I still had to have surgery and such. Good luck to ya! If I can answer any questions for ya about my experience please drop me a line. I will be happy to help any way I can. Shannon G.

Hmmmmmmm... I went for about 10 months with no period. Mine turned out to be insulin resistance. I have since had a baby with no hormonal treatments of any kind. I also heard PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrom) is a cause for missing a period for an extended frame of time. Some side effects to PCOS are massive weight gain, random hair growth (like on your neck or chin), and cramp-like pain from the cysts growing & possibly rupturing. Also no periods & mood swings. I would check out both of these possibilities if you're worried about having children in the future, or rather, not having children in the future. Let us know how it goes! :) --A.

S.,

The shot can make you have irregular periods. If you don't want to become pregnant, I think you should use a back up method, just until things get regulated. You can definitely get pregnant without having a period.

are you breastfeeding?

i didn't get my period until about a year after each of my babies were born, it's called lactational amenorrhea or something like that.

you can ovulate before your period comes, so you could get pregnant 2 weeks before your next period... which of course you can't calculate if you have no cycle at the moment...

but i have no idea about birth control and how that affects everything. we use natural timing...

I have a very irregular cycle as well. It is fine not having a period until you are trying to get pregnant or not get pregnant because it is very difficult to determine when you ovulate. According to my professionals, you can still ovulate and not get a period so you need to be very intune with your body to identify the signs of ovulation. I go to call my OB every 3 months if I don't get a period so she can put me on a steroid to induce a period. She said it can increase the risk of ovarian cancer if you don't get a period for too long continuously.

Your body may just be working itself out after the birth experience. I didn't have a period for 13months after my second child and I only nursed for 3months.

I hope this gives you some insight and lets you know that you are not alone :)

YES! you can absolutely get pregnant w/out having a period - it happened to me. Granted, I had only gone about 3 mos without a period, but at some point (obviously) I ovulated and became pregnant.

I'm surprised that your obgyn didn't tell you a lot of people don't have a period with the shot. That one you had in October was probably because your body was still adjusting to the shot. Usually, that's a lot of the reason why people opt for the shot. I tried it for that reason, but it did the opposite for me and I bled for the whole 9 months that I stayed on it. Just be careful, there are side effects to it, and one very very common one is ovarian cysts. I usually have no problems at all taking different kinds of birth control and meds as far as side effects go, but I did develop a cyst, as did a few of my friends. If you start having bladder control issues, that could be a sign. I had major issues with bladder control, but I was so young, only about 19 when it was going on so I guess I just was in naive denial. Eventually the cyst ruptured and I ended up in the ER.

I was on the depot provera shot for several years. It took me over a year to start having periods again so that we could start trying to get pregnant. I was having all of my PMS, but no periods, so we started doing ultrasounds and found out that I WAS ovulating even though I was NOT bleeding - that is when our trying finally paid off (we now have 8 month old twin boys!), so watch out.

S.,
i, many years ago, used the depo prevera shot. i don't know if that's what you had or not, but what i can tell you is that when i stopped getting the shot, i didn't have a period for at least a year, but it might even have been a year and a half. if your doctor isn't worried, i don't think you should be either. if i remember correctly, it may take up to a year before you are able to become pregnant if you wanted, however, if you're not ready, probably you should still take the proper precautions. also, i'm sure if you made only a simple call to your doctor about the periods and if/when you could become pregnant, they would let you know. you could probably even call planned parenthood for that type of question since they deal a lot with birth control and side affects and that's just what they do.
still, you probably could do an online search on the specific drug/birth control and there you should find the correct information and probably a faq section.
good luck. hope this helps.

Hey, S., I was on the depo provera shot for 5 years (due to chronic ovarian cysts). It took me about a year to start having regular periods again. I got the hormones and mood swings, alright, but like you no bleeding. I actually found out I was pregnant right after my first period, so I would continue to take pregnancy tests just to be on the safe side. I didn't know I was pregnant until I was 10 weeks along because I brushed off not having a period. The female body is crazy sometimes. The depo shot can really have lasting effects. I hope this was helpful!

Hey S....ok, you only had one shot, correct? Was it Depo provera? Even with just one injection it can mess up your periods. Most will return fairly quickly, some do not. But if you arent using another form of birth control, you could end up pregnant again. I work for an OBGYN for 5 years, and I would suggest that you have them do a blood test to make sure you arent pregnant and then ask about a med called Provera, to kick start a period and then start another birth control... I hope this helps... good luck

Are you nursing? Many women don't have periods until they stop. If you aren't nursing, I'm not sure what to tell you, except that I'd keep taking those pregnancy tests, just in case! I have a friend who got pregnant before she had her first period, even though her child was more than a year old. Wish I could be more help.

You absolutely can get pregnant without a period!!! I am living proof. I am now 14 weeks pregnant and did so without a period. Two years ago I got off birth control to try and start having another baby. I had scattered periods and then had a weird feeling about pregnancy on Valentines Day and here we are! From the ultrasound I got pregnant in January and I did not have a period in either December of January. Good luck!

I work for an OB/GYN and we have pt's with this problem all the time...it will take some time for the shot to get out of your system. However, you should alway use a back up method just in case. If you are not comfortable with your doctors answer you should seek a second opinion.

I think what you're gong through is normal when you take the shots. I took them and it took me almost a year after I stopped before I saw another period. Which, as you said, was wonderful but also made me anxious. I would suggest that you use another form of birth control if another child is not what you want right now.

This may be a hormonal issue. I would talk to your ob/gyn about puting you on some type of pill to get you regulated again. It is not normal that I know of to not have a period for 6 months even after you stopped the shot. Yes even though you don't have your period right now you can still get pregnant because you may still ovulate. If your doctor still doesn't seem to think anything is wrong I would find another ob/gyn to see you and get put on a hormone pill.

I was on the Depo shot for 3yrs and I stopped usin it 2000 and didn't get pregnant til June 2001. That pregnancy ended in miscarriage. In September of 2001 I again got pregnant for my son. In 3 yrs i think i had a total of 5 maybe 6 periods. That shot messes with your body worse than anything I've been on. I would try an alternitive birth control if you and your doctor can find one. I hope things work out for you.

Just because a woman is not menstruating doesn't mean she is not ovulating and can become pregnant. Perhaps our doctor's office has a nurse you can talk to? Or change doctor's with a recommendation from a friend. If you are not using any birth control, get your maternity clothes ready again.....
