Ok so I wasn't thinking about these during Christmas, to get one before hand. But my g/f has the Nook that she just got and so far loves it. My SIL has the Kindle, but didnt have that much to tell me about it yet. What are the opinions out there. I just really started reading not too long ago now that I'm not working and have 3 kids, it's my down time. So It would be a decent investment for me I think. I just dont' know which one to choose. I like the idea that the Nook has a 'lend" app that lets you borrow from another nook user. I believe the all have the ability to borrow from the library. I dont need color. But I usually read at night. So does one do better than the other as far as backlight. I wouldn't want to have to attach a book light to it in order to read, which I do right now with a normal book. So any advice, opinions would be appreciated. Oh and how hard is it to download the books themselves. I think they all go thru some certain website and what are the prices generally? It's a hard decision for me b/c i'm not sure what one is better or if they're all about the same. Thanks Ladies :)

What can I do next?

When I did my research between the Nook and the Kindle. I opted for the Kindle for my hubby. The nook did not get the news papers and the Kindle did. I can not remember everything but I went for the Kindle and my hubby loves it. I got from Amazon.com. You can look up the differences on line.

I have had the Kindle since they first came out, and I *love* it. IMO, they're better than the Nook. With the Kindle, you can download a sample (free) of the first chapter of a book to see if you like it. And there are TONS of free/ridiculously cheap books out there, too. It's true the Kindle doesn't have the backlight, but it works to its advantage because I can read comfortably in any light, including direct sun. To me, the Kindle seems to be easier to handle than the Nook because it's easier to type out what book you want and download all from the Kindle. And if you need to, you can change the landscape setting & the font size/type to suit you.

I have a friend who worked in Barnes and Nobles, and she knows quite a bit about the Nook - and she still chose the Kindle. :) With the Kindle, you do have to have an LED light attached to it to read. *shrug* not too bad.

Newspapers, PDF, books from Amazon or from other sites (those sites you can download to your computer, then put in a document file, and then directly download to your Kindle). So... IMO, Kindle beats Nook. The Nook has all these bells and whistles - but it still can't compare to the Kindle. The Kindle has 3G and wi-fi free, and has a very reasonable cost. PLUS, if you want to get cute, you can buy skins to customize your Kindle. :)

I just got a Nook for Xmas and my mom got a Kindle. We haven't set them up yet. However, whichever one you get, get the "3G" version. That makes it easy to download books wherever you are as long as there is cell phone coverage. You don't need to hook it up to your computer, etc. There have been previous posts with this same question so you might be able to find previous responses in the archives.

I got a Nook for Christmas and I love it! You can view samples of first chapters on a Nook, just like on a Kindle, and the Nook I got does have Newspapers available for download too. I was REALLY happy about the backlight! I don't really have anything to compare it too, since I don't have a Kindle, but my Nook is amazing :)

I have a Nook color and it's great. The back light is great for reading in the dark. The lend feature is ok. You can only lend each book once (!) and it can only be lent for 14 days. You can get books from the library. You CANNOT get books from the library with the Kindle. The digital rights management on the kindle CANNOT read the format of library ebooks.

The nook also has newspapers and magazines. We actually have a nook and kindle as well. I far prefer the nook color because of the ease of the touch screen.

I have the Nook and I LOVE it! I read all the time and it totally beats buying paperbooks filling up my house :) The other ladies comments weren't completely true - you can sample all the books and you can read newspapers and magazines on the Nook. There is Nook color and the regular Nook. I have the regular Nook (the color one was not available when I bought mine) and it has e-ink which makes it look exactly like reading a book in paper. You do have to use a light with this version, but I feel like it doesn't strain my eyes like something that was backlit. The Nook color is backlit and the screen looks much like a mini laptop and you would not have to use a booklight for it. You can "lend" books with the Nook but you have to be careful because not all books are lendable - you have to make sure that the "lend me" icon is next to the title. As much as I LOVE my Nook, I'm sure that the Kindle is very comparable and you will probably be happy with either one. Although I do think that the Nook and Kindle are the best ereaders and you will be sorry if you buy anything other than those two.

The Kindle now has a case/cover with a built-in retractable light for reading in bed in the dark. No batteries required for it, it somehow works off the kindle itself. I've ordered it for my kindle, just waiting to receive it.
