We are expecting a baby girl in June. A couple of years ago, we re-did our second bedroom with deep red walls, cream carpet, and white trim, closet doors, and shelves. It's a beautiful room, and since we put so much effort into it, we're trying to avoid re-decorating everything, but we're having a hard time finding a color scheme that will match. I really love the baby safari animal theme for bedding, etc. I have found some crib bedding that is mostly light pink and tan with some red accents in it. We want to keep the room light and airy looking, so are trying to avoid any other dark colors to help offset the walls. Could I work with some pink in the room - perhaps a light pink? - , or will that clash or look silly? Or would it be best to try and use more neutral colors that aren't as girly? Some of the safari bedding and decor are browns, yellows, greens, light blues...they are very cute, but are gender neutral and i feel like they lean more towards boy than girl....
Any thoughts? I was hoping some of you are more creative than me :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I'm feeling more optimistic that there are alot of great ideas out there. I almost feel like I'm going to have to buy a few different choices, bring them home, and look at them in the room. I even found a couple sets that had some lavender in them and I thought that could actually work instead of the pink. I don't want to drive myself crazy over this, but if I don't try out a few styles, I'm worried the whole thing could go terribly wrong :)

Don't worry so much about theme, folks have great suggestions below. There will be so many of her own personality things that will come into play, keep it simple and color is OK. Once she starts drawing/painting, you'll want space for her own art.

Speaking of art, we used a children's book illustration underlying theme, which has varying styles of art on the walls from children's books.

Good luck!

I think you are right on...Your colors sound pretty. Go online and look at Pottery Barn Kids, Babysuper mall, babies r us, to get additional ideas. As long as some of the bedding/decor has the red in it, I have no doubt it will look great.

You can hang white or light pink shears on the windows and - mosquito netting style around the crib, and basinet area. That will soften the red a bit and mark the room as more feminine. I don't think red and pink will clash at all. The red makes a great backdrop for the other colors and you found something that will tie it all together. It sounds like a fun room to be a kid in, not just a baby. You picked something that will mature with her. It would be cool if you could get a dark green, jungle mural painted on one wall with a girlie baby lion playing with her firends like Nala - or I had a friend that did monkeys playing in a tree and painted "no more monkies jumping on the bed" on the wall.

I haven't read the other responses yet, but if you have red walls you could maybe do lady bugs? Or have like pink cherry blossoms painted around the walls or do something pink and white floral with the red walls.

One idea would be just to get nice cream bedding to go with the carpet and then cream curtains, then with what you accessorize with will make the room mor girly, You can paint the wooden letters for her name, except when you go to hang them, attach pretty ribbon to it tied in bows at the top, you should be able to find some type of ribbon to tie it all togethor, every craft store has tons of ribbon, Also if you like butterflies, when my daughter was little we purchased these butterfly stickers from Highlights catalog, they are all beatiful colors and they are made from a thick vellum that you bend at the center making it a 3D effectand stick to the wall that way it makes it look like butterflies have landed on the wall.
You may also want to look for other "girlie" things, for the first few years, my mother inlaw had bought be 3 old fashioned bunting hats. Instead of having my daughter wear them I used them for decoration in her room.
There are lots of wonderful ideas out there, google baby girl bedrooms and I'm sure you will be able to find something that fits. BTW I LOVE any color red walls, I think it will look great. Good luck

Well it's not safari, but I'm guessing you could find some floral patterns that have some red in it to avoid repainting. I would also suggest Pottery Barn or Laura Ashley. Pink would probably work, it would just have to be the right pink, you'd have to check it out in the room probably. My other thought was that if you plan on having more kids, you may consider going with one of the neutral safari themes so that you can reuse it in the event you have a boy. I'm not saying don't buy a crib set, but you don't use it for very long! It's not all the practical, but they're so darn cute they are hard to resist, so I would think about getting one you could reuse!

My mother and MIL made a crib bumper and curtains for my daughter with a nice tropical, parrot-themed fabric. It had plenty of red in it, but also a lot of green and some blue and yellow. I also attached some of the fabric to the back of a clear plate with Mod Podge, and hung it on the wall along with a parrot themed cross-stitch picture I made and had matted and framed. We only had one red wall in that room (the walls were each a different color - royal blue, fire-engine red, hunter green, basic purple, with yellow ceiling and in the nook area, to lighten it up), but it looked really nice. It was a fun room, that grew with her. I liked the parrots because I didn't feel they were too "babyish". She liked them right up until we moved, when she was 7. Your room sounds beautiful. The parrots might tie in nicely with a jungle theme - you could add other jungle animals, but get the red accents from the parrots. Let us know what you decide. I'd like to hear about it!

It sounds like a beautiful room! And I can completely understand that you wouldn't want to change it. But you may want to rethink the color on the walls...red may be a bit too stimulating for your baby's delicate senses.
