Just wondering...my last annual pap was a year ago, so I am due for one. But, I am now 4.5 months pregnant...do they do paps on pregnant women? Should I be requesting one at my next visit or will they wait unil after I give birth? Thanks!

What can I do next?

They can do one now. If at the time of delivery it has been more than a year...they will want one first...along with a chlamydia screening...it is law.

My guess would be no. I have never heard of that being done while pregnant. Since you will be at the doctor you can just ask about it.

Our OB did pap at the start of all my pregnancies as part of the routine tests they run. Ask your OB, you too may have already gotten a pap.

At my first Obg-yn appointment they did a pap smear on me without me asking. I think its pretty much routine, just like the STD testing and for Strep. Just ask and I'm sure they'll give you one. At my 6 week checkup they also told me since I had one done during pregnancy I didn't have to get one for another year, YEAH!

I had my pap done when I went in for my first prenatal. You should do it-you will be fine! Congrats on your pregnancy!

It is common to have a pap smear done while pregnant. I'm actually surprised they haven't done a pap on you as part of the routine pregnancy procedure. With both if mine, it was performed. At your next, just ask. Either it was something overlookedor its not part of their routine. I will tell you that a pap will be done at your post natal exam.

You should have had one at your first ob appointment
Call and ask if they did. I had so much going that day, that I literally forgot and had to call in ask because I schedule my annual when I leave the office.

Talk with your doctor, but mine always gives a Pap as soon as you have the first prenatal visit, even if you just had one a few months before.

I think I had one during all of my pregnancies. Sort of the "while I'm down there I might as well get a swab" thought process.

I'm sure you are fine, if you doc wants to do one, so be it. Other than that, they are probably pretty aware of whats going on down there right now :)
Paps have been changed to every 3 years if you are in a monogamous relationship anyway.

I usually had an annual due early in my pregnancies or close to it, so they always did one during my first prenatal. I don't actually have to have them more than once every three years, but have had them about every year just because I've been pregnant every other year and they also sometimes have done one at my follow-up appointment since it's close to a year anyway. If they have any reason NOT to do one, they'll let you know anyway.

I believe I had one early in my pregnancy, but I'd have to look it up to be sure. Talk to your OB.

I would wait! Why take ANY unnecessary risks......... They can due it at your 6 week postpartum check.

I had a pap during my preg. since mine have been consistently abnormal. They won't do any sort of further follow up on you until the baby is born....or at least I didn't have the cell removal procedure until my son was 12 weeks old. That was just my experience. V

If it was less than a year from your last pap until you got pregnant, they probably won't do one until your 6 week checkup after you give birth. I was overdue for my yearly pap when I got pregnant, so they did one at my first pregnancy checkup.

Hi R.~
It depends on how old you are and your personal history. I'm in my early 30's and have a clean history, so when I was pregnant with my son and my previous PAP was a year old, they skipped it. Baby is just 2 months old now...

I was due for pap during my last pregnancy. I had one early on but can't recall exactly where I was at weeks wise. They did warn me about spitting after but fortunately there wasn't any. It is certainly worth asking at your next visit.

I would ask your doctor/midwife. I had always had normal Paps until I was breastfeeding my son. Then I had an abnormal one; according to several people, I never should have had one while nursing because of a decreased estrogen level that throws things off (things were fine at the followup visit). Not sure if this happens during pregnancy too, but I agree with the others who say as long as you've had normal Paps for awhile, you can skip it.

My OB gives one at the six week checkup postpartuum, so your doc may just wait til then. Best course is to ask at your next visit when they want to do your next PAP.

I did have a pap smear when I was 1 month pregnant, but they did it because I showed an abnormal test a month before. Everything turned out great.
