Pediatric Dermatology?

my daughter is 8 and has black heads (big ones) on her nose. i have terrible skin and really don't want her to deal with that. I know this can be treated earlier than adolescence and i know if untreated she could scar. The pediatrician said it was way too early to even consider any treatment. i think there must be something topical that we could use.....

Has anyone even heard of a pediatric dermatologist?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I actually take my son to a pediatric dermatologist with Jefferson Hospital. Her name is Dr. Patricia Hyde and you can Google her for her contact info. It may take a little bit to get an appt but she is very caring and my son is very comfortable with her. Good luck!

Hi S.,
I know there IS such a thing as "pediatric dermatology." But when my son had a skin issue, I could not find O. either close by or without a huge waiting time--they are pretty scarce. I ended up taking my son to a regular dermatologist for his diagnosis. But I'm not sure even if P.D.'s treat for acne in children. Good luck to you!

I had a similar experience...when we needed a dermatologist, the pediatric ones were not local, and are scarce, and our issues were not serious enough to need that. The regular dermotologist were fine for my kids. Otherwise, I would have gone to one at Jefferson. No doubt Children's and St. Chris also have specialists. Good luck!

My son sees Judith Cenci at Yardley Dermatology. She's really good with kids (she has young children), and the wait for an appointment isn't as long as some other doctors' offices.

Hi S.,

If you can't find a pediatric dermatologist, a dermatologist is qualified to treat young children.

Hope this helps. D.

I would take her to a dermatologist. With a specific issue, no help from the pediatrician, go directly to the specialist. If your kin is bad, and she is approaching the age when her body is changing, I would go for the advice on the black heads and also a skin cleansing regime as she starts to get older. I don't know if they have pediatric dermatologists, but at her age I don't think she necessarily needs one. Before you make an appointment, call around and as=k if they treat 8yo.

Good Luck.

I saw a blackhead eraser treatment thing at walmart. (It was $20, kinda of pricey but amy work). Clean and clear has a whole blackhead line. The pediatrician probably doesn't want her on any heavy pills or major chemical creams. I would say that most over the counter creams etc wouldn't be harmful unless your daughters skin is sensitive to them. If thats the case then you would probably be able to tell. I would stay away from the heavy, extra drying stuff like benzyl peroxide.

S., before you take her to a dermatoligist, make sure she is cleaning her face at least twice a day-early morning and before bed. Also, try using witch hazel and a cosmetic pad. It is natural and cheap! Blackheads are usually caused by blocked pores and dirt. I think if you keep on her especially now when hormonal changes start, she will be fine.

We treat it ourselves with the proactive. I had bad skin as well, and so we all in the house use the proactive of course I put it on the kids but it really does work and I asked the pediatrician and they said it was fine.

this may sound really stupid, and i personally have never tried it so I am not sure if it works, but I saw on the Ellen Degeneres show that if you put a thick layer of Elmer's Glue over blackheads and let it dry completely, you can peel it off and it works like a Biore Strip and isn't as expensive.

Until you find the right dermatologist- Biore strips (Wal Mart, CVS, etc) are great. They pull the blackheads right out without pinching your skin like squeezing. If you haven't tried them-try them! Afterwords use a nice toner to tighten the pores. It's something to use a couple times a week, not a cure, but its great when the blackheads are gone. Also, drugstore.com is a good way to review products before you buy just by reading descriptions. Look for acne treatments. Bye Bye Blemish is good, but more for zits, not blackheads. Try Biore! Also, getting lots of circulation and sweating helps a lot. She could steam her face first to open pores and then use Biore. Keep her hydrated and active! Good luck!

Hi S.,
There is a group of Pediatric Dermatologists on Rt.19 in Wexford...they are affiliated with Children's Hospital. The group is called Children's Dermatology Services and the phone number is ###-###-####. I have used this office several times already for my toddler and I would recommend them. Good luck!
