My son is almost 4 and will go potty on his own #1 and #2 but is terrified to pee standing up. His fathers takes him with him and all his cousins do it so he has been shown how to do it and that nothing bad happens when you do it. He'll stand there but has stage fright it seem. I know itsn normal to have stage fright but what can I do to make him see it ok? I've done fruit loops but cannot get him to do it. What are some tricks you have done to get your child to do it.

What can I do next?

Don't worry about it. He'll do it when he's ready. I'd be willing to bet that if you let it go, it won't be long before he decides he wants to do it, too, just like Daddy and his cousins. Just give him time.

Do his future wife a favor and keep him peeing sitting down! I WISH my husband would sit and pee. Every week as I scrub urine splatters off the toilet I wish it with every fiber of my being. We have toilets, not urinals! Oy!

I honestly do not understand why men have to stand. I potty trained my son to sit. He has seen his daddy use a urinal but I've never "taught" him to stand. I figure when he's older, if that's how he wants to pee, he is free to do so but at home, he sits. I don't think this is an issue that should be an issue at all.

(edit)
BTW: All my children (girls and boy) have been taught to sit on public toilets with toilet paper...LOTS of toilet paper.

I knew a couple who taught their son to pee sitting down, but facing the back of the toilet. This might help to transition him. He won't be standing up yet, but he will be facing the right way when he eventually does stand up.

Relax about this and let it go for now. He's only 4 years old, S.. My son did the same thing. Well... my son was set in his ways by then and he wasn't about to change his ways... just yet. It didn't bother me. However... it bothered my husband when he was 5 and still not standing to go pee. Funny though.... my husband always sat on the toliet to go #1. My husband will always stand when we are in public places, though. So I told my husband tomodel the behavior by standing to pee when he is at home. That didn't help any. My hubby could not stand thinking about him sitting on the toliet seat while at school to go pee. Yes.... and lining the seat with t.p. is difficult to do when you're a young kid because by the time the tp is on, it either falls in the toliet or the kid can't hold in his urine anymore. lol

Well.... my son finally stood up and peed in the toliet when he was about to enter 2nd grade. He wanted a Lego toy so badly while we were in Tuesday Morning and he had to go pee. So it dawned on me that I might be able to get him to stand..... I said, "If you go pee standing up, I'll buy you the toy that you're begging me to get." (It was worth the $10 bribe because all he needed was to do it once to realize that it's a bit different to stand up BUT it can be done.) He told my husband when we got home and he thought my son and I were kidding. It was just the right timing. That's what did it! I didn't push. If I was to give him that choice earlier in his life, it probably wouldn't have worked, but I sensed he was ready to take on "the challenge."
So from that point, he started standing up to pee whenever he used a public bathroom. Then last year, I realized that my toliet area was getting a lot messier with pee than ever before. WELL I guess there's someone in the house who is standing up all the time at home now:-) My son still prefers privacy and will not use a urinal. He will wait to use a toliet that has it's own stall/door. (and that's totally fine with me.)

Take care and let this "slide" for now. Really it's not worth it.

I would give him some more time. They usually decide on their own that they want to at some point. But I also like the idea of having him do it backwards on the toilet at first.

We showed him how to sit backwards at first. Then after awhile, we tried the stand up method. Sometimes he sits and sometimes he stands. Don't push it, at least hes going in the potty. Maybe he wants it to be his idea.

Let him do it as he pleases. When he goes to school and sees other boys doing it standing something will click and tell him it's time. Also, if he has someone watching him (you say he gets "stage fright") I can see why he won't, do YOU like to be watched when you go?

Also, this is probably TMI, but when I started potty training my now 2.5 year old and was asking my sister about my nephew and when he stood to pee, my 86 year old father (we all live together in a multi-generational fashion) said "I pee sitting down, I always have!" He is dad to 11 children, so it obviously didn't hamper his manliness any ; )

Just let him sit. My husband always sits on the toilet. In public, a different story... but at home, he always sits and always closes the lid. Try to back off altogether and it will probably work itself out once he is ready :-) Good luck!

we got my son the Peter Potty... a kiddie urinal. It was a lifesaver and he was potty trained within days of getting it... after months of fighting us. It is pricey... but we felt it was totally worth it
