We would like to get our boys (4 and 6) portable DVD players for our 18 hour drive to upstate NY.I have looked at so many online, read reviews , but we still can't decide. We re looking for a "free standing" units, not the ones you attach in the car. TIA
PS yep it's 18 hours from the south side of NC to the town across the river from Canada(Black lake).....all for the sake of good fishing:)

What can I do next?

We have a Phillps player from Target. It's almost ALWAYS on sale and it runs around $50.00. I bought the extended warranty, portable dvd players tend to break and the warranty is super cheap.

I do know there's a shelf attachment that attaches between the headrests for the free standing models. My sister has one for her car. Works great and the kids don't have to hold the dvd player the entire time.

I don't know where so got it and she's a work right now, otherwise I'd call her.

We have the Coby 8" players as well as the Polaroid 9"...all three are great little players with great battery time/usage as well as great car adapter/chargers..

I didn't realize it was 18 hours from NC to NY - it takes us 8 hours to get from VA to Boston..maybe 9 depending upon the traffic...and that's WITH stopping for gas, etc. You taking Route 1 up and then over?

EDIT - HOLY SMOKES!!! I hope those are some good fish!! :)

We have the Sony DVP 9 inch portable DVD player and love it! We had a Coby before this and it burnt out and stopped playing dvds in only a couple of months. The Sony is great, good battery life, awesome picture, easy to use, and love the swiveling display part, you can set it up so many different ways. We've had it for over a year now and I have no complaints!

I have the Philips 7" Dual Screen Portable DVD Player from Target. I have had it for 2 1/2 years and love it! We've not had any problems and it is really nice for those long car trips!! Although it is for the car, it can also be used free standing.

Santa brought my daughter an RCA portable DVD player and we love it. It has a battery life of about 2 hours but we always use the car charger so it's no big deal. It's easy enough to maneuver- my daughter works it by herself (she just turned 6). It was $50 at Target.

Our solution was a little unconventional, but it works for us... we use an old laptop! It has a big screen, and you can plug in headphones to it. Works great for us! We recycled a relative's old laptop when she upgraded to a new computer but I would imagine you could get one free or close to free on Craigslist or Freecycle, and then get a car charger on it if it doesn't come with one.

We have the RCA and the Polaroid DVDs...the RCA has a swivel screen so you can attach it to the back of a seat or put it on a table or lap.
