Has anyone had a positive home pregnancy test but then have negative blood work? I had 3 positive home tests today and then my doctor did blood work but it came back negative. And they didn't offer any explainations as to why this is. When I asked they just said "I Don't Know". Anything you can tell me is appreciated. My period is late. But I have never had anything like this happen before! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I went through this last year, and I was pregnant. The lab considers any hcg level under 100 negative, some home pregnancy tests are sensitive enough to read levels as low as 12.5 (some unofficial reports are even lower). My dr ordered a quantitive level along with the labs + or - which gives them an actual level. A normal woman should have levels below 5. If they are above this you are probably preg.

Yes I have had that problem once or twice and my doctor couldn't give a reason why either. Not every test is perfect I guess. Good luck.

Hi~
Yep. Happened to me, too. The lab actually helped me decipher that one, not the doc! It depends on what type of test they do. I didn't know there were two kinds of tests. One is a yes/no test but the other is a quantitive test, that just measures the amount of HCG in your blood. Of course, that test is used to tell how far along you are, but that's the one my doc ordered. Anyway, the first test came back negative, but the second test came back with a higher HCG level, so even though it wasn't at the level that they would consider positive...I knew that the only reason the level would go up was a baby! Make sense?? Oh, yeah and Im assuming you are not taking any treatments that would give you a false positive. Just wait a few days and ask the doc for another blood draw. You may very well be pregnant...either way, you'll find out soon enough! :)

False negatives are really rare in home pregnancy tests, and since you took 3, I'd bet that they're giving you an accurate positive. I'd get a second blood test.

Hi R. - my dr. told me that when a home pregnancy test reads positive, its almost 99% right. So I can't believe that your dr. is just blowing it off like that! An explanation would have been nice! I'd wait and go back next week for more bloodwork. You may very well be pregnant. It might just be too soon for the bloodwork to be positive. Keep us posted with your results!! And good luck!

Hi R.,
I'd get a second blood test done at a different doctor's office! You deserve an explaination!

Best of luck! :)

I would believe the home tests - since 3 came out positive and maybe get a second opinion from a different doctor, at least a doctor who will explain more then I do not know. It has never happened personally to me, but I did have a close friend in the past.

You need both a Quantitative, and Qualitative blood test in early pregnancy. Or just wait until around 8wks...:-)

Hi R., Do you go to an OB/GYN or an MD? I would consider a different dr, only because they didn't take the time to explain it to you. Maybe yours is just too busy.
