Hi Moms,
My little guy had a cold about a week back, and just this week I've noticed him rubbing or tugging at his ear a few times. He doesn't do it consistently or even every day, but I'm still wondering if he could possibly have an ear infection? He hasn't been fussy at all, but he has been waking up crying in the middle of the night, and I know that ear infections hurt more when you're lying down than sitting upright. I hate to take him to the doctor and it turn out to be nothing, but I don't want the infection to continue if there is one. Are there any other signs I should check for? Any advice would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

My son never spiked a fever, or showed ANY sign except he wouldn't eat and cried when I would lay him down when he had raging ear infections. The doctor and I would be astounded. None of the "normal" signs ever applied.
It sounds like an ear infection to me.
Never apologize for taking your child to the doc. YOu are the mom. We are rarely wrong about our own children.
HUGS!

My daughter was just diagnosed with a double ear infection last week. She had the same cold and a low-grade fever that would come and go. We took her to the doctor just to be safe and they discovered a bad ear infection.Try cleaning them with alcohol a couple times and see if he stops messing with them. Otherwise, I'd say go to the doctor just to get him checked out. She is on an antibiotic that seems to be making her ears/cold better, but has not been easy on her tummy.

My 2 ½ year old just got her second set of tubes. For her 1st year of life she got ear infections a lot. I felt so bad, a few times, after waiting a week and then taking her to the doctor to find out she did have an ear infection. The most common sign from her, before she could talk, was that she woke up in the middle of the night. I would just take him in to make sure. Good luck and have a Happy New Year!

My son has never had an ear infection, but he has done the same things. Pulling the ears could also be a sign of teething. I picked my (then) 2 yr old son up from his MDO and they were SURE that he had an ear infection since he was rubbing his ears, woke up crying, etc. I took him immediately to the dr and, nope, he didn't have an ear infection but some molars coming in. If I were you, I would take him to the Dr just to get checked out but in the mean time give him some tylenol or motrin to ease the pain. It could be an ear infection or it could be teething. Only the Dr can tell you from looking in their ears.

My son has had a 5 ear infections in the last 5 months he is 10 months old and is gettting tubes put in next week. He never had a fever the only way I knew something was wrong is he would wake up crying in the middle the night. Go to Walgreens by the over the counter ear drops. If he wakes up use them on him. If he then goes back to sleep then he probably has an ear infection. Always better to have him checked just in case you don't want the ear infection to get to bad. Good luck!
