Potty in Carseat

Our two year old is doing great at going potty for the last 6 months or so BUT we can't get her to stop going in her carseat. We almost always take her potty before a trip but she still has accidents.

My questions....1) Does anyone have a suggestion on how to help her with this. 2.) Is there anything out there you can put on your carseat to absorb and protect the carseat so that we aren't constantly taking the carseat apart. (we have looked but haven't found anything)

Thanks for your help!

I say if the child consistently goes in the carseat on trips to put her in pull-ups as a precaution. When she has a proven record of being able to control herself, wean her off of the pull-ups.

It really doesn't have to be an all or nothing prospect with the toilet training. Accidents will happen. If there is consistency with an accident in the car, then there is probably something about the motion or something else that she is not yet able to control.

I second the piddle pads- we have 2, when there is an accident I switch to the other one and take that one in to throw in the washer. It isn't foolproof, but it works pretty well.

Oh I have been there. Yes Wal-mart sells a little carseat cover, it only goes where there bottom sits so it is made just for this problem! I think it costs about $10. In our walmart it is on the same isle as the formula - where all the misc items are to purchase for your kid for travel. Like the monkey backpacks and what not. Good luck! We used to put a pull up on our son for a longer car trip (as in longer than 15 min). Hope that helps.

I used the lap pads from Babies R Us when we were potty-training our kids. They are not made for a carseat, but they are small enough that when folded in half they fit between the back and the front buckle perfect. They are absorbant on one side and waterproof on the other.

had almost the same problem when my son was a baby. He would always go in his swing. Got the Piddle Pad from Babies R US. It works.

You need to keep her in a diaper or pull-ups when you're not going to be home. If she doesn't like this, maybe it will encourage her not to go in the car seat. I'm thinking maybe you guys are more 'potty trained' than she is or it could possibly be a jealousy ....

You can use small (washcloth-sized) lap pads. Get the non-quilted kind. They are fairly cheap, like $10 for six lap pads. They are washable. AT that price you could cut them into whatever size you need. Good Luck!

She's going to have accidents all the way through age 6!

Two is very young to be completely potty-trained...kudos! But she will most likely have bouts where she regresses and just starts peeing in her pants again. My son started using the potty around 3ish, and did really well, but had bouts where he just couldn't deal with it all the way through age 5.

Don't know why the car is a trigger for her. I would recommend pull-ups for trips.

We took our 2 year old potty before leaving and stopped often. They can only hold their bladder so long; especially when they are first starting. You could use those pet pads on the carseat that they use for potty training for pets. Also, they have lap pads for infants that you could purchase at babies r us. good luck!

We used the puppy pads that you can use to help potty train a dog; they were cheap and easy. I did see the insert that you can put in the carseat at Babies R Us a couple of weeks ago. It's in the aisle with the other carseat accessories.

Make it easier on all of you- you have your hands full & she's learning that she's not the only center of your world! She has to share her spotlight- I'm sure it's been a big adjustment for all of you. I say Pull-ups in the car for now. Piddle pads are great, but maybe when she gets better at controling her bladder in a moving car. Why change her clothes every time you stop the car? She's doing great- make it easier on yourselves! Good luck & good job!

Why not just put her in a pullup when she rides in the car until she's a little older and has more control.

I would place a disposable changing pad under her and then maybe a towel on top of that to keep puddles from forming if she pees. I would think that this would work and be pretty inexpensive. No suggestions on how to stop this, sorry! good luck

Hello M., As I was reading your post, my mind was thinking ,something lately has upset her normal behavior.
I am just guessing, however, you said this has been going on about 6 mo. or so. Then you said you have a 7 mo. old new baby. She may be a little jealous of the new baby getting most of the attention. They are both in car seats and you change his diaper, now she has accidents, Perhaps try telling her how proud of her you are that she does not need baby diapers anymore, and she is such a big gitl to help you. Just an idea. I'm sure you told her ahead of delivery, about the new baby, and she loves him, however ,it could be her small way of getting attention. Ask if she would rather ride in car with a diaper , for trips, just for a while, only in the car seat, as you don't have time to keep it washed daily. Hope it works,
B.

You may look into puppy training pads at the pet store, or Walmart. They can be cut to fit, and may be cheaper than anything you can get at babies r us.

The reason she is going in the car is obvious to me, the vibration of the car is making her go. It is almost involutary for her to go when she is riding in the car. She will gain control over that sometime during the next 6 months, but you can't do anything to help her change it sooner, because it is purely physiological. Don't ignore it, however when you see that she has done it just say, "oh no, you had an accident, always tell us when you need to potty so that we can stop and let you go" and move on. She probably doesn't even realize that she is going because the vibrations of the car hide the feeling of urinating. I would definitely try the pidle pad from kidopotamus that you can buy at babies r us. It is meant for carseats. It is great because the top is fabric to absorb the unrine, but the back is plastic to keep the urine from soaking through to the carseat. They have black ones, so you can bring it inside and wash it everynight if it happens every day. Good luck, don't push her, she really can't control it in the car!

Yes, I discovered piddle pads at babies r us in the carseat area. They fit in the bottom and absorb really well. Our son too has done well with potty training, but if he falls asleep in the car we still have accidents. They have worked great so far. There are two different kinds both made by kidopottamous I think. I use them with my newbornnow who likes to poop everywhere. I think men must be the carseat designers and have never had to deal with all the spills and accidents that happen in carseats! Hope this helps!
