Potty Training - Davenport, IA

My daughter is 2 1/2 and I'm having the hardest time potty training her! I've tried a potty chair, she did not like it at ALL. So I got a Dora potty seat to put on our toilet and she likes going on that and reading her books. Problem is, she doesn't respond to being wet. She will tell me when she has taken a number two, but she won't with just a wet diaper. I've tried pullups where they make the child feel "cool" when they urinate, but that didn't work. I just started using cotton training pants thinking she would certainly feel uncomfortable with that wet feeling if she peed her pants. She doesn't feel uncomfortable at all! I have been sitting her on the toilet every half hour and she doesn't go, then in between the half hour of each sitting, she wets herself and doesn't tell me. She doesn't act uncomfortable or anything, I have no idea she wet herself until I put her on the potty again or check her. I'm really frustrated and I'm wondering if she is ready, how do I know she is ready and am I doing something wrong? She's my first child so this is all new to me.

What can I do next?

Hey T.!
I know what you are going through! Potty training can be so frustrating! It really sounds to me like you are on the right track! The trick is to get her to go in the potty just once!! I know that sometimes sounds impossible! It also sounds like maybe her body just isn't quite ready... I have heard that if they are unable to hold the urine in for a few hours it makes it really difficult. Don't give up though! I have a two and a half year old boy and a almost 5 year old girl! Oh and one on the way in Feb. Both of my children have been totally different as far as potty training. Amanda practically trained herself... Grant has been more of a challenge, but I refuse to give up knowing I will be buying even more diapers in Feb. I am usually not big on rewards, but I started giving Grant just one m&m if he even sat on the potty! After he finally started going he was so excited he forgot all about the m&m's! Good luck!

those pull ups never worked for us either. i have learned they are a waste of money. you are right, maybe she isn't ready. i think when we see some signs we want them to be ready right now..lol
she is still young and it's ok if she doesn't fully get it till after 3years old or later. it's nothing to be concerned about until she hits 5, then you should see a dr to make sure it's nothing medical. night time training can come much later even and sometimes 5-6 for night time is not considered an issue. night time potty trained means 30 mornings straight waking up dry. i used the night time overnights since they hold more and look more like underwear(once my son was day potty trained)
i got frustrated as well with my son at about that same age. then our pediatrician said it was ok to just take a step back and just wait. it's better for everyone if you don't try to push. we still talked to our son about the fun and happy part of wearing underwear. but didn't belittle him or put him down.
at 3 yrs and 5 months he told us he wanted to wear his underwear. not thinking that actual day woudl be the day, we just thought,, ok this is a good beginning spot.. but he wore his underwear for the weekend with a few accidents both days. but come monday he didn't have any accidents at all and since. he will be 4 in january. my daughter will be 3 in november so i'm kind of in the same place you are. waiting,, talking to her about the potty and asking if she wants to go sit on it etc. and talk to her too about getting to wear her tinker bell underwear.. she says she wants to wear the underwear but not go in the potty.. so i still wait..lol which is fine. i would really really love to be totally out of diapers but i know it would create more stress on both of us trying to force the issue. when i do try to press the issues he just screams and fights not wanting on the potty.
a really good book i read with my son was The Potty Training Answer Book. and we also took this potty training class thru a hospital here that was given by a child psychologist.
there were some good tips we got from there if you'd like the long drawn out version let me know..lol i'll email it to you.
good luck.. relax:-)

It was 20 days after my daughters 3rd b-day (May) and i took away diapers...made her wear panties. IT was 2 weeks of me cleaning carpets and her wearing wet panties...then it clicked. She does AWESOME now!! She does wera pullups when we leave the house, buts she does good not wetting them and using a public potty. She also wears pullups at night. Hope this helps.

Hello - T.!

I'm have two boys, and yes they are different then girls but, I have found that for 99% of moms potty training is the worst! my advise to you is that she is not ready. If she is telling you about number two when she has a diaper on then imbrace that give her lots of good praise and then just change the wet diapers until she is ready. She will be when she comes to you and says she wants to do it. When she is wanting to go on the potty more, get her involved let her pick out the patties (then she may care about keeping them clean) Do a reward program like a sickers on a chart every time she goes on the potty and has dry panties, then after a day or week she can get a treat. Either a peice of candy or a little toy from the 1$ store. You can figure out what will work. But the key is she has to be on bord, she was to want to do it or you will be just waisting your energy. Most kids are not ready until about 3yrs (and I know you did not want to hear that) I didn't either when I heard that. My only other advise is keep it as possitive as you can. Lots of praise and happy thoughts. Disiplineing for accidents or time outs for accidents usually only increases them. It puts to much pressure on them. (I'm not sure if you are doing this or not but I thought i would let you know anyway)
Good luck I hope this helps- JoAnn

My girl trained really early basically did it herself, but my boy is diff. story. With him we actually started putting reg type underwear on him while we were at home with him, then if he had a accident he was in a hurry to change them. When he was in pullups, and we tried every kind of pull up, and he was wetting and never telling us. ABout 2 weeks after wearing the regular ones and getting them wet he was done. When we went out someplace I did use the pull-ups but I tried staying home as much as possible and it worked! Good luck to you.
