Potty Training Issues - Lexington,KY

My son, who will be 3 on Dec. 19, is FINALLY going to the potty on his own. The only thing is, he has to be "commando" (naked from the waist down) to do it. He doesn't like wearing underwear, even though I've bought him some really cute ones (Thomas the Train, Cars, etc.) And when he wears a pull-up, it feels too much like a diaper to him so he doesn't realize that he needs to pull it down to go potty.

My hope was to have him totally trained by his birthday, but that dream is quickly drifting away. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?! Thanks much!

What can I do next?

ok, so I am not the only one who has a nuddie, as we call it. My daughter will be 3 in January and when she goes on her own, she come out with nothing. We just help her put her underwear and bottoms back on a reminder her that that behavior is not appropriate.

I also am a mother to a now 7yr old who's "potty light" did not finally go off until he was close to 3 1/2. I went crying to the pediatrician, who also has boys...she told me about her youngest that was almost 4!!

It will happen, just be as consistant as possible and praise him when he does things they way you want/expect.

My son is 4 and a half and when he goes to the bathroom he strips completely naked. I told him he didn't have to take all of his clothes off to go potty but he said he didn't want to get pee or poop on his clothes. He gets dressed when he is done, so I just let it go.

Hi J.,
I would suggest that pull-ups be off limits during the day, and that we wear them only at night. We did this for a few months and then eventually he decided he was big enough to not wear them at all, which was music to my ears!! Also, when we were first potty training, my son would pull off ALL his clothes to potty at home- lol. I used to let him go commando at first, as it was easier for him to pull his pants down and go. But, my son loves Spongebob, and there were a few episodes where Spongebob was running around in his tighty-whitey underwear. When I explained that even Spongebob wore underwear, he started wearing them with no fussing! If you can find something like that, maybe that will get him on board with the underwear. It definitely sounds like you are heading in the right direction, though! Best of luck to you!

Let him go like this for now, and then gradually ease him into underwear. I let both my kids go naked from the waist down, so that they wouldn't feel like they were in diapers or just pee in their clothes, and I didn't want them to have to wrestle with pants and underwear if "time were of the essence," as it were. He'll get it! Eventually. :-)

how wonderful that he's going to the bathroom on the potty. Don't sweat the" commando" phase - he'll wear them eventually.

My 7 year old son had the same issue. I let him go commando when we were at home and I eased him into wearing pants when we were out, I started with loose fitting sweat pants w/ no underwear. He eventually got the hang of it, I think it had to do with his independent nature... he didn't want any help in the bathroom and he hadn't quite mastered pulling everything down yet. Good Luck and congrats on your success... my son didn't show any interest until after his 3rd birthday. I was positive he would be wearing diapers to kindergarten!

It is really common for kids to need to go Commando for a while. My son went without underwear for almost a full year. The sensation of wearing underwear makes them feel like they have diapers on. Our preschool teacher, at the time, suggested leaving underwear off while potty training. We did, and it worked beautifully. He started wearing underwear when he was 4. Just let him go "commando".

I'll add to the apparent concensus on this. It was much easier for my boys to go "commando" so I let them. One of mine potty-trained at 1 1/2 by doing this. And I would recommend staying away from Pull-Ups. I used these on my two youngest and they didn't potty-train until they were well past three.

I had begun to think my son was going to start school in
diapers - he would hold everything until he could slip behind a door, or saw that I was engrossed for the moment -
and he would let go.

One day I took him to Sunday School. When we got home he could not wait to get into the bathroom, take off his clothes and sit on the toilet!!! He had seen the other little boys in action in the bathroom at S.S.!

He was close to 3 years old. And "house broken" from that
hour on.

My son will be 3 on Dec. 20th! I got lucky with potty training, he's been potty trained for the last 8 mos or so. He does the commando thing, too. I suggest staying away from pull-ups, and the more moms I talk to, I'm sorry that they were ever created, except for bedtime, which I call his "night time unders"! It's funny because my whole life, anytime my stomach is feeling particuarly nasty, I still kinda do the same thing to this day, too, all that clothing makes me feel nervous, so maybe he learned it from me, but I really wouldn't sweat it, my son will wear underwear and as soon as he has to go poop or pee, he chucks them off in the corner. Think of it this way, like me and our kids, we're all pretty much always alone when we are in the bathroom pooping, so even if he would get completely naked every time he poops for the rest of his life, as long as he gets dressed before he comes out, who will ever even know? Be glad he's going on the potty and let his "boys" breathe!
