I would like to start potty training my son. Im not sure if its to early to start but He tells me when he poops in his diaper. Right now he is 21 months old. He knows how to flush the toliet. When I go to sit him on the potty he screams and crys. Do you ladies think I should wait a few more months than try again? When I go to the bathroom and he goes in there with me and gets some toliet paper and acts like hes wiping him self. I do have a potty chair. I have had it for a whyle no. I have it in his room that he runs too when he goes poop. But I am thinking about putting it in the bathroom.

What can I do next?

my son is almost 2 1/2 now and we are just getting it. It was around a year ago we started letting him play around with going on a potty chair. We put aside a few water toys in a shallow pan and let him play with them in warm water when he sat on the chair. He loved to sit there and the warm water would make him pee. He would get excited about the pee in the potty but it is only recently he started to control everything and we had to offer more motivation for doing so with a sticker chart but he had no fear fo the potty and was already used to sitting on it when the time came.

maybe insted of trying the potty, you could just start talking more about it - reading books etc. My son and I made up a potty dance and he loves it! he is two in a few days. He also REALLY likes the Elmo's Potty time video we got at Barnes and Nobel- Hope this helps!

J., I don't think it's ever too early to start. Jayden sounds like he's pretty intelligent and has the basics of going potty. The only issue you have is the potty itself. Asess that part. Are you using the big potty? Are you using a potty chair? Where is it? Try the seats that fit on your toilet. Get a stool and sit in front of him with his favorite book. Read with him and talk with him about the pictures. Draw pictures with him. You may have to do this for a couple times before he likes it. This is what I did and it worked. He now takes a book in everytime. Goodluck!

I trained my daughter and a little girl I babysat at the same time. We would make it a "group effort." I would announce that I needed to go potty, mainly to let them know I was leaving the room & would be right back. But for some reason they wanted to come with me. They liked to flush too so I said only those who put their pee pee in the potty get to flush. Worked pretty good! I'm babysitting another little one now and she likes to play with the TP. I'll try the same thing on her - only those who use the potty get to use TP.

If he's ready, go for it. If not, save yourself the frustration. He won't go to kindergarten in diapers!

Yes, wait. I would start trying and keeping a potty around, encouraging its use, but if you need to do anything more than give positive incentive, its too soon. Boys often are not going consistently on the potty until around 3 years.

Yes, definitely wait. If you push it, you will only be adding aggravation to yourself. When he is ready, he will be willing to sit on the potty.

He is letting you know that he is not ready by screaming and crying. Praise him when he tells you he has gone, and encourage him to tell you before he goes. Hang in there, he will eventually be ready. It takes boys a little longer sometimes not even until 3 and 1/2 or 4 years of age. Good luck.

Hi J.,
I agree with the previous poster who said WAIT! I think you can definitely get a little potty and leave it in the living room or wherever, but I wouldn't push it especially since you little guy is screaming and crying about it. Too much pressure will backfire - take it from one who knows! We went on a three month potty strike at our house because I think I was putting too much pressure on my son. It became a control issue. Much luck to you!

Hi J.! Do you have a kid potty seat for your toilet? They are around $10 at WalMart and you just put them on the toilet seat. It is sized for "little bums" and may help his fear. I would let him pick out his own, (they come in different patterens) and let him put it on the seat, and flush the toilet in a relaxed manner. Don't sit him on it until he's ready...start with his pants on. Also I recommend the small flushable wipes for poop...it makes the transition easier too. Just take your time, keep it relaxed & calm. As my Dr. told me, there is no set age for potty trainning. As long as he is out of diapers before he starts kindergarden your good! Not one of my girls trained before they were three, but once they decided to do it, well it was painless and really easy with next to no accidents! Good luck & best wishes!

I would wait. You don't want him to associate the potty with something negative. 21 months is so young, same age as my son, and I am not even thinking about it until he shows some interest.

My daughter is 27 months and just became potty trained. Now that I'm on the flip side of the equation, I can offer a little advice, which is: let him lead. Go with what he wants or doesn't want, don't force it, talk about it a lot and you will find his interest probably wax and wane a bit. My daughter was interested around 21 months, then kind of forgot about it, then about a month ago (incidentally my son was born the month prior) she was all about it - telling me constantly when she was peeing and pooping. I asked her if she wanted to go on the potty, which then became a regular thing. She was wearing her "big girl panties" over her diaper for a while and then one day after nap I asked her if she wanted a new diaper or just her panties and she opted for panties! There's been no looking back!

Hope this helps - good luck!

I would wait until he's at least 2 1/2 to try. It's a good step when they can tell you AFTER they've done something. They're aware and it uncomfortable. You need to see that they have less wet diapers and actually wanting to take this step. Don't push. Get a potty chair and let them play with it, let him watch you, talk about it all. It can take time for them to just understand what's going on.

buy a dvd on potty training and let him watch it. buy a potty too for the potty training and let him watch it. he may like it. he sounds like a smart little boy. do not press the issue because he may regress.

21 months is VERY YOUNG for a boy to potty train. Give him positive feedback for anything he does in that direction, but give him time and relax! Carrying a diaper back is easier than frantically finding bathrooms or cleaning up accidents! I would put the potty in the bathroom so that he connects his bodily functions with that room rather than his bedroom.
