C.,

Have you heard of Northside Parents Network (NPN). I joined this primarily to find a nanny that come recommended from other family (rather than having a nanny call me looking for a job through something like Craigslist.com). But now I use NPN for so many other things. The discussion board has given me support so many times when I have been struggling with how to do naptimes, if my son might have reflux, etc. etc.

Anyway, we just hired a nanny that I think will be amazing and it was from a mom that responded to my post on the discussion board when I posted I needed a PT nanny T and Th. She was helping her new nanny fill her other available days.

So you might want to look into it. $50 for a year membership, but I am also starting with a play group from it, so I find it well worth more than $50!!

Good luck on your search.

C.,
I am a stay-at-home mom of a beautiful 5 month old baby girl. I watch my nephew 4 days a week, just in the morning so that my sister can go to school. I am looking for some work that I can do from home and would love the opportunity to meet with you. I live just south of the city in a suburb called Willow Springs. It is easily accessible from I55 and 294 and about 15 miles from the loop. I would be willing to negotiate a slightly lower price than you have listed here if you are interested. Please contact me if you would like to meet.
Sincerely,
K. H. ###-###-####

Hi C.-

I am a mom myself and nanny for a 6 month old boy. I get to bring my daughter with me to work which is wonderful (I gave up a corporate job to be at home with my daughter after she was born in April). I watch him 3 days/week for 7 hours/day. The nanny agency I went through told me the range for a typical nanny P/T nanny with experience is $14-17/hour. I receive $14/hour as I bring my daughter with me and this reduces my hourly wage. So my daily salary is $100 for the 7 hours.

Since you have twins, I would expect to pay the $100 but do think you can find childcare for that. I would leave yourself some time to find the right person though. It may take a bit of time to find someone good who is willing to accept this salary. I would also not except much else to be done during the day unless your little ones are great nappers. For my wage, I am not expected to do any household duties, just care for the son. It's also really hard with two babies so am glad of this (as I'm sure you know).

Good luck! I know of someone who had success finding a nanny through Craig's List.

I wish you luck, but I can't imagine you will find anyone very well qualified to care for twin infants for $8/hour, unless maybe you find a relative or someone with their own child to care for along with yours. Not in the city.

I have two children and over the years have visited about 25 home daycares, a half-dozen centers, and interviewed about a dozen nannies. I'd be wary of anyone who would work for that little money, unless they have a good reason that makes sense to you (if you offer fringe benefits or allow them to bring their own kid, etc.) Also, let's be real, you're in Lincoln Park - if they are any good at all, one of your neighbors will double their salary and steal them from you. Do you want a longterm relationship with a qualified and loving person, or a series of people who are temporarily hard up for money and will leave you after 3 months?

My son's warm, loving licensed and inspected home daycare charges $40/day per child. Maybe that's an option you could look into.

EDIT - I just realized that you edited your original note. I think a nanny share, maybe with an older child, would be a great solution!

I was lucky enough to find a Nanny for $10/hour, but once I had a second baby I increased this to $12/hour. Unfortunately, most individuals that I interviewed were looking for $12-15/hour to watch one child. I will ask my Nanny and those in the neighborhood and let you know. Good luck.
