Just curious if anyone out there has Asthma and what they did before they started getting pregnant. I am currently taking an allergy pill and Symbicort inhaler to control my Chronic Asthma which is triggered easily. These two medicines combined I do well and it keeps the Asthma under control. While trying to get pregnant and during pregnancy what is the best way to stay Asthma controlled and not worry about the baby?

What can I do next?

I did - I was on multiple inhalers. With accupuncture I reduced my dosages and got off all but one before I had my baby. Only use them now for rare occasssions (cold that goes into my chest or heavy exercise or serious allergy reaction) Kim Choong ###-###-#### - I am sure everyone reacts differently - but it worked for me. Hope that helps - M.

acupuncture! I have a ton of food allergies & environmental allergies and acupuncture was so awesome and it helped me feel great energy & emotionally too, aches and pains etc. If you find a acupuncturist with your insurance it doesn't cost much. You can find a lot of good feedback online about asthma and acupuncture.

I have asthma & became pregnant w/twins 3 1/2 years ago. Before becoming pregnant, I was taking Advair (inhaler) & Singulair (pill), but when I became pregnant, my doctor switched me from Advair to Pulmicort b/c at the time Advair was not 100% proven to not be harmful to pregnant women. I was fine until I started getting really big, which on my 5' frame & being pregnant w/twins was already an ordeal for my body on top of having asthma. I would sometimes get bouts of breathlessness so I would try to not overexert myself, always carry my rescue inhaler, arching my back to try to expand my lungs helped & when I slept, I slept more elavated than recommeded for pregnant women to reduce pressure on my lungs/chest. Overall, having asthma while pregnant wasn't too bad, just don't forgt to take your meds b/c when you are pregnant the term "pregnancy brain" is true, so if you forget, take it as soon as you remember, keep your rescue inhaler close & relax until you feel the wheeziness or breathlessness go away. BTW, I'm still on Pulmicort b/c my dr. figured, why switch if it's working & I'm also on Spiriva, another inhaler that's supposed to work w/your current asthma medication, but I'm no longer taking Singulair (pill). Hope this has helped & good luck to you!

You'd have to talk to your doctor and/or an herbalist/homeopath because I know you have to be very careful about meds during pregnancy. I have asthma (though as severe as yours) and allergies, and I wasn't even allowed to take Claritin! Talk about a rough allergy season! You might also want to see if you can find some information on an asthma site like http://www.emedicinehealth.com/asthma_in_pregnancy/articl... or http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/131812.php or http://www.healthline.com/sw/hr-ad-ask-the-doctor-asthma-.... I'm sure there are many other websites, but those were a few of the ones I found in just a quick search. Good luck, and I hope you find something to help keep it in check!

Hi D.,

I am asthmatic and take Singular daily and have an albuterol inhaler which I take daily as needed. During both of my pregnancies, I continued to take both with not problems. In fact, I found that I used my inhaler less when I was pregnant(which i think was unusual, but I was happy about it). As my doctor put it when I asked the same question, "your baby needs to breath, if you can't breath well without using your inhaler, neither can the baby. So use your inhaler when you need it" Both of my children were fine, healthy weight, on time, etc. I don't have the severe allergies you have but my asthma is the same. I believe you will be fine. I would not recommend stopping your medicines. They are vital for you.

You might check out mangosteen juice. we've used it with good success with our daughter's asthma. it's a natural antihistamine/anti-inflamatory. We still have tne inhaler, but she uses it rarely and doesn't need the massive doses of steroids we needed before. You can order it on-line. It's preicey but you only need a small amount to help. best to you!

Take the medications that you need in consultation with your OB. I got off all meds before getting pregnant and was mostly okay (I don't have asthma but do have a hiatal hernia and acid reflux that can cause breathing problems.) As soon as I got pregnant, those problems just skyrocketed and I had wished I had not gotten of the medication. I just had to go right back on it anyway. I had very idealistic thinking about not taking a single pill for the pregnancy. Whatever medical problems you have, they have the potential for being much worse in pregnancy. Consult with your doctors to decide which medicines are the best. But I recommend being stabilized on the medicines before getting pregnant. I'm having to play catch up with my Aciphex and that has caused me to suffer a lot in this first part of my pregnancy.
