Random Question: How Often Do You Bake?

By bake I mean make a confectionery or pastry. I made a spice cake this weekend. I don't bake very often (maybe once every 2 months) because my husband isn't a big sweets eater and because something bad usually happens when I do bake something. My husband put the spice cake into the oven for storage. Later, I turned on the oven and melted all the icing off the cake before realizing it was in there. The time before that, my husband forgot to grease the Bundt cake pan and the cake got stuck. My sister says most people only bake around the holidays (she seriously never bakes...ever) and that made me curious so I thought I would ask. Thanks for answering!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the answers! Since asking this question I attempted to bake banana muffins for my husband's coworkers. My bananas were too ripe. I made apple muffins instead and they were yummy. My next venture is going to be pumpkin pie (something I can't mess up).

I bake often. I'm kinda obsessed with it actually. I started making christmas cookies about 3 years ago, and had so much fun that day, and after 8 hours of work, I was in awe of the things I had created. I then became cupcake obsessed. I now do parties, showers, Etc. I tend to use my own ideas, and rarely go by a recipe, and I find its so much better when you start adding things that aren't meant to be there. Later this week, I'm having a gathering, and I'm making a pumpkin cupcake with a vanilla cream cheese filling, and whipped cream cheese icing, but I doubt I'll look at any recipe.

One thing I love to do is use something basic like a can of pilsbury cinnamon rolls, and just add to it and do my own version of a pastery. I put diced apples, butter and brown sugar in a 12 count muffin pan, then place each cinnamon roll upside down on top of it, once it's baked, you just flip it over onto a towel or large plate, and you have the best apple cinnamon desert straight out of a bakery that would have cost $10 a dozen, but I do it with the $1.99 can of rolls.

You asked how often I bake, and I got a little carried away. LOL. I am truly obsessed. Check out the pics of my latest creations. -Mostly cupcakes.

I used to bake 1 or 2 times per month, because I have a sweet tooth and hubby likes 'em, too. I don't as much any more because of time and because a toddler + hot oven = asking for trouble.

I did just bake a batch of lemon bars for DH (he loves lemon/citrus), and for me, a batch of chocolate chip cookie bars.

What I do occasionally, which has been actually better for us, is to take a batch of cake (we like the Triple Chocolate Bomb cake) and make it in muffin tins and freeze it. Then, we eat less (because it's not sitting on the counter) and there are 12-24 servings waiting in the freezer that are nice to pop out & warm up in the microwave for 20-30 seconds & serve w/ ice cream--it's great for a nice after-the-baby's-in-bed share-a-dessert-with-hubbie thing, or a quick dessert for guests.

I'm looking forward to doing something with apples--I bought several kinds on sale. I'll probably do some apple crumble, and then cut up and freeze some apple pie filling for later.

I love baking. Things don't always turn out perfect, of course, but usually at least part of it is edible. My mom was a baker and she made homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, all our birthday cakes, apple pie, pumpkin pie, etc. It makes me feel connected to her.

I did have to learn to do it mostly myself, and the baking times still sometimes throw me.... or I get distracted & leave it in too long (like last nights enchiladas).

I bake regularly.....as do my sons (age 14 & 23). It is a comfort thing for us! We do both sugar-free (my husband is a diabetic) & traditional baking. My sis & her kids also bake. At our reunion this past wkend, my niece had prepared 3 different desserts.....after working at school all day!!! Proud of her!

BUT I was raised with baking a huge part of my childhood. On Black Friday, we didn't shop...we baked with my grandmother. By the end of the weekend, we'd have over 1000 cookies ready to be distributed between friends, family, & neighbors! How's that for a family legacy? !!

I love to bake and do so often! I usually take it to work to share after we've had some at home. I was in a baking frenzy this weekend. Two loaves of bread, yellow layer cake with chocolate frosting for my son's birthday, and chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting just because I was already baking and had been wanting to try the recipe! They were delicious by the way. And don't be discouraged by your "mistakes" - baking is a lost art, and practice makes perfect!

I bake maybe once or twice a month whenever I have a sweet tooth. I bake more during the winter, as the oven heats up the house and in Texas summers, you don't want to heat up the house!

When I bake once a month, I often make Blonde Brownies. PM me if you want the recipe. Easy and tasty. I also made some yummy beer bread recently. VERY easy. Didn't have to wait for any yeast to rise or anything. I make banana bread and boxes of brownies. SOMEtimes cookies, but not as often as brownies.

Baking is the only thing I think I do well. I am always nervous about over-cooking or under-cooking meat. I always seem to mess up when I try to recreate mymom's yummy rice dish recipes.

In the summer I bake about once a month. It's just too hot and I don't like to heat up the house. Lots of fruit salad and pasta salad is consumed at our house in the summer.

In the winter we bake ALL the time. Twice a week would be my estimate. We make lots of bread, biscuits, croisants, muffins... We make a lot of sweets too, but those get given away because we don't eat many sweets. My girls (2 and 4) and I just really LOVE to bake.

We have goof ups too, but they usually taste just as good! Keep baking it's great to have your kids help. They learn so much.

Wow! Lots of bakers on this website. I bake for birthdays, by request (funerals, hockey tryouts, conference days at school, etc.), for book club, for parties, for gifts/bake sales and the occassional we just feel like making chocolate chip cookies, muffins, etc. I like to make apple crisp every year when the local apples are ready, and I usually save some of the local apples to make a pie for Thanksgiving. Ironically, I don't bake much at Christmas except for a special cookie recipe we inherited from my husband's grandma and that he requests. My mom and grandma do most of the holiday baking, but as they become less able to do it, I assume I will take over some of the responsibilities.

I love to bake but only really do so around the holidays or a birthday. Typically once or twice a month I make muffins because I just make them from a package and my son loves to help. I don't make a lot because if we have it in the house, we all eat it and we both have done a lot to keep weight off.

You said something bad usually happens when you bake but, just based on the two examples you give, I'd say your husband causes bad things to happen when you bake. Most people know you shouldn't store anything in the oven except maybe pans.

That said, I bake every couple of weeks in the cooler weather, every 3 or 4 days in December and none to once a month in the summer.

I bake my famous chocolate chip cookies about once a month. (They taste reallllly good but I use the Nestle Tollhouse recipe, so it's kind of a mystery. My MIL says when she makes them they never taste as good as mine. My husband's secretary would probably pay for my cookies if I wanted to sell them.)

I bake a cake 3 times a year for my husband's and sons' birthdays. (I refuse to bake my own cake, so for my bday they get me a fancy one from a bakery.)

I bake muffins every once in a while. Sometimes at Christmas I make a lot of cookies, and some years I just skip it.

I bake about two to three times a week, and find the creative process of baking very therapeutic! I like knowing what goes in our baked goods, so I always keep whole wheat pastry flour on hand, and try to use brown rice syrup or mollasses as sweeteners when I can. My husband enjoys scones and muffins for breakfast, and I like to keep brownies or other homemade goodies in the freezer. Now that I've become a mom, I enjoy baking even more...it relaxes me and gives me a finished product that I can be proud of...which is a lot to applaud myself for when the rest of the house is being torn apart by my toddler! :)

Usually once a week. My boyfriend isn't huge on sweets either. I usually like to bake a lot of muffins. They freeze well, last awhile in the fridge, and are easy to pack for his lunch. Same with cookies, breads, home made biscuits, etc. I also send lots of extras with him for him to share with his co-workers.
A lot of his co-wrokers don't have wives/girlfriends. If they do, the girls don't bake/cook. So I like to give them a treat.
I have baked muffins the last couple of weeks, so I think I am going to make some Halloween sugar cookies, and cupcakes. Then after that apple turnovers for fall....mmmmmmm. Home made cinnamon rolls are good too.

Ahhhh. I remember the countless times my attempts at baking some new culinary delight failed but with practice comes perfection. When the children were little we baked a cake or cookies every week. Once they got old enough and responsible enough to bake unsurpervised they took over the baking. I try to make certain we have all of the tools of the trade and ingredients for some tasty delight at any given time. It is a huge hit for guest to see me slip into the kitchen and about an hour later we are eating some freshly baked tasty morsel from the kitchen. (HINT: I usually keep dry ingredients in a zip lock bag at any given time labeled for what it could make like sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, lemon cake, banana bread.) Makes it even faster to pull together when just having to add oil/butter, eggs, flavored extract, etc and mix.

In the summer it is just too hot to bake some most of my current day baking is done during the fall and winter months with it thinning out in the spring and almost nonexistent in the summer except for an occassional chocolate chip cookie. I really can't resist fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Might bake some tonight.

I bake about once or twice a month, depending on when I get an urge to bake and also if I'm going to a birthday party or somewhere I can bring baked goods, otherwise it would stay in my house and I would eat it all. In the past 3 weeks I've made banana bread and a cheesecake. My husband isn't into sweets either so that is what keeps me from baking all the time. Baking is so different from cooking that some people only like one or the other. It is trickier and easier to screw up a baked good than a regular meal.

Maybe once a year, if we are lucky! haha. My husband enjoys cooking and baking. In the winter it is something that he and the kids do together, whether it just be cookies or a cake. I think he enjoys the time with the kids, haha.

Me, on the other hand, do not enjoy it at all. I just see it as one big mess that mom has to clean up. haha. Now, I don't mind cleaning up after my husband and kids have fun b/c they enjoyed themselves and I enjoy watching them enjoy themselves, but for me to bake and make the mess and then have to clean it up, hehe, no thank you!

I bake something every week or so....but i enjoy baking, and 'bad things" don't usually happen when I do, other than us eating it all within a couple days!

However, I AHTE storing anything in the oven, for that particular reason, not even pots or pans. Once time, at my grandparents' house, I was dog-sitting and I preheated the over without looking inside ( my parents and I have never stored things in the oven) soon, I smelled a burning smell. I ran to the kitchen, and there was smoke rolling out of th eoven - my grandpa had put a paper bag of chocolate covered peanuts and a plastic bag of chips in there on top of the cookie sheets and frying pans!

My husband likes to store the cast iron pans we have in there, but i hate it, and put them in the storage drawer underneath, instead.

I think your sister is right, most people only bake for special occassions, unless theya re people who enjoy it particularly.

Lots of casseroles and cobblers.... its the best way to warm up the house and make it smell special when coming in from the cold. The more you do it the more you will enjoy it. It gives you something to look forward to after bbqing all summer. Like, we never eat meatloaf in summer, it's one of our winter meals, many are reserved just for winter time.

Maybe I'm unusual too, because I bake about once or twice a week. I try not to do too much sweet stuff, but on a low budget and looking for healthy things to eat (and since I'm home with the kids and have the time here and actually enjoy it) I make little things here and there. As I'm typing this I'm making home-made pop-tarts (much healthier than store bought ones). I make things like, biscuits for breakfast, quick breads, muffins, homemade graham crackers, taco shells (does that count as baking?) etc.
