Hi:
I am relocating to Indianapolis, Indiana with my husband a two children and we are looking for an apartment to rent, and would really appreciate any recomendations, since I've never been in Indianapolis. We want a safe place for our family and many of the reviews I've seen from some apartments talk about drugs and stealing, among others, and of course that's not the environment I want for my children. I want a place where we can go out to the patio without any worries. I would really appreciate any help or advise of any kind.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Finally, after many research we decided to move to Avon and we rented in Steeplechase at Shiloh Crossing Apartments. We'll be moving there next week. Thank you very much for all your help.

Hi Y.,
One thing you will notice about Indy is the main highway called I-465. It is a big circle that goes around the city. You can do laps around it and not get lost. :)There are 4 "sides" of the circle that it makes called the East side, West side, North side and South side. I, for example, live on the far west side in a town called Avon. For the most part, if you stay on the "outside" of the circle that I-465 makes then you typically will find newer and possibly safer apartments to choice from. There ARE nice places inside 465 but if you were to ask people from here I know you would get the same response. I have lived here most of my life. It seems like the farther outside 465 you go the nicer it gets. Its just growing and that is the outcome. Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Hi Y. -

With the low interest rates, have you considered buying a house??? We actually have our house for sale, but I don't know what your budget is. We are very motivated to sell! We are actually in Westfield, which is in the suburbs just north of Indianapolis a little. I'm not too familiar with apartments, but you definitely want to go to the outskirts of the city either north, south, or west, but not east since that's more of the rough part of Indy. Hope that helps! Good luck!

Hi. I live on the SouthEast side in an apartment complex called Heathmoore. It's all on one floor. Patio in front or back. About $650 a month. Pets allowed. Several open lawn areas. Good school district. Nice maintenence staff. GREAT neighbors! Good luck with your search!

Hello Y., We lived at North Willow Apartments on the Northwest side of Indianapolis. The apartments had plenty of space and seemed reasonably priced. We rented a 2bedrm 2 full bath (1250 sq ft) for around $750 per month. It does have a patio also, and the spot we lived in had a huge common area behind it, so there was plenty of room to run around. I lived there for 1 1/2 years and never had any problems. The maintance people were very respectful, and they always promptly fixed any problems we had. (we only had one or two minor service issues the whole time).

Hi Y.,
I used to be a property manager in various areas around Indy for over 8 years and I know a lot about different apartment complexes around the city. I would be glad to give you advice on which ones are good and which are not. A great resouce for looking for apartments is apartmentguide.com and then after you find a few you are interested in I can try to give you my take on them if I can.
Since leaving the apartment industry I have started a real estate company and I also work with homes for rent and for sale. If you have any interest in renting, or maybe even buying, a house I can also help you. I am also a representative for a non-profit organization called Single Parent Properties that helps Single Parents or Families with educational tools towards home ownership.
If you are interested you can go either to my website, www.kirkrealtygroup.com or www.singleparentproperties.com or you can email me.
Good luck in your search and welcome to Indianapolis!

Where will you husband be working (side of town)? We live in Carmel area. I would suggest Carmel or Fishers which would provide you with some security but also provide you with a lot of parks and activities for the younger children.
