Hi Moms,

My son has had a wet cough for about 7 days now.. Other than coughing, he's TOTALLY fine and would never know he was sick.. I don't bring him to the doctor over small things, plus with a cough they won't even give him anything... Any suggestions what I can give him to knock this cough out?

What can I do next?

If he's a baby, he may just be "practicing" coughing, and not be sick at all. Also, if he's a baby he may be teething, and producing more saliva than usual which can cause a cough as it drips into the throat. HTH!

If the cough is due to allergies you might want to try an antihistamine. Sounds like he has sinus drainage in his lungs.

Sounds like he has a bit of post nasal drip. That is something my 4 year old has been dealing with a lot lately. Try giving him some claratin or zyrtec and see if that works. Otherwise, I would also suggest musinex caugh suppresent and expecterent (sp) for kids. They have it in a powder that the kids just swallow - my kids love it, but hate medicine in general. Outside of that, Nasonex for kids is the BEST! But that would be a prescription. It is more than likely allergies. Good Luck!

Elderberry syrup and neti pot. Neti will help the drainage from his wet cough. I agree with the humidifier too. We purchased two from Walgreens that is a cool mist sonic one... it's very nice for about $30. Only neti if he is over two or three... so he can stand over a sink for the drainage.

If he is over two try a small amount of local honey in the morning and then again before bed. It really helps.

Have you tried Benedryl? I know it sounds weird, but my son's allergies seem to cause drainage, but instead of coming out his nose, the drainage goes down his throat, which causes him to have a "wet cough." Other than the cough, it doesn't appear that there is a thing wrong with him. I only found out about the allergies thing because I finally took him in because it seemed like the cough was NEVER going to go away and that is when the dr. mentioned the allergies idea. I cannot give my son Benedryl (due to medical reasons) so he is on a nasal spray, but the dr would have had me try Benedryl first if he could have taken it.

Good luck!

Sit in a steam filled bathroom with him for a little while. The humidity will help loosen up whatever he's trying to cough up. Set up a cool mist humidifier in his room too. Also, if it isn't resolved in the next few days you should take him to the doctor. He could have allergies or something else going on.

I'll leave the recommendations to others, but wanted to give you a heads-up.

My 4yo grandson had a wet cough that seemed to clear out after a couple of weeks except when he was running or playing hard, when it would flare up again for 20-30 minutes at a time. He didn't seem sick and had no fever. But my daughter finally took him to be checked because the cough persisted, and it turned out he had a bacterial pneumonia. (He was given an antibiotic, and is now fine.)

I had the same thing and waited 2 weeks before going to the doctor. Turned out I had an upper respiratory infection and needed an antibiotic. When my kids started coughing the same way I took them on day 4 of the cough. They all had the same infection plus my 2 1/2 year old had an ear infection and since my daughter was wheezing she got a steroid and breathing treatments. No other symptoms for any of us but a bad cough that we couldn't shake.

Good luck,
K.

Sorry, I didn't say what helps... I found that putting my kids in a steamy bathroom for about 10 minutes helps along with a humidifier in their room. Also, benedryl or sudefed. I also do the natural stuff like echinacea, zinc, elderberry and vitamin C. I hope he's feeling better.

If it doesn't clear up in the next day or so, I'd take him in. I don't take my kids in for every little thing but if they don't get well after 7 days or if they suddenly get worse, I take them in. I just went in for a cough and terrible sore throat thinking I must have strep and bronchitus and they said it was viral and will pass...
