So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I have been working closely with a lactation consultant and she was the one who recommended the prescription for reglan. I will try to avoid that if possible, especially because I live a very organic, chemical-free lifestyle to begin with. I have used fenugreek before, and there are definitely well documented side effects reported on several web-sites. Just a reminder to everyone out there that "all natural" is a catch phrase and doesn't really mean anything. Surely it should not be construed to mean that there won't be any side effects. I got severe uterine cramping while taking the capsules. They were worse than the ones I had in the early days of nursing. I decided to try taking fenugreek again, but at a lower dose. I'm upping my water intake because I may have gotten lax about that. This weekend, I guess I'll be pumping pumping pumping. I already have been pumping 4 times per day plus nursing my son several times. I have noticed some improvement with the extra water and lower dose of fenugreek at least.

I was prescribed that while I was pregnant to help with my awful morning sickness and it made me hallucinate! I would be careful. I realize you are not pregnant, but I have heard that from a few other friends also who felt very out of it, or also had the same affect.

Haven't used this medication but I found pumping more often and drinking more water helped me after I went back to work. I pumped before work, breast fed before daycare, pumped over lunch time(electric breast pump) and pumped again at 4pm or so and breast fed again before bed. It was a lot of effort but I felt the end result was worth it to give my son the best start.

I have. This time around I have a low milk supply and despite all other "natural" methods and so on nothing has increased my supply. I used Reglan and it increased my supply from 1/2 oz. in each breast to 1 oz, but 2 days after taking it my supply decreased again. I am now takling a compound called Domperidone. I am up to 1 1/2 oz in each beast and there are no side effects for baby with this medicine and little for mom. It is used in almost every where but here and Canada very frequently to help moms increase their supply. Let me know if you want more information on it. You can also check out the Dr. Jack Newman website.

Never heard of it, however there is a tea that you can purchase, its called Mothers Milk...you can find it in the natural section of the grocery store. I think its in a red box or package, and its tastes pretty good.

I had some trouble maintaining my supply after going back to work...I am a teacher and just couldn't pump as often as I needed to. I took fenugreek (suggested by the lactation nurse) and it worked! You can buy it at GNC or similar stores. It made me smell like maple syrup but it worked!

Hi C.-
I have not talken Reglan, myself, but have had clients who have (I'm a doula and Lactation Counselor). I'm assuming you are feeling like your supply has lowered. Have you tried other options beyond meds? Have you recently returned to work?
Reglan can have some pretty major side effects and you should be monitored on it carefully -for depression- especially. There is another med. called Domperidone that is often used to boost supply. You have to get it from a compounding pharmacy and I know more moms who have had success with that.
Feel free to e-mail me directly to talk about your situation. ~~W.

Pump Pump Pump! Have you tried to pump inbetween feedings? The more you pump/feed the more milk you will produce. Course, if it were 30 years ago, you would probably hear people tell you to drink beer! That's what my grandma told my mom. Funny huh? Good Luck!!!!

Try using Fenugreek. It's an herb that you can find at GNC, Beyerly's, Lunds and a few other stores. A friend turned me on to it and I was amazed!! My milk supply increased in a day. I was so glad, because I was just about ready to throw in the towel.

I am also one who hasn't heard of it but I would be very very wary of taking any type of medication instead of trying to find a more natural way. If yuo have it, spend the money on a private consult with a lactation consultant, I know they work miracles in this area. If all you need is a little help with more milk they will know what to do, just phone the hospital your babywas born at and they will know how you can contact one.
Also a lot of people recommended fenugreek and I have heard over 80% of women who take it claims it helps so try that first. YOu have to take ALOT tho, one or two pills will not help, think more like 9-12 in a day, my lactation consultant said your urine should smell like maple syrup, that's how you know you are taking enough. Unfortunatly I am one of the 20% that the fenugreek didn't help, I tried it with my son and my twins. I found that brewers yeast helped me, also available at GNC. Again you have to take close to a dozen a day, there are no side effects to either. Fenugreek is a gentle herb and brewers yeast is (obviously with the name) what is used to make beer but it contains no alcohol, its just used in the process. Its a great source of natural b vitamins is all. I went thru 3 gaint bottles with my twins and had no side effects at all, just more milk:)
Again if you are having trouble I strongly recommend getting in touch with a lactation consultant before you take the meds approach.
Good luck

I had to take it. i also had to have 5 refills. It caused no side effects with me or my son. I also have a history of depression and it never affected me in a negative way. It does work. But I had a problem keeping it up and had to supplement w/formula, even with pumping all the time. I also took the herbs that increase supply fenugreek and blessed thistle. also drink lots and lots of water that will help too.

My pediatrician reccommended that I take Fenugreek supplements. (You can find it at GNC). It is a natural alternative that is proven to increase milk supply.

It was recommended to me, but I never took it due to fear of the depressive side effects. I took fenugreek, drank mother's milk tea, which are both a great first line to try, but were not effective for me. I was finally prescribed domperidone, which is now only available in Canada (it is very easy to mail order). It was a miracle drug. My milk production tripled the very day I started taking it. It is expensive at about 50 cents per pill. I was on 3 pills 3 times per day. There are no side effects to the baby that I am aware of, and my only side effect was frequent intestinal rumblings for a few hours after taking the med. I took it for over a year. I believe it is safer and more effective than reglan, but a little more of a hassle to get. I would still start with the herbal options and frequent pumping, but if that doesn't do the trick, domperidone might.

I took reglan for a couple of months after giving birth to my daughter at 32 weeks. I had difficulty producing enough milk for her for a number of possible reasons including 1) she was born two months early and wasn't ready to suckle at the breast so i was pumping and she was getting the milk either by a tube through her nose to her belly or by taking a bottle that was easier for her to suckle 2)I am a diabetic and may inherently be less likely to produce milk. I was concerned about taking reglan b/c it has the possibility of causing depression or exacerbating current depression of which I have a past medical history of. I did not however notice any of these symptoms. the medication seemed to increase my milk supply about 25% which gave my daughter enough breast milk so that i didn't have to give her any formula. there is also a herbal remedy out there called fenugreek [sp.] which i did not try but has fared welled with a lot of moms that i have talked to since. let me know if you have any other specific questions i could help you with. good luck in this challenging time.
