My family is relocating to the Sacramento area. We have 2 children in elementary and I need to know what schools are good and what to stay away from. Also, how does the enrollment process work? I've ready information about transfers and lotteries. Any information you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I also live in Roseville/Rocklin and really like the area. It is a 30-60 minute drive to downtown depending on traffic though so beware if your job is downtown. If you want to be closer to downtown then the midtown and land park areas are nice but I don't know what any of the schools are like.

Hi S.,

Where are you coming from and what part of Sacramento? Is it in the east, north, west, or south? Is this it midtown?

There are a number of great areas around here. I would stay away from Elk Grove. I have a friend who's a teacher there and the schools are a mess. Some schools are extremely overcrowded while others are almost empty. Natomas is another popular area, but you'd be moving into a flood plain (think New Orleans). They've also had trouble getting essential services built, despite all of the homes built there.

We're in Roseville and really like it. Excellent, well planned schools with solid test scores. No lotteries to get in. You just go to the office of your local school and sign up your kids. The school offices re-open in early August, I believe. Rocklin is another good area to consider. Both cities are in the hub of all of the new activity -- tons of shopping, kid activities, parks.

The best area is Granite Bay. Eddie Murphy once owned a home there. It's definitely the most expensive area in Sacramento and has the best schools.

I would find a good realtor who can point you in the right direction. You want someone who knows the area well. If you need a recommendation, just send me a private message and I'll pass along the name of the woman who helped us.

Did you move from another state..then you'll get an eye opener on California's educational system....let's just say..when they need to balance a budget......education is what get's cut first....

when we moved here we wanted to move into a good school district...Elk Grove Unified was one...and I can't remeber what hte other one was...San Juan? not sure...but we moved into Elk Grove....the school my girls go to is awesome and have teachers, staff and parents who are concerned about children's education.

Basically, you need to go ot school office to sign your children up as soon as you get here at whatever school your kids are going to ...If the school is full the school will bus your kids to another school witin the district. The following year, if you kids are bussed to another school, they will get to go to the school they signed up for.
