Removing Wine Labels from Bottles?

Can anyone recommend how to take off labels from wine bottles w/the least amount of damage to the label itself? Anything that involves chemicals or natural substances? I've tried soaking and then scraping, but only got ugly effects - wrinkled or torn up labels.

You can soak the bottle in hot water then fill the bottle with cold water and try peeling the label off. This doesn't always work. You can always keep the cork which will have the name of the winery , web address , and sometimes telephone number. Also at the Paper Place on North Lamar near Central Market they have a wine notebook were you can jot down all info about the wine. When all else fails go to Central Market and ask the guys in the wine dept.

Go to:

If you google it, you will actually find lots of websites to help you. There is even a heavy duty adhesive tape that goes right over the label, basically laminates the label for you (coaster?).

Have you tried a hairdryer? You heat up the label and it pulls off. I use a hairdryer to remove tape, stickers, labels. Dry heat will work and wont mess up your stuff. Just wave the hairdryer over the area and depending on the stickiness you just heat the label up waving the heat back and forth and tell you can pull it off.
Good Luck!

Shaklee's Basic H will remove it without harming the label - it'll disolve the glue - it's a surfacant - makes the water "wetter", if you will. It's completely plant based so it won't hurt ANYTHING but the glue!!!! They make WONDERFUL products.

Goof off. You can pick it up at Walmart, HEB, etc. Takes adhesives right off, no mess.

Mist the bottle with water or windex (not sure on the safety of the windex on the label) and use dental floss or strong, thin thread to remove the label. Use it like a saw- wrap it around the bottle, tuck it under the corner of the label and gently move it back and forth. It should come off. Be very careful if the label is too wet or it will tear.

Good Luck

I'm sure Un-Du Adhesive Remover would work-- it's not oily like a lot of adhesive removers, evaporates like alcohol and doesn't damage paper. You'd still have to work carefully, though.

Un-Du can be really hard to find. Sometimes I can get it at the Container Store, usually on one of the 4-sided racks near the checkouts, but it's worth asking an employee. I really like the stuff.

If you are not trying to preserve the label, try goo-b-gone. You should be able to find it at the grocery store or Target.

Have you tried using boiling water in the wine bottle and also sit it in boiling water?

At wine specialty stores, they sell sticky papers called Label Lift. You press the sticky film over the label, rub it on really well and then peel it off. The end result is like a laminated label.

Hi, I used to work at a restruant that removed the labels and stuck them onto the menus as momentos for the customers.

It was a clear adhesive sticker, youd peel it off the backing it had and stuck it on the label, we had to make sure it was on straight cause when we removed it, the label was stuck on the clear sticker and we then stuck it to the menus. I dont know the name of the sticker they used. I hope this helps. I will try to find out the names for them and repost if I can get that information.

Good Luck!

I personally have not tried this nor have I seen it done on a wine label, but maybe you could try liquid fabric softener mixed with water and spray some on the label to remove it. I saw this technique done on wall paper on HGTV, won't hurt to try. Good luck and let me know if it works.

try putting the bottle in your dishwasher on the shortest cycle, then hot dry. if you take the bottles out right away, the labels should peel right off and not be damaged
good luck!
