We just welcome our first child into the world on 7/7/07, though she is my first I have past experience with my nieces, nephews and friends children. Can't say the same about the father -- he is an only child with absolute no experience with children. I'm looking for a good book for first-time dads for his birthday (10/19) can someone please helps me.

What can I do next?

We had the SAME issue and I didn't really find one book that helped that but the American Academy of Pediatrics "Caring for your child, birth to age 5" is our mainstay because that's what our doc referred to and the info trumped all of the other books we had. If it was in that book, then my husband would respect the information. Good luck.

I got my husband a funny book that puts the humor in fatherhood.

It is called "my boys can swim" We both enjoyed reading it. It was really, really funny.

Congratulations on the new baby and on the awesome birthday!! I totally wanted to do that but didn't plan appropriately.
I just asked my husband what his best reading material was as a new dad and he said that having Spock as a reference and sharing reading Erma Bombeck books with me was really helpful. I don't know that either of those are birthday worthy...I did give my husband the updated Spock for his birthday one year...he kind of grumbled about it, but it happens :-)
Good luck and congrats!

I think the most helpful books give you a "heads up" on what sort of developmental things are going on with your baby. I particularly like 2 books:
1. Touchpoints (by T. Barry Brazelton) - this one is really excellent
2. the "Growing Child" series (see www.growingchild.com) - this is a monthly newsletter with all sorts of great information. It's also a really great baby shower/new baby gift for other couples. (my mom gave us a 4 year subscription)

My husband really liked "The New Father" by Armin A. Brott. His brother gave it to him when our son was born (now 19 months old). Since then he bought "The Expectant Father" when we were expecting our daughter and "Fathering Your Toddler". All by Brott. Congratulations!
