Hello! My stepsister has very kindly asked me to be her son's Godmother and his Baptism will be sometime this fall. I was looking for some unique gift ideas...I have thought of traditional things like a Bible, an engraved cross, etc. but if any of your children have received any Baptismal gifts that you thought were really special/meaningful, I'd love to hear about them.

What can I do next?

I handpaint wooden crosses and personalize them. They are one of a kind! If you are interested I can email you pics of some that I have done.

Thanks
K.

My sister got my son a wooden block off of ebay that was engraved on each side with all the info from his baptism (date, place, godparents, etc.) It isn't something I let him play with daily, but it sits on his dresser and we look at it and talk about it when it catches his eye. I thought it was very unique and is a nice size to tuck away in his memory box when he gets older. Here is the link for a current auction:

Is this a small child? For my son's baby dedication I bought a really soft baby blanket and had a bible verse monogramed on it and then put the date of the dedication with his initials.

M.,

My daughter was recently baptized and received a lot of the traditional items, personalized Bible, gold cross necklace, bonnet that is worn at the baptism and with the removal of a couple of stitches it becomes a handkerchief at her wedding, etc. My sister gave me a different gift I had not seen before. It was a resin figure of an angel holding a baby. There was a baptismal water bowl with the words "I Baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." It is about 8 inches tall and is from the artist Jim Shores. What I liked about it is that it said baptism in relationship to the baby rather than a dedication or a christening. In the Methodist faith we call it a baptism at that age and the child is confirmed later. Just an idea. Mardel's might have this too because I don't know where my sister bought this item. Maybe on-line? Good luck.

Hi M.
I don't have a specific gift idea, but www.etsy.com is a wonderful website to find unique handmade gifts. You can even put in a request for a custom made item and how much you want to pay. Sellers then put forward suggestions of what they can make for you. It is called an "Alchemy request". You do need to register (free) at the website to be able to buy there. But if you like unique gifts, you will be able to find things for any occasion!

I bought my goddaughter a growth chart that hangs from the back of a door. It has places to put in pictures and it has animals all over it. I got this one at Hallmark along with a wooden cross with a nighttime prayer on it. Both gifts were unique and something they will actually use or have out. I know I would have loved marking my boys' height and having dates and pictures on it.

Hope that helps!

Hello M....I had a dedication for both of my children and I think it is such a wonderful thing. I am not sure where you live but here in Denton we have a store called Mardol's. It is a christian store with EVERYTHING you can imagine. Home decor, unique baptism gifts, jewlry, shirts, christian toys, and christian educational learning matriels. It would be a great place to find exactly what you are looking for. I could spend all day in that store and usually spend a fews hours in there everytime I go, so really try it out. Good luck and God Bless!!

Don't know if you are Catholic or not, but one of my favorite places for anything is
http://www.catholiccompany.com/

They have some great things and you can search under baptism gifts and get a ton of hits. They have kids books, and I think there is even a baby baptismal book. I have bought several things from them and NEVER had a problem.
Mardel's is okay for some things, but there is NOTHING Catholic there. Not even the basics like a rosary or
Catholic Bible.

Take lots of pictures and make a scrapbook for him to look at. My son re-lives his baptism often by looking at his. Be sure and photograph all the family and friends who attend and write their names near their pictures. Blessings to you for such a precious, important commitment you are making!
