Seeking Legal Counsel for Descriminatory Practices at Work

I am a single mother and a racial minority who has been working in corporate America since July 2002. I come from the belief that if you work hard and prove your worth, you will be compensated for it. Well, recently I have come across SERIOUS opposition from senior management regarding my annual review. They have instructed my manager to re-write it because it was too glowing of my work. It has been made clear to two department manager's that senior management had a personal problem with me and consequently, I have been overlooked for promotions and treated with hostility as a result of their feelings.I busted my butt and have watched people (over the years) with less tenure and experience at this company get promoted.
I am not supposed to know that my manager has been instructed to re-write my review, however, we both understand that they want me out of the company and she has already voiced her objections to the instructions she has been given. This is simply a snipet of a bigger problem at this company. I need counsel and I am looking for suggestions about what non-profit organizations I could utilize for help (i.e. ACLU, NAACP, etc.). Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

What can I do next?

I'm sorry you're experiencing this situation. Unfortunately in order to actually censure them or have a case of any kind, you're going to have to have proof that you have been passed over and that they're asking for a lesser review on your because of your race or gender. It can be a tough one, and some employers know exactly how to work around it. Also check -if Maryland is a "right to work state" like Georgia is, you can be fired for ANY reason -or no reason! They are not allowed to fire or discriminate against you for race, sex, creed, etc. but YOU have to prove that's what got you the boot. If you have your manager's definite testimony or documentation, then by all means call the ACLU and the NAACP or work on trying to put something together that is concrete proof. I'm sorry -I know it's terribly frustrating.

If the reason they want you out can be proven to be your race or sex, you may have a case for the ACLU, but if it has more to do with a clash of personalities, than I am not sure.

The US Department of Labor Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is equipped to investigate complaints of discrimination based on race, sex, ethnicity. Contact your local office and file a complaint. If the EEOC finds that discrimination has occurred, they will fight to see that you are compensated for any losses that resulted from the discriminatory actions.
