I am seeking a vet, preferably in north Dallas/Plano/Richardson area, who is not on the payroll of the major pet food companies and encourages, or at least supports, the idea of feeding real food (raw or cooked) to pets.

What can I do next?

A lot of the people responding to your request do not understand what you mean by "raw". Cooked table food is not good for animals, but raw meat and bones is just like what they eat in the 'wild', and is much better for their digestive systems. Not to be gross, but you will see a major difference in their poop after they start eating raw. It will become more like wild animals' and will literally disentegrate into a sand-like pile if you step on it. Much less odor, too. My sister is very into all of this for her pets, and has educated me quite a bit. Anyway, go to www.naturesvariety.com. They have frozen raw patties that you can buy. Go to the store locator, and it lists several vets, including the Carrollton one that several have told you about. Best of luck to you! J.

I think you are going to have a hard time finding a vet like that- and not becuase they are on the payroll of major pet food companies. With all the processed foods we eat- even raw foods have chemicals/preservatives/hormones etc... that make pets sick. Pets can get very sick from table foods (I wanted to be a vet and worked for several in high school). I personally saw several dogs sick with what they called "trash can disease"- it looks like parvo with vomiting, diarehea, shakes, temp.- AWFUL!!! Some even died- all from table foods.

IF you want natural foods- try Nature's Recipe (Petsmart) they are a small pet food corp, that only puts natural products (and not by-products) in their foods. Or Nutro.

You might try the Alternative Vet Hospital in Carrollton (at Trinity Mills and Old Denton Road, I think) with Dr. Ballard.

We have used Dr. Ted Staph at High Point Animal Hospital in Plano (SW corner of Spring Creek/Alma) almost 20 yrs. He is great.

I know he has specialty foods available for purchase but I have never been asked or prodded to purchase them. Only once have I purchased some food and it was when one of our dogs was very sick.

He is aware that I often feed my dogs a boiled burger and rice mixture and sometimes chicken.

He is a great Dr. and most of his staff has been there since we started going to him in 1990. He saved one of our dogs. We ended up losing him and another dog to age. My current dogs are under his care and we use the groomer there as well.

Hi J.,

I've used Dr. Shawn at Paws & Claws Animal Hospital before. He's expensive, but knows his stuff. His office is on the corner of Custer & Park behind the Walgreens in Plano. Here's the website. Best wishes! S.

You will want to seek out specifically a holistic vet. There are none in my area, but my traditional vet understands my pet food choices and supports me. He answers my questions and never pushes the traditional foods on me. If you feel comfortable educating yourself, a traditional vet could still be an option esp. since there are so many RAW and BARF forums out there.

ps- because vet care these days is about treating problems and not preventing them, vets recommend the foods they know and those are from the companies that pay to teach the nutrition classes in school. No vet I know receives kick backs for supporting these foods, it's just what they are comfortable with after taking their measly 1 semester of nutrition in school.

Hope that helps!

Hi J.,

I don't think you will find one of those, but we feed our puppy Bil-jac. It's like real food. They tell us not to feed her real food, but that doesn't stop us from feeding her from our table. :~) My husband feeds her steak and brisket all the time. They did say we could feed her all the carrots and green beans she would eat and she loves carrots. We haven't tried the green beans yet. Good luck!!

tough one there since i dont think there are any really our food is bad for them we have little terrier who gets sick anytime she gets anything to eat from table doesnt matter what it is, makes her puke everywhere but does not do this with dog food had always been told it was bad to give them scraps and people food this one proves it in her case it is definetely true but is bad practice to feed real food had 1 that would starve himself if dog food was only thing available until we had something to give him. for the healthiest animal i would recommend it but its your animal and of course it is your choice good luck
