My mom is going to the arthritis doctor today...I will keep everyone updated!

This question is not for me, but for my mother. I was an only child and my parents got divorced when I was three. Well, I am now 27 with two children. My mother got remarried a few years back to my wonderful stepdad and they had a baby! My brother and I are 25 years apart!!! It is so great having a brother. The thing that is not great is all the pain my mom is still haivng...my brother is about to be 3 and my mom is in severe pain everyday. She was in great condition before she got pregnant...she was walking three miles a day. She had normal back pain when she was pregnant but that was about it. Well, a few days after the baby was born, she started swelling up everywhere...face, hands, knees, ankles, feet. Then she was having severe back pain, leg pain, pain in her joints, and her TAILBONE PAIN IS THE WORST! She has been to the doctor NUMEROUS TIMES and has been tested for everything you can imagine!!! and been on every medicine you can imagine!!! She is on thyroid medicne because she had to have her thyroid taken out many years ago and she is on blood pressure medicine. These are the only medicines she takes and takes pain medicine when she needs it because the pain is so bad. I get so sad watching my mom in pain all the time and crying. She says her muscles, joints, and body hurt all the time! Today she said even her arms are hurting. I just don't understand my mom being fine before she had my brother and now on some days she can barely walk!!! I feel so bad for her because when she sits for a long time it is really hard for her to get up and her tailbone is killing her!!! I think the doctor know has referred her to an arthritis doctor. Has anybody been through this or can anyone give me any insight? Please HELP!

What can I do next?

I would see a rheumatologist. I was normal before getting pregnant with my son. Around 5 months pregnant I started having all sorts of pain. It continued after my pregnancy. I went to specialist after specialist to find the answer....turns out to be fibromyalgia. Please research this online and see if it sounds like some of her symptoms. She may have to see more than one rheumatologist. I did. I would go to one and they would say they didn't know what it was and refer me to another...that one would say it could be fibromyalgia....etc. Overall, I ended up seeing over 25 doctors in 2 years. I know live on pain meds along with many different meds. Good Luck. No one deserves to live in this kind of pain.

has she been to a chiropractor? If the doc referred her to Rheum, she's probably had xrays, right? Did they rule out broken anything?

Again, go to the chiropractor. It might not help, but it won't hurt, and it's worth a shot!

during the delivery did she have an epidural? Since the pain is everywhere it sounds like it's nerve oriented. possibly something got pinched when the baby was born or the epidural did something , if she had one.
I second the chiropractor advice. Having a baby can get your body all out of whack and being older it does it even more.

Not sure about the other stuff, but the tailbone sounds like it was broken. I broke mine with my first from all the hard pushing. I didn't know it at first because I had an epidural and everything was numb, but after the epidural wore off, I was in excruciating pain. I couldn't sit up and it even hurt when walking. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do for it except pain meds and time. You can buy a special foam cushion with the tailbone area cut out and this lessons the pressure when you're sitting. I used it in the car for over a year. Tailbones take a LONG time to heal. Walking got better, but was a good two years before I was completely pain free when sitting.

I would try acupuncture. I don't know what is going on, but I really believe in acupuncture and the wonderful benefits it offers. You should truly check it out.
I'm sorry for your mom!

I don't know if this will help your mother but I had in the past I've had severe pain in my joints, back and legs. I to am on thyroid medicine (only because I have a hypo thyroid). I went to an arthritis doctor and the only thing they could find was that I had a vitamin D deficiency. Hopefully the arthritis dr will test her for that. I had to take 50,000 units a week for 8 weeks to get mine back up and now take 2000 daily with 50,000 once a month.

I normally shy away from this kind of answer, but has she seen a chiropractor? I went because my back pain was excruciating, and in the process of fixing my back, my periods more regular than they've ever been in my whole life. He had mentioned that might happen, but I thought "baloney." I do take it with a grain of salt when people say chiropractors can fix everything, but since this started with back pain, it might be at least worth checking out. Good luck!

She ought to get an x-ray of that tailbone. I would also recommend a homeopathic doctor, possibly some herbs and acupuncture. When drugs aren't working you need to look seriously at natural remedies. Good luck.

It could be fibromyalgia. Apparently, in a lot of cases becomes apparent after the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy. It is also thought to be hereditary. My Mom suffered for years before being diagnosed, and now, with a high protein diet and some medication, she feels better than ever. Good luck in finding the root cause of your Mom's pain.
