Severe Dry Skin on Lips

Try using Aquaphor, I use it on my lips in the winter time. It is also good anywhere on the body that has dry cracked skin.

I am probably going to spell this wrong, but have you looked into the possibility that it could be shogrins(sp?)

I was reading through the responses and just want to say, anything with Menthol will burn her lips. I can't use Burts Bess at all, even when my lips are just dry. IT STINGS! Be careful and read the ingrediants. Any medicated balm, ointment, etc... will sting.

I agree with Heather that it could be a nutritional imbalance. Am also wondering if she is drinking "purified" water and what you use for toothpaste. Is she getting some good protein? Has she been on antibiotics where now she needs to have some good bacteria put back in to her digestive system? There are so many different things that can start happening once the digestive system is out of whack.

I suggest using Lansinol. It is the stuff given to breastfeeding moms to help with chapped nipples. Well, as it turns out, that's not the only use for it :o) I've been using that stuff for years now as my little emergency first aid ointment. It protects the lips really well, better than any lip balm.

Also check her habits. She may be licking her lips or biting them to cause the chap.

Check the inside of her mouth for white patches or "furry" tongue. If you find any, that could be thrush, and will need to be treated accordingly. It could also be some form of cold sore, and you could try Carmex or Campho. Otherwise, you might want to check with her pediatrician if it goes on more than a couple of weeks. My girls get chapped the worst in the winter, and I use Burt's Bees on them. It seems to work better than anything else for us. Hope this helps :}

Could be a nutritional imbalance. You might do a search on what which imbalances could cause this. It can also be a symptom of hypothyroid. I have shared this site so much you guys probably think I work for them--LOL--but I don't!

There you should find a list of symptoms, and how to have her tested if you suspect it.
If you or others in your family have hypothyroidism, you definitely need to look into it.

Hi M.! I agree with the lady who suggested that sometmes little things mean a lot. It would be a good idea to talk to your doctor. You mentioned she drinks water all of the time- is it excessive? If it is, she needs to see a dr. right away. I don't want to scare you, but that is the first symptom my daughter had before she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and her lips were also very dry. Also- I would suggest an all natural chapstick that is free from chemicals. Burt's Bees would be a good place to start.

I think I remember hearing or reading somewhere that cracked lips can be a sign of a vitamin deficiency. If this is the case, you really want to take her to a nutritionist, because some vitamin deficiencies can lead to other more serious problems.

Another thing it might be, I think, is an allergic reaction.

My first thought is that she is licking her lips-I've seen 2 nephews and my daughter have very sore lips and below their lower lip just because they get in the habit of licking their lips-more common in the winter because of they dry air. The only thing that fixes it is for them to stop!

Hello M., I would definitly check with your doctor about it being other problems that aren't thought of but I can help her get rid of the chapped lips. First of all don't use anything with petroleum in it, including Vaseline. Petroleum products don't actually penetrate the skin or hydrate them. When it is used in a lip balm it is actually addictive because the lips never get hydrated. My suggestion is to use Arbonne Lip Saver. It has SPF 30 to protect from the sun. It is full of herbs and botanicals that actually hydrate the skin. Let me know if I can help you out with this. ____@____.com

I find Lanolin works very well. You can use the same thick lanolin that is sold for breastfeeding mothers in the pharmacy or baby section of many stores. It is intended for dry, cracked nipples during breastfeeding but works just as well for lips, dry elbows, etc.

I'm with Cynthia on the Lansinol. It works wonders! If that doesn't help clear it up--call your doctor. If it is something more serious--I'm sure they will find out what it is.

You can put some vaseline on them them use a soft toothbrush and massage the lips. then wipe off the vaseline and it will not only hydrate the lips but take off the dead skin so they will heal better.

try Burt's beeswax..it always worked for my little ones and i use it too! you can get it at walgreens, cracker barrel, and i think some Krogers carry it. hope this helps!

Maybe the lip balm itself is drying her lips out. Try just using the vitamin E oil andor some vaseline.

She might be allergic to the lip balm... I am allergic to almost anything that I can find to put on my lips. I have found the best thing for me is just pure lanolin. You might try that. Also, does she lick her lips a lot? My younger brother did that growing up and they were always really chapped and irritated.

My lips do the same thing. I use carmex in the tube. It works great.

What brand of lip balm are you using? I recently found out that "Carmex" is for cold sores and not for dry lips, like it says. We were having the same problem with my son and I asked the pharmasist what to use and he suggested "Blistex". He is who told me about the other. We started to use the "Blistex" and his lips cleared up almost immediately. I hope this helps.

Have you noticed if she breathes through her mouth or nose. She may have an allergy problem causing her to want to breath through her mouth because of a slight stuffy nose. This maybe happening at night more than the day. If she is breathing through her mouth at night this can really dry the lips out. Mine actually will not only get chapped, but will split on the inside from the outside to the gums. If it continues I would get it checked by her ped. Good luck.

no matter what you do please make sure to mention this to her pediatrician. Sometimes these little things mean a lot.
If you do not expect to see the pediatrician within the next six months I suggest you make an appointment now.
