Hello!! I am 12 weeks pregnant with my second child and I am having just horrible migraines and when I do not have an actual migraine I have bad headaches. I never had this problem during my first pregnancy. Anyways my doctor prescribed me Fiorcet (a pain killer) she said that since tylenol was not helping and I was going on 38 hours of a migraine she said pain killers were my only option. I did some online research and found some unpleasant facts about Fiorcet and pregnancy and needless to say that I have not taken it because I am so scared to. However the pain is so bad I just want it to end, I am trying alternatives like a half cup of coffee when I feel them coming on ( I read that caffine helps and I would rather try caffine before the Fiorcet). Any advice from you other Moms you have sadly suffered from these bad bad headaches/migraines during pregnancy would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi. I did not have this problem while prego with either of my boys. I do however have migraines and so does my 4 yr old son. My mom has suffered since she was 7 yrs old. I drank caffinee during both of my pregnancies. There is nothing wrong that the caffinne could have done to my children. They are healthy boys. I think that if you drink it when it first hits you and drink a little more, you should be fine. Tylenol has never worked for me, so if I had a headache or a reason for pain, I would take advil in moderation. Try a dark, quiet room and use a cold wash cloth as well. I would also keep a food diary and when you eat and when headaches occur. Hope you feel better.

I suffer from migraines. If you're doing the caffeine method of prevention, you will probably need at least one cup of strong coffee. Also, make sure that you are drinking lots and lots of water. Most of my migraines are triggered by dehydration. I took Advil Migraine a few times when I was pregnant and my daughter is healthy. I don't recommend taking a lot of it though. Also, you may want to try a chiropractor or a massuese. Sometimes things are just out of line or your muscles are so constricted that they can cause migraines. If you're uncomfortable with the medicine your doctor prescribed, talk to them. Maybe do some research on your own and see if you can find something that's safer for pregnant women. Good luck! Headaches are NO fun.

Hi!! I have been on the prescriptino Fioricet (spelling?) before, for tension headaches, but never while pregnant. Although I have no background to actually tell you whether or not it is safe, I would think it would be. All you really have to do is call a local pharmacy...Whether you are a customer or not...Click whatever number to talk to a pharmacist, and voice your concerns. Doctors are, of course, great, and *usually* know what they are talking about with medicine, but pharmacists are also usually more adept in dealing with actual medicines instead of just diagnosing problems. I hope this helps you out, and don't hesitate to call the pharmacy, and tell them your situation. They will probably put you on hold and check everything that they know, so that it is best for you and the unborn baby. Hope those headaches subside, I feel your pain! Good luck!

I never had a migraine until my 1st pregnancy. With the 1st one, I suffered. I did cut out salt and ate like a rabbit, but still ended up on bedrest 2 weeks before delivery. #2, the doc(a new one)said I could take Advil Migraine until the 3rd trimester. She is healthy as can be now, but we did have what could have been a severe health scare. #3, I tried the caffiene method. It does work, but it needs to be extra strong and drank at the first sign of a symptom. From what my Dr explained...a migraine starts when a blood vessel in your head constricts, causing the "flashies." When the vessel opens back up the blood rushes through causing the pain. The caffiene (main ingredient in migraine meds)keeps the vessel from opening as quickly, therefore alleviating the pain. Once he went through this explanation with me, things made alot more sense, and I was able to experiment with different things including prevention. Watch for common triggers.
