Hello Moms– I am in desperate need of a hairdresser that can work with my short and THICK hair. I am tired of bad hair experiences and looking like a walking bush (in addition to all the Mom stuff I need to deal with daily). My troubles started in January when I decided to chop off my long hair to make my life easier. Yeah Right! Since, I’ve wept for my long hair. Many months later: bad haircut and disappointed. I’d like to look hip, modern and panache.. yet have low maintenance short hair to fit my busy toddler. I think I just haven’t’ found the right stylist. Do you have anyone to recommend to work with me on this? Price is not an issue… .I just want to look good! Someone who is a visionary, creative, and experienced to turn my look around. My location is Stinson Beach. Anything within 20 mi. radius will do. Thanks in advance, all of you good Moms out there!

Marija,

Regarding your hair issues, I have a stylist I have going to for nearly seven years and she is GREAT!! Her name is Khia Payne. She styles hair with precision and maintains its health. The name of her salon is Flawless Hair Designs and it is located in Oakland, CA. The number is ###-###-####. If you contact her, let her know T. referred you.

I'm a hairstylist, and I think that the longer thick hair is the better sometimes, because the length weighs it down. Since your hair is short, I'm sure it has a tendency to become "bushy". If your hair has a coarse texture, try a straightening treatment or flat iron to smooth it out. This will decrease volume. You might also try this trick- slick your hair with gel close to the head and let it dry that way. When it's totally dry, break it up. You'll notice that you have less volume that way.

If you want to grow it out you are going to have a miserable grow out period, I'm not going to lie. Start with clips, or a headband as it grows out, and as it grows a little longer go for lots of layers to keep it as sleek as possible. Or, with extra thick hair, it's sometimes easier to go extra short- that also cuts the volume down. You could try a style like Halle Berry or Victoria Beckham. Very chic.

But I say keep growing it. Once it gets past your shoulders it will be easy. I honestly thing long hair can be easiest to maintain- you can skip days washing and go with a ponytail, you can go months without a cut, you don't need to style it every day. Get a stylist who will follow a "grow out strategy" for you. I hate to see mothers go for the bad new-mommy haircut. You don't have to have short hair just because you had a baby!

Well, I've gone on too long. If you live far from the places people recommend, just ask someone around town who has great looking hair where they go. I'm serious- strangers will not be at all offended by this. Best of luck!

Edwards Salon in Mill Valley. It is on the freeway near the Ferrari dealership. Ask for Julie Cassidy. She is AMAZING! I had the same hair for close to 40 years, showed up to her close to 8 years ago and have loved everything since. She corrected my 40 year old hair color and boring style, then had to fix another huge mistake made by a different stylist I went to in her absence. (She left Edwards for a year or so and I had to find someone else, but as soon as she came back I went running back to her.) She is amazing (did I say that already? LOL) But I hope you meant it when you said price is not an issue, she is not cheap. But she has figured a cut for me that I only have to go 3-4 times a year, and only twice a year for highlights. One of her sayings is "a good haircut doesn't grow out into a bad one, it just gets longer". Good luck, I am going next week.

I recommend Festoons in Berkeley; MLK & Rose. Karen is great w/my short thick hair. I also have gone to Peter Thomas n Berkeley on Shattuck at Virginia & have used Stephanie who did a pretty good job as well. Both salons have web sites.
