I let my 5 year old watch PG movies and depending on the movie - PG-13 also.

The main thing is to watch those movies WITH her so you can explain and or answer any questions she may have about what is going on.

I do, for PG 13 I watch them first though. And there aren't many PG13 movies she's been allowed to watch. Did you know .. the older PG movies...(lol) I let her watch "Adventures in Babysitting" old 80's movie... and everything was all fine until she said "Don't f*c* with the babysitter!" ............ LOL I was like OMG. She only watched that movie once. The newer PG rated movies I think are more strict on that kind of stuff.

It depends on what the movie is about and your child's maturity level.

It's different for every family. PG stands for parental guidance, regardless of whether it PG or PG-13.

G (general), PG, PG-13, R... no movie is right for anyone regardless of age. (Or it wouldn't be G, it would be A -anyone- or E -everyone-, and I really hate that new category, because NOT everything is right for everyone. But the point is, is that it's not wrong or illegal for children of any age to see any movie that is G, PG, PG-13, or R... the ratings are saying that parents need to individually decide. Even R movies are no one under 17 unless with parent. It's up to the parent to determine if it's okay for their particular child.)

My son at 3 was terrified of Disney movies (G), loved pixar (G), loved Indiana Jones and Starwars (PG). MOST G rated things really terrified him (and did for years, there's a LOT of serious 'evil with no redeeming features' in kid's shows/movies that had him in nightmares for weeks), so we didn't watch a lot of G rated things. We DID watch a lot of PG & some PG-13. They didn't give him nightmares, and didn't come along with major behavioral issues (a LOT of cartoons inspired a lot of behavioral issues, either because the cartoon is so 'out there' like hitting someone with a hammer over the head which would make a movie R rated if it weren't a cartoon with limited vocabulary, or because they're choosing certain aspects of childhood and presenting them constantly; like Caillou's whining, or how Arthur and DW are constantly bickering and fighting and trying to get away from each other).

At 9 (just, as in a week ago) my son watches movies and tv that range from G to R. It really depends on the individual movie or show.

read about WHY it's PG. Is it for "sexual content" or "drug related language" or "some violence"? I think you should decide with your husband what you think is okay based on each dvd/movie separately.

I used to be a teacher. I remember having to get parents written permission to show a PG movie to a classroom of 9-11 yr olds. (Specifically for the movie Witches by Roal Dahl, we'd read the book, wanted to see the movie. I don't remember if Winn Dixie was PG or not). We didn't need permission for the G movies. I guess that doesn't really answer your question, but consider it when your daugther comes home from school exclaiming that they got to watch such-n-such movie at school that day.

That would depend on why the movie is rated PG and whether or not you feel your daughter can handle it. Some movies are rated PG because of violence, others for language, others for content. I would recommend watching it with her at first, or checking out the content before she watchs it.

IMO most PG movies are fine for 9 year olds.

I love commonsensemedia.org.

Depends on the movie. These days alot of PG movies should be rated R in my opinion. I usually try & watch the movie first to see if its ok for my almost 11 year old to watch.

I think 9 is old enough to watch PG. I also have a 9 y/o and she watches PG and PG 13. I just supervise and she knows if mom says close your eyes she better do it.

If you feel comfortable with it. Our kids have always been allowed to watch PG as long as we felt it was appropriate. There are SOME movies/shows that we feel are rated incorrectly, but are still marked as PG, and so we don't allow those ones. But, generally speaking, PG is always fine to us...we watch them first, though;-) We aren't interested in sex or violence for them at that age, so if it's not a kid show, I'm more weary.

We used the case-by-case basis. We also used pluggedin.com to check content, etc. The PG movies now days are a lot different than the PG movies from 10 years ago. I would be very careful and protect her as long as possible. Any image that hasn't been introduced to the brain can't be recalled later. Something to think about.

I never made such a much about movies and ratings. They are hearing and seeing so much in other children's houses that what can you protect them from. I'd rather they watched sex than violence. So I only screened for violence.
And, once I went to a movie with my twelve year old where the only clean words were THE and AND. I asked for my money back.

we make our decision on content rather then ratings, I prefer to use plugged in movie review online ( www.pluggedin.com )to determine what I'm comfortable with... as far as those who say "I watch with my kids, so if they have any questions" that cracks me up because they will have questions but many of them wont be asked to a parent... and my kids are very talkative and do ask questions a lot, but believe me that's not a good excuse to allow your child to watch something they are not ready for. I check things out on plugged in online, then decide what is acceptable for us and what isn't, we are not okay with to much sexual situation and okay with some violence, we are religious and are okay with movies that support our religious point of view, such as the Narnia movies, but not other violent films. I also have three boys, so a little more violence is more acceptable in our opinion, and chick flicks are something they are NEVER interested in, so I don't have to deal with that option. you have to make that decision for you daughter your self, I think in if I were in your shoes I would be VERY protective about sexuality shown in movies, that is something very important for me, and I would want my daughter (if had one, which I don't) her purity is something I wouldn't take lightly and I'd be very protective of it, I'm that way with my boys too! check out my recommended website about movies you are interested in... it doesn't tell you yes or no but it tells you what you will see and let you make an informed decision.

In general, my kids know PG is OK. They are 3 and 6. If I am renting or buying a movie for them, I still use my discretion based on content (language and violence are the issues we have to be most concerned about with our boys). For example, we did NOT let them see The Last Airbender or The Karate Kid when they came out, and we tend to be more restrictive with "real" movies versus animated ones. But that's just our specific situation. In general, my boys know if they are at grandparents or friends or other family and mom and dad aren't there go give the yes or no, if it's PG then they can watch it. We had not taken them to see any of the Narnia movies because of the big battle scenes and the witch (my oldest is easily scared by the non-animated characters that are "evil"), but it's only rated PG and he watched it at a babysitter's house. He did fine with it and really enjoyed the movie, and we just talked later about the scenes that I felt might be too intense or confusing for him. As a general rule, I would absolutely let my 9 yr old watch PG. On TV, we do NOT allow the Y-7 rated shows; we find those too violent or crude in general.
