The only way to get rid of the aspartame would be to switch to another form of the medicine, like a tablet that is not chewable. Maybe they make Singulair in a dosage small enough to break in half and hide it in food for her or something. The reason the aspartame is in it is to make it taste sweet so you need it in a non- chewable, non-liquid form.

I am highly allergic to Aspartame, and get migrains from it. Also if you do more research on asaprtame itself it contains phermeldahide (sorry about spelling)....you know embalming fluid......I believe it is a very very small dosage, but still....

I see that 1 person mentioned the granules. My son takes this form of Singular and it has been working very well. You just mix it with applesauce, carrots or ice cream....he eats a lot of carrots and applesauce needless to say....and ice cream on occasion too! Anyway it's very easy to get him to take it every night. Ask your doc about it if you want! :)

Good for you that you researched the medicine! Also, having the intelligence to research the vitamins you were giving her and know there are vitamins that give a better value for your dollar.

Having your daughter on a good natural multi-vitamin is great! There are ways to strengthen her immune system in addition to the multi-vitamin. Strengthening her immune system, will increase her chances of getting off the prescriptions. With a strong immune system, allergies and ear infections are significantly reduced with the potential of being non existing.

It sounds like you know the harmful affects of aspartame. How insightful you are. It is great to know there are other moms out there who want to know what they are putting in their children's bodies.

You may want to reconsider giving her Singulair at all. Check out medications.com and look at some of the very scary side effects of this drug. Aspartame is only part of the issue with this drug.

T. thats not all that medication does, there was an article back in spring that singular causes severe depression, my daughter has allergies too and you know I wouldnt put her on that, I use over the counter Zyrtec which she didnt like very much so we use it only when she is really bad otherwise I control her environment, cleaning her bed and room alot and we broke out and bought an air purifier which was the best investment ever, it works 10 times better that any medication did

I am constantly amazed by what manufacturers do to our food and the products we use every day. One that stumped me was formaldehyde in mascara, that is really close to your eyes!

My husband was on allergy medication and I had seasonal allergies until we switched to green cleaning products. We were at my inlaws over the weekend and came back with my daugher sneezing and my husband all stuffy! It really works! None of the cleaners we use have safety caps on them and they work!

Is your child taking chewables? Depending on the dose, you may be able to switch her a regular pill. It may be small enough for her to swallow and there shouldn't be any aspartame in those.

Aspartame is found in diet foods/drinks, it's found in Equal/Sweet n Low. It will produce false MS symptoms if prolonged.

If it was me, right now, I would discontinue and see if there isn't something else without any Aspartame. Look the ingredients up on the internet and research.

go online and see if there isn't anything holistic or alternative that would work as effectively without the bad effects.

It's really not that big of a deal. Only you and your doc can weigh the risk/benefit ratio of the medication. Singulair is an amazing drug that has changed the lives of many children. Asthma is a disabling disease and preserving lung function is key in preventing bigger problems later. Severe allergies can seem disabling, too...so you have to weigh the risk.

I'm not a big fan of Aspartame either. Did you know that there are compounding pharmacies that can custom mix drugs for kids? You could tell them that you want Singulair with Stevia (or sugar) instead of Aspartame.

I would go to a health food store and ask their opinion on allergy products for children. I take bee pollen which works wonderfully for allergies and is completely natural. Or you could go to www.mercola.com and type in allergy medicine and children to see what Dr. Mercola might have to say. He has helped me in so many situations. He knows natural and medical solutions to everything.

I am so glad you posted this. My children and I don't have allergies but I had no idea aspartame was in any of the medicines you mentioned. Sometimes my kids have taken Augmentin but they won't any more.

My daughter is also on Singulair. Yes, the chewable tablet does have Aspartame in it. I was not thrilled about this when I found out either. I try to feed my daughter healthy food with no artificial sweeteners, and then her medication has it!! There is a form that comes in granules and that does not have the artificial sweetener in it, as well as the adult pill, if she is old enough as someone had mentioned. I have not tried the granules, so I don't know how easy it is to give??
And, I wouldn't worry too much about the suicide risk as someone had pointed out. If you read the drug inserts for just about anything you'd be afraid to take anything! It's good to be informed and aware, but I don't think there's any need to be alarmist about everything. I know Singulair has worked wonders for my and my daughters asthma and allergies and has kept us off of stronger medications and steroids with no side effects.

If your daughter is old enough and can swallow pills... Singulair is available in a tablet.

The dose is probably higher than the childrens dose that she is taking.

I guess you have to decide whether you would rather have your child sick with bad allergies or take a medicine that you do not agreee with.
