I have a 5 year old daughter, who will be 6 in April. She still drinks out of a sippy cup at home and her grandparents. I'm sure she has gotten to old to use it, yet she doesn't want to stop. Any suggestions on ways to help her?

What can I do next?

Just take it away.. Throw it away at night when she is sleeping. Let her know big girls drink from regular cups now.. Do the same thing like if you weened her from bottles to sippy cups..or bottle at night when she was younger..
My daughter yelled and screamed for 2 nights when she no longer had that bottle at night as comfort..so when she transitioned from sippy cups to regular cups at 3.. we had no problems

K.,
When my son was 3 1/2, we went a trip to the beach for a long weekend. Before I left, I put all the sippy cups in "storage." He asked about them a couple of times but after that he forgot about them. A cup with a straw was a good transition for us. My pediatrician has always told me that parents usually think that changes are going to be a more difficult for children than they actually are. I have found this to be true.

Take it away from her period!! No ifs ands or buts. I'm asuming with her age she is going to be starting school this fall if she isn't already and there sure as heck aren't sippy cups in kindergarten. Not only that, but kids can be cruel and I'm sure she would be called names and tessed once word got out about her using a sippy cup. And so your oldest doesn't fell that it is just her, take them away from your 3 yr old as well. At home and at Grandma's house. But just explain to her that they are big girls and big girls drink out of regular cups. Take them to walmart and have them pick some small plastic ones for them to use at both houses. Take the sippy cups and throw them in the trash can outside never to be used again!

Good luck!

I have 5 kidds 8 and under- ther older three use sport cups and the younger two sippy cups. This way the big kids aren't using little baby cups but it is a lot less fuss than a regular cup.
I say stick with what doesn't spill!
You can get a child size sport cup and walmart- are kids only drink water in them so they refill and place in the fridge for later use=-)

My son will be 5 in march and he still had cups with straws but he usually just drinks out of a regular cup, so I think your child should be using a big girl cup by now..and do away with the baby sippy cups, atleast get her ones with straws.

I have a five year old and a 3 1/2 year old. They have just gotten out of the sippy cup thing in the past year. What we have started doing is bringing home the cups with lids they get with kids meals in restaurants (mostly zaxby's and olive garden and buffalos). These wash great in the dishwasher and throughout the past year or so we have accumulated quite a few. So...we just reuse them with straws. This is training them to not turn the cup "up" to drink and they are getting better when we are somewhere and they have to drink without a lid at all...which is something I don't want to do as long as I can help it!!! They also like to drink out of water bottles, and do pretty well with that as long as they don't take it around the house.

I have a six year old who still drinks out of a sippy cup but we only let her at night and tell her she needs to drink from a big girl cup during the day. Maybe if you got a special cup for just night time use and one for during the day that could help!

My daughter was about 5 when I finally ordered the cups from Tupperware that are spill proof and you use straws with them. You can get them in small sizes all the way to 16 oz. I told her that they were big girl cups and she was cool with that and I had the spill part covered. Good luck. M.

What you should do is find a way for her to give her sippy cup to a smaller child, not a sibling, but maybe one of your friends who has toddlers. Make sure she understands that she is a big girl now and big girls drink out of big girl cups. Take her to pick out two or three new "big girl" cups that are hers. You can do the same with your 3 year old, she is also old enough to use a big girl cup. This will also help your 5 year old want to give up her sippy cup if her little sister is doing it too. Your older daughter might also like it if she can teach her little sister how to use a big girl cup. I have a 4 year old and a 16 month old, and my 4 year old loves it when she can teach her little sister how to do or say something. If push comes to shove, you could always take and throw them away when they are sleeping and say that a sippy cup elf or fairy came and took them because they are big girls now. Good luck, L.

As long as she can drink out of a lidless cup....dont worry about it. I make my son use one in the car. It also is wrapped around the 3 yr old probably still using one. If the 3 yr old is using one then it is probably an attempt to stay a baby and in your eye's attention. I wouldnt worry about it.

Try the straw version. Or try the cups from the restaurants with straws and lids....remarkably they are dish washer safe.

Buy her a really pretty "big girl" cup with her favorite design or character. But explain to her she has to "trade" her sippy cup for it. Be sure to get the sippy cup out of the house immediately after the trade. No going back.

She's not too old for sippy cups at all (And it saves your furniture)! But, if you feel it's time to transition, try the cups with straws first. Cool straws also help. My 13 year old still loves the wiggly straws and crazy colored ones. She'll get milk containers if she buys lunch at school when she starts kindergarten and they give straws too. They grow up so fast, trust me. You don't want to rush it.

Throw all the sippy and plastic cups away. They don't really get sterile anyway. Give her the small glass juice glasses and tell her that this is what grownups use. She can either use the glass or she won't get any milk or juice. It is amazing how quickly they adapt. We babied my third child and let him use a covered cup and a straw for a year (from 4.5-5.5). We gradually started just using the glass cups and he has never said a word. Of course, they need to be sitting down at the table to drink, they can't wander around the house. Good luck!

My son is seven and still uses a sippy cup. To be honest I do it to save the furniture and carpet. On my opinion, ( lol since I'm no professional. If she only does it at home or the grands let her do it. She will let you know when she doesn't want it.

Try the straw "sippy" cups - spill proof lids with straws more for her age and she still doesn't spill. However, you are right. At this point she should be using "real" cups. Short of cold turkey taking away the sippy cups...

My 4 and 2 year old use the straw sippy cups when we are in the car to help prevent spills/mess. At home/grandparents/reach destination real cups are all they use. We also have the rule that cups don't leave the kitchen (so spills don't happen on the carpets).

Good luck!

When my son went through the same thing, I bought him a 99 cent cup from k-mart that had a straw attached. he was so proud of his "big boy" cup and always was careful to not spill it. I wish he did the same now, he is 8 and spills everything. We have the stickiest seats at the hockey arena. If that doesnt work, do like my mom did with my pascifier, I wasnt allowed to have my 3rd birthday until it was given up, I actually had to give the pascifier to the lady at the cake store to get my birthday cake! I actually use that one every year at birthday time on my son to pass some milestone like potty training, bathing himself, etc. Good luck. JillB from Columbia, SC
