Sippy Cup Failure:(

My 11 month old son will not drink from a sippy cup. He throws it across the room every time. Should I be holding him while trying? He will drink from a regular cup with my help but will throw that too if I let go. Help!

What can I do next?

My 1 year old never took a sippy cup either. He prefers a cup with a straw. He also will throw it when he is done. I think it is part of discovering what things do. Babies like to throw things, just don't give it back to him right away. He will eventually learn not to throw it.

I no advise . . . but if misery loves company, I'm in the same boat. My 10 month old will have nothing to do with a sippy cup. I have 4 different ones I randomly try and she'd rather watch the milk drip out onto her tray :-(

He's a baby. Of course he's going to try to throw it. It's not a failure.

Yes, hold it right now. Help him get used to drinking from a cup so that you can wean him off the bottle. Drinking is far different from sucking. It's a skill he has to learn. Use both a regular cup and a sippy until he masters them. And help him hold it with his own hands as well, so that he learns to hold AND so that he can't throw.

Our children did that too. The game is called "Watch mommy pick it up". When our children didn't get any more or get the cup handed back to them, then the game wasn't fun any more.

Good luck to you and yours.

Does he understand what the sippy cup is? Seriously, most kids need to first understand what a sippy cup is. When I was first teaching my kids about this I used Playtex and Gerber and removed the valve. It leaked a little bit, but they got the idea, "Oh, there's milk in here." It only took a couple of hours (if that long). At that point I put the valve back in, and they were both good to go.

Does your child show any interest in what you are drinking? Sometimes Pretending to drink from a sippy cup will entice them.. and YES, you will need to hold it in the beginning, he has no idea what it is.

Sounds like he's not ready. Give it a break & try again in a month.

I am not so sure (in general) why our society wants our kids to grow up so quickly.

We had the same problem. Skip the sippy cup and go for the straw cups. According to our Occupational Therapist, the sippy is the same "movement" as a bottle, whereas the straw cup requires different mouth muscles to be developed. She actually told us she'd prefer he skipped sippy altogether. We like the munchkin straw cups.

Have you tried the nuby sippy cups from wal-mart? They have a soft plastic almost bottle like nipple (Almost being the key word). They are an easier transition because it's not as hard to get the liquid out of them as some of the other sippy cups out there. Plus, they are only like $2!

If you have tried those and those have failed as well, mine also really likes the straw in the cup with a lid (But you have to hold those, which I assume you are trying to move away from).

Oh, and the 'watch mommy/daddy pick it up game' is also one of my son's favorites ;)

some little ones take longer then others. Try a few different ones and if nothing happens then give it some more time.

My thoughts...
Some babies hate sippy cups and will never use them. My sister got frustrated at 7 months because her gums hurt from teething, she picked up my regular cup before I could stop her, put it to her mouth, drank the milk out of it and never would take a bottle after that. Just try the regular cup, sippys aren't a necessity.
Another thought is he doesn't know he's supposed to hold it and drink from it, show him at the same time he's drinking how you drink from your cup. Modeling is how babies and toddlers learn how to eat, drink, go potty, etc. And it takes time, they don't get it until they get it.
A third thought is he wants to see Mommy jump to get the sippy as it hits the floor, it's a game and you play it. Either keep the sippy once he throws it and don't give it back to him until the next mealtime or get a a strap that attaches his sippy cup (or bottle or paci or toy) to his high chair, car seat, stroller, a shopping cart or his fave ride-on toy to keep them from hitting the floor. Game over. I just purchased some of these Sippy Secure Straps in several different colors for a couple of moms i know...wish I'd known about them with my little guy, he perfected throwing to an art ; )

well, I'm old school. If you don't give him the bottle, then he'll eventually learn that the cup is his only drink. It's not cruel, it's not mean.....it simply means that you mean business!

I'm also a firm believer in not switching cup styles/brands. Pick one you like & the battle is 1/2 over.

I also do not believe that he's too young....my sons were both using cups by 8 months & so are all of my daycare kids. :)

I had to try a couple different kinds. I got the NUK one, the nipple is more of a nipple from a bottle as far as look at feel. NUK has different ones.

She seems to like it! But she isnt crazy about it when she has one before sleep time. She wants to drink slower before bed, its a comfort thing. So, the sippy is too fast. But other than that she likes it! and I just gave it to her, and she took to it.

Wait a couple of months, then try again. My daughter never really drank from a sippy cup. She learned to drink from a regular cup with no lid by 14 months, and used a bottle at bedtime for milk. She hated sippy cups, most are so hard to get anything out of. We had to take the valves out for her to use them, then they are no longer "spill-proof". Sippy cups are not a necessary product. They didn't exist when I was a child.

I just went through this with our little foster baby. She LOVES her bottle, and wanted nothing to do with a sippy cup. I just kept giving it to her with every meal and every snack. She still isn't crazy about it but knows I am not giving up lol and is using it now. Just keep trying everyday, every meal, put it on the tray. Its the same with new foods, keep trying a tiny bit. It takes a few times for some children to be willing to try new things. Good luck!!
