Skin Sensitivity on 21 Month Old Daughter

My 21 mos. old daughter has a round, light circle that has appeared on her chest. It is not raised up and it has been around since she was born, just seems to be getting darker. Could this be a birthmark? Also, she seems overly sensitive to temperature and unable to cool herself down. If the bathtub is even lukewarm, she breaks out in a heat rash. Playing outside, even when not hot, she breaks out in a rash, gets clammy skin, and her hair actually sticks to her head in sweat. She also gets very fussy. She does have a heart murmur and I am taking her to the doctor this weekend, just wanted to check if other moms had ever heard of anything like this. Her twin sister doesn't have any of the symptoms. Anyone experienced or heard of anything similar?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of the advice. Turns out that the "birthmark" is actually ringworm. Apparently, it is very common for kids to pick this up, especially if they play in sandboxes. Ringworm actually is not a worm in the body. It is an external skin fungus, treated with cream. The doctor thinks she may be more sensitive to heat, but doubts it is a thyroid problem or anything serious. She said the flushing, etc. actually shows that the body is cooling and doing what it needs to do. Thanks!

Hi B.,
I am sorry that I don't know anything about the light circle that you talked about, but the sweating sounds just like my son. When he was little he used to sweat profusely when he went outside and it did not have to be hot. He would sweat on any exercise and when he was asleep as well his head would be wet. We took him off all dairy products for other health reasons and with 3 days the sweats had gone. It was really amazing.
Hope this helps. THere are a lot of other alternatives to milk so even if you try it for a week you may see a great change.
Kind regards,
W.

My daughter is 27 months old...has very sensitive skin...you can just touch her and her skin will turn red and appear irritated. When she was a newborn, her pediatrician noticed how red her skin was after I had undressed her so that he could do the exam. He asked if she was bothered by it (she's not...I have the same type of skin and even when it appears irritated...it doesn't really itch or burn) and said that if seems to itch or bother her that I should put Hydrocortizone cream on it. So after that anytime she has problems with her skin...dry skin...rashes...bug bites, etc. I used the Hydrocortizone and it really helps. I even apply it to her rosy cheeks when they get dry or wind burned or just appear irritated. Her cheeks can turn red and rosy by just running around the house. My daughter also has a murmur and has seen a cardiologist. They performed an EKG and an Echo Cardiogram...the Dr. said she has the most common murmur (Still's Murmur) and that she is fine. She said the murmur sounds worse than it actually is. I'm sure your daughter is fine, too, and this may just be a case of sensitive skin!!

Sounds like a birth mark. Two of my girls have a strawberry mark on their foreheads and one has a hemangioma on her back. That one I had to have lasered because it kept getting infected but I think your daughter's mark is probably fine.

My 4 year old has always been like this too. She has very sensitive skin and I have to be careful about detergents and things as she gets rashes. She has to have very cool water for bathing or she cries in the tub.

They say her heart is fine but for the first couple of years her face and hands and feet would turn purple for seemingly no reason! We took the girls to the park on Saturday and we had to make her sit down and rest while the other girls played because her face was so red and her blond hair was drenched in sweat. The other girls were fine.

She also says she is tired a lot and isn't very active. She would rather sit in the floor and play with her horses then run around, dance, or go somewhere.

I'll be interested in reading the responses.

I have an oval shaped birthmark on my cheek right next to my ear. It is actually about the same size as my ear. My mother said that it didn't show up until I was several weeks old and it has gradually gotten darker over the years. Also, my mother spoke of me being overly sensitive to heat. I would break out in heat rashes and she would have to turn the air down so I wouldn't sweat so much. She said that she could add very little hot water to my bath or I would scream that it was burning me. Once I was old enough to bathe myself I didn't add hot water until I got into my 20s. Even then it would only be enough to take the chill off and I would usually only do that during cold months. I have always sweat a lot and had to start wearing deodorant around 7 years old. During the warm months (most of the year around here) I am usually seen carrying around a 64 oz insulated cup of ice water so I can keep cool. I probably drink 3 or 4 of those a day. I can now take a luke warm shower without feeling it is too hot. I am in my 30s and I have never been told that there is anything medically wrong with me as far as being sensitive to heat. I don't know how much this helps but that's my story.

I suspect that it is not a heat rash. i have always broken out in a rash after bathing b/c of the soap and shampoo. It has harsh chemicals in it that can cause this type of reaction. The laundry detergent can also cause a reaction like this too and can be aggravated when she gets hot.

I finally found some all natural products that do not cause a reaction. I am so excited! It is the first time in my life that I can wash my hair and not have a severe, itchy rash! You should use products that don't have any preservatives or dyes in them. That's what I do.

Also, does she have more hair than her twin? Sometimes they sweat more; they are like a chimney! If she is sweating that much then her body is cooling itself off. What color is her hair? If it is dark, it will absorb more heat too.

Blessings,
M.

I saw a late-night television show that had a guy with serious sensitivities and his ears and feet would turn blue with cold and eventually with any slight temperature change...he had a problem with his pancreas...maybe you should ask pedatrician about it. My now four year-old daughter used to get mottled (small splotches of red and white) when she was a baby and she has really sensitive skin now. She has allergies too and is always "itching" so she is on claritin and benedryl...may be the case in the future.
