Small Amniotic Sac

I have recently discovered I am pregnant again for the 3rd time. I have an amazing 18 month old daughter, and I had a miscarriage in February. Now I am abt 7 wks pregnant again. During my initial ultrasound the dr said that amniotic sac was abt 2 weeks smaller than the baby, but the baby, yolk sac, and hormone level were all dating the same. There is virtually no information out there about what my odds might be, just personal anecdotes, so I am wondering if any of you have had this problem and how it turned out. I had another ultrasound today, baby and sac still growing, but sac still dates about 2 weeks smaller than baby. Going back in another week for another ultrasound (love my OB who is not going to make me wait for weeks!). He says things like this usually resolve themselves around 8-9 wks- one way or the other...

What can I do next?

I did have this issue. My best advise is to make sure you are intaking plenty of fluids.

When I was pregnant with my 3rd I also had a small sack with not a lot of fluid. Had many ultrasounds through out my preg. and their was never a lot of fluid. The dr could never explain why but finally decided to induce a couple weeks early. I had a 5lb 13oz baby who was very healthy. I think some times the drs can make you worry for problems that can be very common. I am sure as long as you are continuing to feel fine every thing will be OK. I wish you the best and hope everything goes smoothly for you and your baby.

S.,
I would like to offer you some reassurance. I have been doing ultrasounds for 13 years. When we measure anything, there is always a +/-. Meaning, when your sac measures 5 wks, it's ALWAYS plus or minus about 2 wks. The +/- of the baby (fetal pole) itself is 1-2 days. There has to be some "room for error". Typically, when the fetal pole (baby) can be measured, the gestational sac is no longer measured, as it's accuracy is not good. If your baby is growing appropriately, as it sounds like it is, I wouldn't worry a bit. If you are uneasy, you can always see another OB/Gyn for a brief 2nd opinion. I'm not sure where your OB is, but the doctor's I work for are in the Medical Center. Just a suggestion to help you ease your mind. Good luck to you!!!

((hugs)) I have had several miscarriages so I know how you feel! I don't really know much about the condition but I DO know several people who had the 7-9 week U/S and were told there was no heartbeat and they needed a D&C. They waited and had a 12 week U/S and voila! a healthy baby. So, keep hoping! It's good the baby is growing and hopefully the sac won't impede it any.

S.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I wish you all the best for a full-term, healthy delivery! I have not experienced your situation nor do I really have any direct information to share. But, I wanted to tell you about Preemies Today. It is based out of Washington DC. They have a website at www.preemiestoday.org. You can join for free. Then you have access to their online chat group. There may be moms of preemies that have experienced your situation that could offer advice. You may also check on the March of Dimes website. They typically have a wealth of knowledge about issues related to pregnancy. I believe there is a place to post questions if you don't find what you are looking for. http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/188.asp

Good luck to you! Feel free to contact me if I can be of further help.

Check out a website called misdiagnosed miscarriage(google). You are bound to find out something for sure on there. They helped me when I had a rough pregnancy and found a wealth of information and support about my condition! Good luck and god bless you and the little bean!

I don't have any first hand knowledge of small sac, but did go through a miscarriage and I was compelled to answer. I don't mean to offend you by being overly religious since I know nothing about you, but I believe that if this baby is meant to come to you healthy and strong, it will. If God has other plans for this child, believe you will be together eventually. You and the baby will be in our prayers. If you lose this baby begin thinking of how you will cope. I witnessed a terrible tradgedy befall the family of a little girl in my daughter's class...not the fact that they lost another baby, but that they were losing sight of the one they already had. Grief is necessary but take care of yourself and make sure your hormone levels don't put you into a severe depression. We had to keep trying and I was eventually blessed with three angels. (our middle was conceived one month after a miscarriage.)
