So Sad My Neighors Are Moving - but Not Because We Are Friends

How screwy is that? My next door neighbors will be moving and renting their house out. We are friendly when we see each other, but we are really not friends. These folks are great because they have 3 kids, they are quiet, and never bother anyone. They are basically like us...they go to work and raise their kids. I hate to think of who might move in as a renter...Good neighbors are really hard to come by...we have a woman across the street that is insane and calls code enforcement on everyone all of the time...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So, I don't have a problem with having renters... You just never know what kind of folks will move in whether they rent or buy. I just liked these neighbors. The neighbors on the other side of us own and play loud music and have parties quite frequently so I would hate to have someone like them move in on my other side. Those same neighbors also got upset after a storm blew through and leaves from our trees ended up in their yard. It is just nice to have some neighbors that are pleasant to live around...

What if, what if, what if?
What if they are awesome neighbors? Think like that. Don't be all leery of them and watch them from afar when they get there. Go meet them right away and be friendly from the get go and start the new relationship.

Not all renters are bad & I get sick of all the assumptions. I have rented for several years & been just as quiet & respectful as my neighbors who own. Actually, my neighbors that own are about the most unfriendly people I have ever been in contact with. I think it just really comes down to whether or not the people are of good character, or not.

Edited - How do you know someone is a b*t** if she never comes out of her home & is quiet? And why would you believe hearsay about the new owner? I'd give her a chance before believing everything you hear.

maybe you could ask them for their contact information so that you can let them know of any problems??? I am sure that they would want to know if someone is not taking good care of their home....

Just keep in mind that renting is the new normal, so "renter's" aren't necessarily going to fit old stereotypes. We are renters and are in the top 10% of earners in America. We know many people like us who simply don't care to be in real estate at this time. And many others are hard working all american families who just lost thier homes and went through bankrupsy.

I understood what you meant. It isn't the "renter" you worry about, it's the next tennant. Whether they buy or rent makes no difference. It's their lifestyle and behavoir that you can never be sure of. I've lived here for 33 years and had mostly owners when we first moved in. Times changed and we saw homes rented out and now it's getting back to mostly owned. Everytime a home went vacant we worried about who might move in next. We had our share of drug dealers and loud music and partiers in a couple houses. It was almost better when it was a rental because we at least had the option to call the owner and complain then. Who do you call when the noisy people are actually the owners? We have called the pollice a few times but try to avoid that if possible. I have always liked the adventure of meeting the new neighbors and getting to know them. I like to show what a good neighbor I am and I'm sure they feel welcomed. So, take a deep breath T. and bake some cookies. When you see the trucks back into the driveway, go meet them and welcome them to your neighborhood. They are probably worried about who lives next door to them also!

have the SAME problem right now. The neighbors we share a back fence with are moving. They are not renting however. I'm praying that whoever moves in will be nice and quiet neighbors.

I hear ya! We've been in our current home for almost 6 years. In that time we've had 8 neighbors, and only 3 were even the slightest bit decent. I've pretty happy with the current one we have and hope she doesn't decide to move any time soon.

I am going through something similar. Our neighbors rent and are currently looking to buy a house. We are not "friends" per say, but our kids are the same ages and play together often. They are a nice, quiet family and I will miss them.

The way I'm thinking of it, most people who are buying a house have children, so odds are the new owners won't be an 18 year old college student/partier. I am not sure if the house will be rented again or sold, but we will wait and see. Thers nothing wrong with a little apprehension, but you can't control what neighbors you have, just what type of neighbor YOU are.

I couldn't agree more with you... NOT SAYING ANYTHING BAD ABOUT RENTERS because I was once one, BUT "some" don't have any appreciation for the neighborhoods they move into because it's not "their" home.... With the economy and foreclosures, I've noticed my really cute neighborhood is getting some "iffy" people in here :0(
