Does anyone out there know what to do about thrush?? My 5 month old son has a bad case of it in his mouth. Should i take him to the dr?
It is really seeming to bother him . thank you
i took him to the dr today, he is now taking the nystatin. thank you everyone for all of your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would suggest taking him 2 his pcp. Typically for thrush, they give nystatin. Hope it gets better.
Thrush is normal. It is bascialy yeast in the mouth,throat, and can be passed from mother's breast to baby or just from their immune system not able to get rid of it. I was getting steroid injections in my neck for months and it caused me to have thrush bad. I lost my voice, it is painfull to eat and swallow.

Hey! Yes I would take him to the doctor. My son had that when he was a baby. The doctor will give him some medicine to clear it up. His bottles and things will need to be sterilized. I hope this helps you.
YES take him to the pedi ASAP! My sisters baby had this around that age and it's very painful for the baby. The only way to clear it is with a medication but I'm not exactly sure what it's called since it's never actually happened to my kids.
Make sure to sterilize (boil) "everything" that's going in his mouth every day or he may continue to keep getting it. Call your pedi first thing in the morning before he gets worse. It took my sister a few days before realizing what it was and when she did realize it was thrush, her baby was constantly crying so I hope your little guy doesn't get to that point. Take care!
I had it once as a side-effect to a med I was taking and it was the worst pain.
I'd take him. And I would stop nursing, if you are, and pump to a bottle.
Yes,you should take him in for medication. I've heard about an over the counter you can purchase you can check with the pharmacy. But if its that bad he will need to see the doctor.
Take him to the pedi so you can get a prescription asap. They won't do anything invasive - just take a look at him. My daughter had the same thing at about that same age. You also need to watch out for a severe diaper rash that can be related. If you start to see that, treat it immediately also. Ask your pedi how to do that, but most likely they'll tell you to use Lotrimin AF on it under your regular diaper cream. You should also watch out for it transferring to your nipples if you are breastfeeding. Wash with soap every time you bf, and if you start to notice any symptoms, go to your doc immediately too, otherwise you'll pass it back and forth.
If it's not too bad, my pedi recommended us to use yogurt & yogurt drinks.
Yes you need to call the pedi in the morning. My daughter got it at 5 mo after some antibiotic and they prescribed her nyastatin (sp?). I didn't even need to take her to the office. Now I did not breast feed so I don't know if that is an issue. I wish you all the luck in the world. It seems to get worse before it gets better.
I think you should definitely take him to the dr. My god-daughter had that when she was a baby. The dr will give you some medicine to give him and it will clear it right up.
There are several treatments out there that have been mentioned... all good advice. I won't bother repeating the same info. I used gentian violet and it worked great, other than the mess. The only thing the doctor will prescribe is nystatin which is not as effective as it used to be. It worked at first, but the thrush came back with my baby.
I would just be sure to sterilize everything!~!!! If you are bottle feeding, replace all nipples, paci's, etc. If you pump, sterilize your pump parts after each use. You can go to kellymom website for tons of info on thrush. Good luck, seems once my little one got it, she was more prone to it. Lotrimin over the counter works great if she gets a yeast diaper rash, my daughter got one bad!!!

typically yes you would go to the doctor and they would give you something like swishandswallow. If the baby has been on antibiotics most difinately. You can also try getting some plain yogart and dip your finger in it and spread it over their tongue.
Thrush is a fungus, it needs a medicine called Nystatin to get rid of it. Its very simple to give them, just a dropperfull in their mouth like twice a day. DONT stop nursing, just apply a little of the same medicine to yourself (breast) before nursing and you will be fine.
Get to the dr. in the morning. He is hurting, and only a prescription cream (to my knowledge anyway) will cure this. Hopefully they can seem him soon..he must be so miserable:( ~A.~
My son had thrush as a baby and dropped weight he couldn't afford to lose plus having had thrush as an adult due to cancer treatment, I can tell you it is painful! Please take him to the doctor. There is medication available.

My daughter had this and it did not go away quickly. The doctor recommended gentian violet, which did not work and was horrible! I finally used the natural acidopholus that is kept refrigerated to keep the bacteria alive. I got it at whole foods. I just put it on my finger and let her lick it off. She loved it! I also had to boil my bras because I was breast feeding. It was a pain! Good luck!
Yes, you need to take him to the dr. Thrush is a fungal infection that can only be treated with prescription meds. It can be painful the worse it gets and you certainly don't want him to get to the point where he won't eat. Good luck.
there are a lot of lactation consultants out there that will help you as well. Mother love has a treatment for thrush that you can get at The Nestingplace or whole foods I believe. Gentian violet is a messy less effective approach and if you are nursing there is nothing on the government site that says your milk cannot be given so please do not pump and dump your milk.
It can be much easier with an herbal ointment. Thrush is an overgrowth of a natural condition in babies mouth which is why moms can end up with it on thier nipples. Dr Hale has a new study out that says more moms have staph infections than yeast however.
If you are bottle feeding please throw out all pacifiers or boil them daily. Most dishwashers can accomodate a good cleaning daily if you dry on the heat cycle.

has he been on any antibiotics lately, as sometimes that effects them, and even if he hasn't I would suggest a pharmecist at the drug store recommend something for him, as it won't go away by itself, and you may have to go to Dr. but you could check with a drug store (walgreens) etc. first

How do you know it is thrush for sure? I would take him to the doctor today.
Thrush is a fungus/yeast-type growth and it thrives on sugar. You didn't say whether you are nursing or not, or if he is being fed formula instead. If you are nursing, and you yourself consume sugary foods or liquids, you are "feeding" or recharging the yeast/fungus. I don't believe he will just "get over it."
I seem to remember that a doctor or clinic will prescribe a liquid called gentian violet, which you paint onto their throat with a swab several times a day, and after a few days, it kills out the yeast. But if sugar is involved at all, either in nursing or in formula, cutting out sugar yourself completely (or choosing a formula without sugar) should eventually 'starve' the fungus growth.
There are organic formulae at places that have a larger selection of organics, like Central Market or Whole Foods. (My daughter would use those even when she supplemented feeding for her nursing babies.)
I'd say, all in all, you should get him checked out. It's a fairly common problem and pretty easily treated.

We had a hard time with thrush when my daughter was a baby until the pharmacist recommended Gentian Violet. It worked great for us. Cleared it right up, but she did have a bright purple mouth for a while. That is not a big deal if it makes your baby feel better.

You don't absolutely need to go to the doctor. My baby once had thrush and I went to the doctor. There was a problem with my insurance though and they told me I would have to pay out of pocket for the visit. The doctor ended up sticking his head in the examination room and told me to just go buy GENTIAN VIOLET over the counter and didn't charge me anything. I tried it and it works! The only thing is that it will dye your baby's mouth a vibrant purple (and your nipples too if you are breastfeeding). But it's cheap and it works. Just use a cotton swab to apply it to the affected area a couple times a day.
Yes, he needs to get on some sort of medicine. My daughter had this as well when she was an infant. I know they gave her cream for her diaper area and I think she took some sort of oral medication.
Make plain yogurt his first non formula food - and up the yogurt before (and during) he takes antibiotics next time. The probiotics counteract the antibiotics total system wipeout - which keeps away the diarrhea, diaper rash, yeast infections, and thrush that are associated with antibiotics.
FWIW - yes, I know the last three are all yeast infections, but most people don't view them that way.

Are you breast feeding? If you are wash your breasts clean after each feeding and allow them to air out. I know but works great to keep things dry and free from yeast.

Yes, take him to the doctor. Thrush is very uncomfortable and makes their mouth sore. Is he currently on any antibiotics? Thrush is an overgrowth of yeast. I am a registered nurse, but please contact your pediatrician and make your little man comfortable.
