my 10 month old baby has had diarrhea since monday-5 days. vomitting included w/ fever on tuesday. so we took him to the dr since he broke out in a rash and they said he just has a stomach bug and it's normal to have a rash at the end of a fever. ok fine, but he still has diarrhea to the point that it woke him up 2x's last night. i just don't know what to do. i can't help but think that he's losing weight, main nutrients. can anyone offer some advise?!

What can I do next?

Take your drs advice. Replace fluids using pedialite (sp) or some other electrolyte replacement drink, you can use this instead of water. Use a barrier on his bottom to protect his skin from the diarrhea. One other note if it continues thru the weekend, go back to your doctor if it is still diarrhea, not loose stool, watery diarrhea.

this happened when my son was 3. we took him to the dr. and they said it was the flu things did not improve so he went to the er twice they said it was form the antobotic he had been on they gave him iv's twice as he was borderline dehydrated
i tryed everything that i have read other mothers advise i knew he still was not weel.
we went back to our peds and they put him in the hospital..it was rotovirus and he needed to be in the hosp for 3 1/2 days
follow your gut feeling and dont let the dr blow you off if need to be go to a childrens hosp er and explain whats going on
they can do blood work and check his fecal. be firm i wish i would have got in the drs face way sooner as i knew my son wasnt
getting better..
good luck,best wishes

Banana's stop you up, they help. And make sure your keeping him hydrated with pedilite. If he won't drink it, give him the popcicles. If you are very concerned I would give the doctor a call back, just leave a message asking what the next step should be. Let them know he is still having problems, and see what they say.
As for dehydration, he should be wetting his diaper just as much as he was before, if he's not then I too would be concerned for dehydration. I would say a wet diaper every 3-4 hours is expected.

My little boy had the same thing at about 14 months. He was dehydrated so we had him in the ER for IV fluids. My husband is a physician and had me monitoring how much he did of each. He kept getting more and more lethargic. I would have just kept doing what I was doing and my husband said he throws up one more time we are taking him to the ER. We called his Pediatrician and she admitted him to the ER. He had rotovirus. I am surprised your doctor isn't more concerned with the vomiting and diarrhea. How often is it happening? Every bowel movement and frequently or 2x a day? Is he still vomiting? Try to stay away from juice and sugary drinks. Those will only make it worse. My kids didn't drink the Pedialite either. I tasted it too. It's pretty gross. Can't say that I blame them. I know it is really tough on you and so disgusting. Hang in there. When my son had it my daughter was only 3 months old and I was nursing. It was a nightmare. One baby throwing up and diarrhea and the other baby refused a bottle. My husband was on call the worst day of it and we had just moved to the area not long before. On the third day I was sitting on the floor with him in my arms, a puddle of puke on the floor and the phone in my hand crying to my mom. I finally called one of our new neighbors and asked if she would come get the littlest baby for a while. What a life saver. That story didn't help you but at least you know I can empathize with you. :) Good luck. Hope the little guy is better soon.

If it continues, see if the doctor can give you a script for a stool sample. My daughter was doing this 2 months ago at the age of 16 months. It went on for 3 weeks! She did end up losing weight also. Basically they tested her stool for many things and she had blood tests done. I think it ended up being a bad virus because they didnt really find anything definate what was going on. Good luck!L.

The BRAT diet is used to treat diarrhea in children who eat solid foods. Diarrhea in children and babies has many causes, including illness, infection, and food sensitivity. Diarrhea may be caused or worsened by what the child eats or drinks. Changing the diet may help.

BRAT stands for:

Bananas
Rice (or other starchy food)
Applesauce
Toast
These foods are low in fiber. Other foods like this are crackers, cooked cereals, and pasta.

In addition to these foods, give babies and children lots of clear fluids for the first 24 to 72 hours. Give babies under 1 year of age Kao Lectrolyte or Pedialyte. For children older than 1 year, give water, diluted Kool-Aid or diluted Gatorade as the main fluids. Fluid is very important because it is easy for a child with diarrhea to become dehydrated. Dehydration is very serious in babies and young children.

As stools become more formed, your child can return to a normal diet. Slowly begin adding other types of food. Foods high in fiber such as raw fruits and vegetables, should be added last.

I understand your frustration right now, we're going through the same thing at my house. Have you tried giving your little one some yogurt? Try vanilla or strawberry (without the fruit). This may help a little bit. Other than that, all you can do is keep pushing fluids and keep his bottom coated with something like Aquafor to help keep the diaper rash under control.
