Is soy formula not good for infants? I have read a couple articles on it and I'm a little confused? Is there another formula that is not milk based that is affordable?
There are a lactose- free formulas out there. Is it the lactose or the milk that you want to avoid? I have also heard great things about goat's milk.
I would stay clear of soy formula. It is high in estrogen, which is a precurser to cancer.

The soy formula should be banned. Soy formula fed infants have up to 20,000x estrogen circulating in their bloodstream than infants not fed soy formula. Also loaded with dangerous toxins, especially dangerous levels of manganese and aluminum. Should be banned from market.

Soy is not a health food. There are some forms that are safe, like fermented soy. But, non-fermented soy should be avoided at all cost.
EDIT: I just saw the post about goat's milk. Goats' milk is the closest to human milk available. It is the best alternative to mama's milk available. I would recommend raw goat's milk. But, you have to add a couple of things to it to make it more complete for a human baby, like molassas for the iron. You can google it if you want more info. I think the weston-price website has good info (realmilk.com).
Soy can have extra estrogen that is not good for developing boys. But if the baby CANNOT use regular formula, than I suppose it is better than nothing. Not sure what other things are out there. I know some use goats milk, but I would think formula would have a lot better balance of what the baby needs.
I would ask your doctor. We used soy formula and now use soy milk per our doctor. It has been a total lifesaver for us.

True that other websites will say that these claims are false, but the way I see it, if there is an agruement about whether something's true or not, then there's probably SOME (if not ALL) truth to it. (vaccines, soy, etc).

Goat's milk is a good alternative. It is closest to mother's milk. Tonya is right on but I wouldn't add the molasses. Molasses can have the same dangers as honey the first year of life. (Like honey, there is sometimes no problem at all but if there is one, it can be deadly)
Almond milk has been used for centuries for women that can't nurse. You may want to look into that as well. Maybe your little one can have both....

If your child has trobule tolerting milk or has a milk allergy it is 80% likely to be allergic/intolernt to soy as well. There are also articles on soy giving too much estrogen in babies. I cnt find them right now but I am sure you can google later. We tried Nutramagin and my twins still had blood in their stools. We were switched to Neocate however that was $40 a small can and you use 1 scoop per ounce not 1 scoup per 2 oz of water. I would get alliementum or nutramagin with coupons you can get on line or calling the company. Also we bought them off of ebay for 1/2 the price. Many people had left overs they couldnt sell back to the strore and wanted something for the cans instead of just loosing it all. THat was our best bet and saved us tons of money. Hope this help.

I've heard some very bad things about soy too, so I won't even use it, just to be safe.. My foster daughter was 3 weeks old when she came to me & was allergic to every formula we tried, even lactose free. Put her on raw/whole organic Goats milk, did wonders!! I bought it cold but after 6 months learned you could buy it powdered & make your own, but then it wouldn't make it raw, but my friends bought a goat by then & fed it organic feed & let us milk it & then Ijust gave it to her fresh. LoL But organic goats milk period, (raw/whole or not) should do the trick if he's allergic to the formula.. Just my suggestion. :)
Our baby was allergic to Soy and milk, and we used the Nutramigen, but it was expensive.
Lucky she out grow many of her allergies around age 2.
