Spitting Up - New Boston, NH

My grandbaby had that problem, and they found the baby was alergic to the formula and put her on a soy formula and that seem to do the trick.

Hi I'm L., I have a 10mo old and he spit up a ton when he was a infant. I was a bit worried and found it a bit annoying but also his doctor was not concerned and that the closing on the esophagas is not strong enough to keep the food down and that in time it will get stronger and goes away and it has for the most part although he still will spit up, try giving the baby a little less food and see how that goes if she's able to keep it down better.

My daughter had a very similar problem. She gained weight and was happy but spit up all the time and I just what you mean about the volcano I would actually have to take a shower! Once the Dr. started her on medication for reflux it got better, we had teh prescrilption filled at a compoding pharmacy where the alcohol was not put in and the flavor was cherry not mint. My son did the same thing. My doctor told me that it was nothing to worry about as well. Some babies are just pukers! Lucky us, huh? It will go away when she can sit up by herself. Now my son only does it when he is REALLY upset! Just bring a lot of change of clothes and burp cloths whereever you go!

This same thing happened to my daughter at about 5 weeks. She was getting too much milk, and spitting up the whole feeding, resulting in her being hungry again and replaying the entire event. I cut 5 minutes off her nursing time from each breast and she was totally fine! It's very common with nursing babies because they are so happy to be on the breast they want to stay a little too long. Hope this works for you!

My daughter was only a few weeks old when she started doing that several times. I don't know if it was the same thing as what your experiencing but it would just keep coming...like a volcano. My husband and I were holding her at those times and we would get soaked down to our underwear! I don't know how she could fit that much in her stomach. I spoke to our Dr. about it and he said that she would just eat too much...which, with the amount that came out of her I could believe that. He used a term for it but I can't remember it. We also had a problem with her burping, which I'm sure was a contributor. Once she was strong enough so I could sit her up on my lap with support she started to burp more and it hasn't happened at all. Hope this helps to ease you a little.

It sounds like it may be acid reflux. My son started spitting up at that age too. He is now 7 months old and he takes Prilosec everyday. If she continues to spit up a lot like that I would again let the pediatrician know. Ours wasn't worried initially either because Jon gained a good amount of weight (and still is). But i felt so bad for him spitting up all of the time! Finally at his 6 months appt. he was spitting up everywhere in the doctors office and the doctor said "oh yeah thats acid reflux". So good luck. I hope it's not reflux and just typical spit up!!

my 1st daughter did the same thing when she was very small, it happened a few times and i eventually realized it was after i ate spaghetti! The acidity of the sauce was apparently too much for her tummy. I avoided it for a while and she seemed to adjust to it over time. Keep a journal of what you eat for a while and keep track of the "volcano"! You might find a connection and can wean out certain foods until her new tummy can get used to them. Good luck!

Are you breastfeeding? When my son was little, he would over feed (I was the human pacifier)- and he would have some serious Exorcist style pukes. If that's not the case, I would insist her pediatrician check into it further, just for peace of mind. Good luck!

Buy a lot of spit-up towels and make sure anyone that holds her is wearing one.

My daughter spit up all the time and everywhere. Nothing to be medically worried about, though. Some babies spit up a lot and some don't. She was colicky and had trouble pooping sometimes, but other than that was a healthy baby.

Honestly, I had a puker and it was particularly bad when he had even a bit of congestion. If she might have a bit of a cold, then I would reccomend just making sure she is propped up after eating rather than laying flat. Otherwise as long as she is gaining weight I wouldn't worry to much.

Hi R.- Maybe burping her more in between feedings? Also, have you tried having her sleep in her car seat? Maybe sitting up a little would help her. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work!--N.

My daughter, Lily, is almost 7 months old now and used to be a volcano too. She was always wearing a bib and usually went through at least 3 or 4 burp cloths a day. Sometimes I thought she was overeating so I would try to keep her feedings to 10 minutes per side. Unfortunately with exclusive breastfeeding, which I'm still doing, it's hard to monitor how many ounces she got or spit up. My doctor said that as long as she was gaining weight and "was a happy spitter", then all was fine. It was certainly annoying and caused me to worry alot but it peaked around 4 months old and is now very occasional. I'm sorry that I don't have more advice, but I wanted you to know that I know what you are going through. In time it will pass so try not to worry too much about your "happy spitter".

I have 2 boys (2 1/2 and 4 months) and both have reflux. Which is what it sounds like your daughter has. Ask your doctor about treatment. My boys are on zantac twice a day and it works wonders. My first pediatrician didn't seem too concerned either but I knew something was wrong and so I took my son to childrens hospital and they were the ones who treated him. I no longer go to that pediatrician. Good luck.

From day 1, my daughter was a spitter too. I was exactly the same way - solely breastfeeding no bottles at all. I was worried just like you but the Dr advised me not to be, she was gaining weight and all was fine. She was right. 23 months later DD is extremely healthy and a great eater - and because of the breastfeeding healthy as can be. So don't lose faith - there is light at the end of the tunnel - until then - invest in a lot of bibs.

only because i have a 6 wks old grandson ,and just found out he has it.it runs in the family..just a thought...

Hi! Wow, your dr isnt concerned? Is the spitting up only night time? My older daughter did this & was on medicine for reflux. Which in time( a month or 2) got better. Try sitting her up longer after she eats. Dont let her lay down at least an hour. Sit her up in her carseat even. I used the carseat alot, resting it in our rocking chair. Of course if you dont agree with medicine i've found that chiropractors can help babies with many things like colic or reflux. Just being born is trauma for their little bodies. Also something to try, is Dr Browns bottles. That's all we ever used, they make a big difference!

Both my daughters did that. I am surprised that the doctor didnt recommend a different formula. I used Enfamil til this happened then I switched to Prosobee *spelling?*. She may be gaining weight but no one needs to worry about that while eating. Good luck. C.

It can cuse her to not want to eat if it is acid reflux as she will then associate eating with the pain afterwards.

I guess I was lucky and had virtually no spit up..Have you asked if it could be due to something that you are eating thats maybe causing acid? Just a thought...

As long as she's not uncomfortable and that she IS gaining weight, it's more of a nuisance than a problem. For some reason more and more babies are having reflux but normally outgrow it by 8 months to 1 year. We went through it until the day our daughter turned 6 months. It was gross, we did a lot of laundry and used a lot of burp clothes but it never bothered her. Her doctor recommend that we let her outgrow it and sure enough, she did! Good luck!

Oh Honey do I understand that one! Both of my boy's had projectile spit up issues. Many family and friends had clothes, hair, couches and carpets to clean after feeding or holding one of my kid's. I often wondered where it all comes from because their belly was so small! One thing I found to work best, although a bit more time consuming, was to feed the babies smaller amounts but more frequently to give their belly "settle time" with burps in between the feedings. I would do a few ounces, burp and wait a few minutes and continue till the bottle was finished. I did the same with breast feeding, just keep an extra burp cloth diaper handy for milk spray. Also, I purchased a side sleeper wedge to position the babies on their side to sleep so they did'nt choke on spit up. They outgrew the spitting up after about 4 mos. or so, usually soon after they started cereal. It is gross, smelly and makes for lots of laundry but it will get better! If the baby begins excessive fussiness or loses a good amount of weight, bring her to the pediatrician, otherwise she should be fine.

It's kind of like projectile vomit....my husband had it when he was a baby and one of my 3 had it. It looks more than it is....ovbiously, otherwise your daughter wouldn't be gaining....one of my little ones also had acid reflux....and I nursed all three...watch what you eat and don't lay the baby down flat....sometimes I would put the baby in her infant seat to sleep because she would be sitting up some and that worked....she out grew it...sometimes she would go for weeks without that spit up and as soon as she did again I would put her in her infant seat right next to my bed....didn't want her to get use to sleeping in my bed...

it may be that your daughter is eating a little too much i'm not sure weather yout bottle or breastfeeding but my daughter would over eat just beacuse seh wanted to suck so we ended up having to use a binki

My daughter is 13 weeks and still has those spit up moments. I find that if I keep her feedings very calm she does much better. And if I feed her before she really gets hungry that helps too.

reflux, both my kids had it.. keep her upright for 1/2 hr after her feedings.. burp her alot.. keep a towel handy for all feedings! once they sit up on their own, they usually out grow it. it's just messy for a while.. ask your ped about adding mylicon or something similar to her bottles.. that may help with reducing gas.. and check the type of bottle you use (if you are bottle feeding anyway!) see if its the type that helps reduce the amt of air in it.. Playtex collapsible and the Dr Brown's I think are good ones. good luck..

My daughter had the same problem when she was first born. Does she do the same thing if you lay her down to change her after she eats? Mine did, she would also SCREAM whenever we put her in her bed but was fine in the swing, car seat etc. When I spoke to her doctor, he said that it was acid reflux and to elevate the head of her crib by putting some blankets or a pillow underneath the mattress. The doctor also prescribed some Zantac (which she hated). She's since outgrown it, and is fine. (She's 9 1/2 months now)

my daughter is a happy spitter too. i exclusively breastfeed. she is a really fast drinker and takes in way too much air. the doctor was not concerned as she is gaining weight, and just instructed us to take burping breaks and know that she will have the forceful spitting from time to time until she starts in solids.

Try letting her sleep on a slight incline, that can help with reflux - and make sure she's well burped before lying down.

Hi,R..The baby is still really small.In small infants the gag reflex is very sensitive and the breast milk may just be sitting on top of an air bubble inside the babys stomache causing every drop of milk to fly out like a faucet.No need to worry your baby is absolutely fine.Good luck!!!

sometimes little ones over eat and they then are sick with the over flow. Another thing is wind/gas the baby may be goulping milk and have a pocket of wind.
Try feeding 20 mls then burping and having a rest then another 20mls and so on my son used to be like this.
Sounds though with all the spitting up your baby is still gaining weight. Good luck

Hi R., make sure she is more upright when you are feeding her at night, try to get a good burp out of her before you lay her flat, and give her a little extra time vertically before she lays down. My son projectile vomited a few times and it usually had something to do with the position in which we fed him. Give these a try and if it isn't better in a day or two I would call the dr and tell them you want her to be evaluated. Instinct is huge in caring for our children, don't let the dr tell you she is fine until they actually see her and check her out! Good luck.

Just a couple things to think about as I am only a mom and not a doctor. Is your baby getting formula? WE gave my son one bottle of formula a night and in when we started he would projectile the formula right back up. Our doctor told us to try soy formula and as soon as we did he spit up like any other normal baby.

Your story is very similar to mine. My son spit up more times a day then I could count. He was too 5lbs 12 oz at birth and doubled his weight in a month. So he gained wait very well. I breastfeed him exclusively also but he still continued to spit up all day, every day. I mentioned it to his doctor and he wasn't concerned about it and told me most babies stop the spitting up at around a year of age. Well by golly he was right on. I think it was just around a year old it all of a sudden stopped and he hasnt done it since.
I wouldn't worry about it. As long as she is gaining weight like she should and it doesn't seem to bother her (although it bothers us mothers) Just dont wear any expensive clothing for a while..lol.

she might have a lactaid problem, or she might have acid reflux... that happened to my little boy.. we ended up switching his formula and it helped his acid reflux tremendously

my second son spit up alotand was gaining weight. His doctor was not concerned. but after a few weeks I went right to a GI specialist, the doctoe was at mass general. I figured he had acid reflux and he did but he also has a an issue where his stomach didnt empty fast enough. He was put on meds for a while until he out grew it. If you have any concernes my advice is go straight to a specialist.

Yes I had hat problem with my little munchkin and I put a tiny amount of cereal in her bottle to hold it down..I would ask your doctor if that would work for you...

I have four children and my two oldest spit up so much people didn't want to hold them in fear of being spit up on. My oldest (my daughter) was switched to a soy formula and did great. My oldest son was put on zantac and soy and that combo seemed to work for him. He was later diagnosed with a more serious condition but it is not very common. My advice is to start by giving more frequent smaller feedings. I would also talk to you doctors about a soy alternative. I am sure it is just a immature muscle. But stay on top of it. My son didn't get his final diagnosis until he was 6. We had trouble for all of those years and if I hadn't been so on top of the doctors that something was wrong who knows how long he would have gone like this. He has since been treated for his condition and is doing well.

Well, my son was bottle fed, but he spit up, after every single feeding for the entire first year of his life. It wasn't until he started whole milk at age 1 that he stopped. Nothing really helped, it's just something that happened. As your doctor said, and as mine told me, as long as he was gaining weight, not to be concerned about it. My only suggestion to you would be to keep a bib on her as often as possible unless you want to change her clothes all day long.
