Splotchy Skin on My 16 Month Old's Joints

My 16 month old daughter has developed white splotches around her elbows and knees. She's had them for about 2 months. She has eczema (on her feet tops, back of one knee and on one wrist and hand), but has pretty much outgrown it. I've been using Aveeno overnight lotion for about 4 months. I don't use hydrocortisone cream.

What can I do next?

Same thing happened to my daughter, she also had eczema and around that age when she was exposed to the sun she got her first white splotches, even though her eczema is almost all gone. She is now 3 and a few times she got a lot of sun and I think i forgot to apply the sun block and she got some more. Let me know what works or what causes it

Also I just read someone's response in which they mentioned a skin condition that causes depigmination. I read something about this too and took my daughter to the dermatologist and asked them to look at her skin under a special light that shows if it is permanant depigmination, there were no signs of it being permanant but they didn't have an answer for me. The spots are not where she had ezcema spots. I am hoping it will just clear up on it's own eventually

There was a period of time when my youngest had white splotchy dry spots on his back. Our pediatrician recommended that we buy Aquaphor and apply it every night before bed. That completely cleared up the problem for us. Good luck! =0)

What does her doctor say? Surely, if she's had it for two months, you've checked with her doctor???

Dear P.,
I looked up the closest thing to what you said you were using on your baby and it has a moderate rating of 3 on the Environmental Working Group website. I've copied and pasted some of the information about it here and when you read all the risks involved with those ingredients, you might want to stop using that cream! I have posted information about the www.ewg.org/skindeep safe cosmetics database many times on Mamasource and told everyone I know that it's so easy to be fooled by the advertising and "safe sounding" names on product labels that are intended to fool you into using them. You don't use the hydrocortizone cream but did you ever think that some over the counter options could be even worse? I also have a business that could help you, but Mamasouce guidelines don't allow me to give you information about it. ;-) I hope this helps you out in your future purchases. Feel free to send me your email address and I will share further information with you. God Bless!

it could be birth marks or it could be an allergy to the sun. Really have no idea but a friend, who is an adult, has just started getting those splotches as well and the Derm told her it was an allergy to the sun....not sure...just a thought.

My younger sister has vitiligo, a skin condition that causes depigmination in the skin, hers started out around her ankles and her elbows. In vitiligo the white patches are not dry, and look like reverse birthmarks. If the sounds like it, then you might want to address this issue with her pediatrician.

I'm no expert, but my husband has Psoriasis(Plaque Psoriasis) and his spots show up on the joint areas first. Check it out on-line, but I would definatley have it confirmed with the Doctor, especially sincie she has had eczema previously.

my daughter had some weird skin things this summer too. I feel it was due to the pet urine from previous renters in our home and then the harsh toxic chemicals a carpet cleaning company used. Just curious have you had your carpets cleaned lately? Since our little ones are on the carpets rolling around alot I'm very careful what I clean with. From laundry detergent to dishwashing soup, to all my cleaning supplies. Also could it be anything new she has eaten?
