Stomach Banding

I'm thinking about having stomach banding done, but I'm worried about the risks. Does anyone know what real (not just the ones that the dr tells you) are? Have you or someone you know had the banding and how has it worked? I have tried for the last 3 months or so to loose weight again after several failed attempts. I've only been able to loose abt 10 lbs and keep it off. I can go as low at 15 lbs, but then the 5 lbs comes back again (very frustrating). :( Does anyone have any recommendation for a weight loss dr or who to stay away from? Thanks for any advice.

I had the banding done myself several years ago. While it is very difficult at first, I believe it was well worth it. I worked in surgery whenever I was looking into this venture and watched countless surgeries and asked the doctors about all of the patients he had done. While there are risks, you also have to look at all the benifits. Just remember, there is no cutting of the stomach like the bypass does. While I'm not sure of your particular situation, another thing I loved about the band is that with my last pregnancy I was able to go to the Dr. and have all of the fluid removed so I could eat all I needed to for my baby. Now, I have finally had him and I just need to make an appointment and we will start filling my band all over again. Best of luck on your decision. I hope I have been helpful.

okay my mother just had the gastric bypass, wich is not the same, but on the same basic principal. they band your stomach and then you loose some, and they go in and tighten the band and you loose some more. i'm overweight, like everyone else in the world is......lol.....i talked to her doctor about banding because i was scared of the gastric bypass, he advised me that it should be a last resort, it is a fairly new procedure and a lot of things can go wrong, not saying they will, but they CAN. as with any procedure of course. he said any good doctor will put you on a diet and if you smoke they will make you stop smoking before going through this procedure. you will be on a very strict diet for a little over a year, and if you can stay on it for a year and do exactly what the doctor suggests then you may qualify for the procedure. you have to loose a certin amount of weight so they know you are serious about this, and not being lazy to loose weight fast. the diet is very strict, but it works so well............if you do decide to go to a doctor and takl to him about it, and he says okay lets do it, i would be very scared, because i'd want a doctor like my mothers, worried about my health and my state of mind before doing elective surgery on me. i'd want to take it slow and know everything there is to know about it.

thats all i have for advice for you. just be careful. and three months is nothing at all........i have lost over 100 pounds just walking over the last two years.............and none of the weight has come back. thats 50 punds a year....its not a fast process.......... the faster you loose weight, at the end of your dieting process you will gain it back with more punds to add..........so do your research before you do anything drastic to your body.

April is her name and she has a degree in Heatlth and Wellness and is a Licensed and Certified Trainer.. she moved to NY last year but has a Tulsa, OK phone number for her clients here in the Tulsa area.. she is a very great motivator and has TONS of knowledge in the field.. hope this helps.. good luck with your journey!!

Hi M.!
I too have had many problems in the weight area. I have lost and gained and lost and gained and each time I gain it is more than where I was at prior to losing. FRUSTRATING!!! I have not checked into either type of surgery, but I did go through two doctors while losing weight. One was Dr. Daniels which is out of Barnes, and he is fine. I stopped seeing him because of the distance. The other was Dr. Cunningham and you should stay away from him. He puts people on thyroid medicine unnecessarily (which can damage organs) and, although I was diagnosed with Insulin Resistance, he insisted that I pay cash for the visits and stated he could not submit to my insurance for payment. There are a few things that are just not right concerning him and his practice. Watch what you eat, when you eat (I do not let myself eat after dinner any longer and I try to eat as few carbs as possible after 2:00 or so), and be as active as possible. Regarding the surgery(s), I work with someone who had the gastric bypass done and she has gained the majority of the weight back. There are many, many variables. Take care and good luck!!

Check with your Dr. Have them check your thyroid if your having problems losing weight and keeping it off,it could be the problem. or diebetes
When I was pregnant with my son, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, its the one where you have a hard time losing weight and keeping it off. surgery should be the last resort.

Before I would consider surgery, I would try Weight Watchers, or any other group that offers support. It has worked for me.. in the my past. I need to "get back up on the horse"! WW is a great plan, I resumed old habits after my son was born...almost 5 yrs. ago!
Whatever you decide, research all options. Good Luck!
P.S. I know the formula to weight loss. Eat less (Healthy of course!) and move more! Doing it is a choice for all of us!:)

Weight Watchers is a great group, I used them about a year ago and lost 40lbs. Didn't stick with it and am back up to where I was before WW, so I do sympathize with you. Don't know much about the stomach banding although I have been considering it myself.
