Strange Menstrual Cycle

My hubby and I have been trying for our second child for a few months, with no luck. I was supposed to start on Thursday. Nothing. Then Friday afternoon I had some very light spotting. I assumed this was the start of my period. Today is Sunday, and my period has not really "started". Usually by the second day of my period, I have a pretty heavy flow, but now 3 days of extremely light spotting here and there, its like Im not even having a period. I took a pregnancy test yesterday and today and they were both negative. If Im not pregnant, what could be causing this abnormal cycle? Ive never experienced anything like this before. Any input is appreciated!

I am 27 y/o and today is my 4th day of no period. I did not bleed or even spot a single time during the night. I took an early pregnancy EPT test first thing this morning and it was yet again negative. But my boobs are so extremely sore today and I remember them being sore like this when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I have no clue whats going on. A positive pregnancy test would explain so much. I guess I will just wait and see what happens and If I have not started in a few more days, I will call my doctor. Thanks for the advice!

What can I do next?

I experienced this same thing about a dozen times. I think it was early pregnancy loss. My period would eventually start a week late. For me the solution was taking a 81 mg baby aspirin every 12 hours and doing this everyday through my pregnancies until a few weeks before delivery.

Inflammation in my body was preventing good implantation. The aspirin reduced the inflammation and allowed me to stay pregnant. Once my embryo started to develop, the aspirin kept the blood flow healthy.

I have celiac's disease and a blood clotting problem. You might consider looking up Celiac's disease and seeing if it fits your other symptoms. It often sets in after your first baby and causes secondary infertility unless it's reversed by diet. Aspirin is great treatment for both. I have two great kids now.

It may be that you are having implantation bleeding, and it's just too early for the pregnancy tests to come back positive. That is what I am hoping for you! It may also be your hormones being out of whack. In either case improving your diet will benefit you and baby to be. Avoid junk food, empty calories, genetically altered foods, and foods an drinks stored in plastic containers. Pile on that fresh garden produce and high quality proteins.
Of course, I'm not a doctor, so I'm not trying to diagnose you, just a midwife trying to point you in the right direction.

It is fairly common to have light bleeding either at implantation or when you're supposed to start your period, and you're actually pregnant. It's also possible that you're having a very early miscarriage (typically due to some genetic incapability with life with an embryo), and this is the beginning of it, which is why your tests are registering negative. HOWEVER, when I was pregnant with my first son, I took four pregnancy tests in the first week and they were all negative -- it took A WHOLE WEEK before the test came back positive.

When you take a pregnancy test, it measures the amount of HCG in your urine, so a lot of things can make the test show negative when you're actually pregnant. If you drink a lot of water, your urine will be much more diluted than if you drink sparingly. Most tests will say to take them using the first urine of the morning, because you will likely have been asleep for several hours so will have much more concentrated urine. But, if you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and/or drink more water, your urine will be more diluted than typical. You may just have implanted late or your hormone levels haven't increased as quite typical, so that may also be why the test is negative. Give it another week (or hold off 3 more days at least) and you'll probably either start your period for real, or the pregnancy test will come back positive.

Another possibility is for you to try one of the "early" pregnancy tests, because these are sensitive to much smaller amounts of HCG, so will show a positive even if you don't have enough HCG to trigger a positive in a regular pregnancy test. But these tests are more expensive, I think.

Keep doing what you've been doing but I had the same thing happen to me and I'm now 5 mos. pregnant with my second child. I was off the pill and having strange periods but still "trying". I wasn't temping but I did use a calendar and knew our timing was good. Went to the dr. to find out why I wasn't getting pregnant. He suggested using OPK. Used the OPK waited and tested for pregnancy. I had pregnancy symptoms at this point and knew it would be pos. and it was yay! Go to the dr. I was almost 11 weeks. Go figure. I don't know how to resolve this as my dr didnt even pick up on me being pregnant. I do know that you could be having a period, neg. pregnancy tests and still be pregnant. Be patient and call your dr if you have any pregnancy symptoms. Otherwise just go about your business and try next month. Good luck!

How old are you? I'm 37 and since I've turned 35 my period has just changed....and according to the doctor that is just normal. Although mine has gotten heavier.

I would make an appt. and talk to the doctor to get more information though.

S., it is not at all uncommon for preganancy tests to register a false negative in the first month of pregnancy (first couple of weeks after you miss a period). Your body is going haywire trying to adjust to the new requirements. Even your doctor will not do a pregnancy test until after you have missed your second period. The body commonly registers a negative on pregnancy tests in the first couple of weeks. Wait at least two more weeks, then try again. If it registers positive ... congratulations! Call your GYN and schedule an appointment! If, however, it still registers negative ... call your GYN and schedule an appointment. Good luck.
