hi,
doc took blood tests and found i had low thyroid but he said it wasn't too bad but he referred me to the endocrinology for a 2nd opinion. well had things going plus it took awhile for the referal to go through my insurance and finally got it approved last week and saw the endocrinology last thursday. that morning before the appointment i was 1 week late in my period so i took 2 home pregnancy tests and came out positive. went to the appointment w/ the endocrinology in the afternoon and looked over my lab results from my doc and said my low thyroid wasn't too bad and i don't need to worry. i told him that i just found out i'm pregnant and he still was reassuring me that it shouldn't be too bad but ordered me another blood tests just to be sure. results don't come till later this week. it is now tuesday and i'm worrying myself over internet search. stuff i read online is scaring the heck outta me. i know endo said my low thyroid isn't bad and that i may not even need to take meds but it says online that i should since i'm pregnant. last period was january 26th. and it's already march so worried that my baby might be getting affected since i read online that it's important you take meds first few weeks of pregnancy. do i need to worry or trust my endo? also i haven't seen an OBGYN yet since i JUST found out i was pregnant. i called for an appointment and they wont be able to see me till monday. so i haven't had any blood tests confirming i'm pregnant and only took 2 home pregnancy that both came out positive. i googled to make sure that low thyroid wont give you false positive and i haven't found that at all so i'm pretty sure i'm pregnant. thoughts and anyone who had similar experience please? also sorry if i'm so vague...to be honest i don't remember my thyroid numbers and don't understand it yet. thanks in advance for any opinions and responses.

My family has a history of jacked up thyroids. With my 1st pregnancy my levels were borderline low and my doctor at the time said we could just watch it. We did, it was fine, baby was fine, no problems at all. I'm now pg with #2 baby and my new ob/gyn saw my levels and sent me to an endocrinologist (probably in my 2nd month of pregnancy) who put me on synthroid. I must say I think it has helped me not gain as much weight and I probably feel better from being on it. I will also have to continue taking it the rest of my life, which is fine. I don't know anything about having to be on it the first week for the baby's sake but I wasn't and neither of my children seem to be effected by that (although I haven't delivered yet, I don't expect any complications according to sono's etc.). I think it will be just fine for you, either way.
P.S. My endocrinologist firmly believes pregnant women need good thyroid levels but didn't seem too concerned that it was 2 months into my pregnancy that I got on medications. I hope that helps calm your fears. The internet can be a scary place!

Trust your endocrinologist - they are the experts on Thyroid.

And, if it's marginally low, I can't imagine that is a huge concern (believe me, they would act immediately upon it knowing that you are pregnant). There are likely more side effects from being on the medication than not. Synthroid is the most common Thyroid medication on the market though others are available. I'd recommend looking both medications up on a reputable site such as MayoClinic.com or WebMD.

You may also want to call your OB/GYN ahead of an appointment to see if they have any thoughts or concerns.

Thanks,
D.

My cousin has low thyroid and takes meds (when not pregnant) and has had two pregnancies (taking meds both times). They monitored her more frequently during pregnancy to make sure the dosages were accurate. During her second pregnancy, they had a little more difficulty getting the dosage right and her son was a bit larger than most (9lbs) which I was told is a side effect of not getting the meds exactly right. Other than that, she and babies have all been fine.

PS- Stop checking the internet...it will scare the hell out of you!! :-)

Congrats!!!

Don't worry too much about it. my first I had to finally go on medicine mid pregnancy, and my other two I did fine with just testing the lines on my levels. It's when you are way low that it can be a problem. Just make sure they keep an eye on it as your pregnancy goes. Check about ever 2-3 months. Congrats on the pregnancy.

Just make sure your levels are checked regularly throughout your pregnancy, and you take any med's to correct your levels. Trust your endocrinologist, they know what they are doing.

I had my thyroid mostly removed prior to my pregnancies, but had 3 very normal, healthy pregancies and babies.

Your levels usually change during your pregnancy and your endocrinologist will be able to make any adjustments your body needs.

Try not to worry too much, as that is not good for you or your new baby.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!
J.
