Table Foods for a 9 Month Old

Hi Moms,

My son is 9 months old, and only has his front 6 teeth (4 top, 2 bottom). At his well child appointment, my pediatrician told me I need to start him on more table foods, and get away from baby foods. He does well with bananas, green beans, yogurt, ground meats, and mashed potatoes (white and sweet), but I feel as if he's getting bored with the same foods over and over again. Does anyone have any suggestions for easy to eat foods? TIA!

What can I do next?

I got a lot of great ideas from this website:

Lots of recipe ideas and guidelines for piece of mind. I have been trying these on my baby for a few days and she is crazy about the stuff I have been giving her.

We gave our son hot dogs (the extra fat in them is needed for proper brain development). We started off by slicing them into 1/2-inch thick (give or take) slices, and then cut each piece into 4 pieces, so there is NO possibility of choking on them. You can do the same with grapes ~ just cut them into 1/4's, and make sure he's only getting one piece at a time. yes, it slows down meal time, but safety is the major factor here. Corn does not digest, so it will come out in his diapers, but go ahead and start letting him eat some of that, as well. Your son can also start eating mac 'n cheese, too. Cottage cheese is great, too! Our son is 2 1/2 now, and he wouldn't go to bed tonight until he had eaten some of MY dinner, even though he had eaten his, already. (Dad made him some mac 'n cheese with a hot dog cut up into it, and I was eating a pasta salad!) We also make up a lot of oatmeal at our house. We sweeten our son's with applesauce, usually (100%, without the added sugar) or cut up bananas. Plums and orange slices are great, too. Basically, if you and your husband like it, your son can probably eat it, too, with the exceptions of peanut butter and eggs (allergy issues). Some other foods our son LOVES are peas, squash, spaghetti (he's spoiled to Dad's, hates the canned stuff), peaches, pineapple chunks, peeled apples. Use your imagination!

Even though your son only has 6 teeth right now, those other teeth will be coming in pretty fast now. As long as the foods are fairly soft, it should not be a problem for him to eat. The other key I can give you is if someone in your family has an allergy to a specific food, I would delay introducing that food to your son. My sister is allergic to peanuts (but not to the extent of having an epi pen if she touches them), so we are delaying introducing our son to PB&J sandwiches until he is at least 4 years old.

(Sorry this got "convoluted"...been having severe back pain all day, and my concentration is "off" big time!)

You can email me if you have any questions about specific foods, or call me anytime! My # is ###-###-####, and my email is ____@____.com fuzzies!

Hey! My (just turned) 9 month old REFUSES baby foods and LOVES big people foods! We've recently discovered that he LOVES grapes (I cut them into 6ths usually) and I made a stew and he adores all the veggies and such! Stewed tomatoes, cooked carrots, diced potatoes, green beans, peas, corn, cooked red and green peppers, onions, black beans, pinto beans, ground turkey, ground beef, small chunks of diced ham or chicken or turkey, small pieces of cheese, cut up raisins, crackers, cheerios, etc are all favorites! You could also try yogurt and cottage cheese as well!
My son also likes cooked (but cool) apples and pears - which are SO easy to soften in the microwave and then refrigerate briefly to cool. Bananas and avacados and sweet potatoes are very simple too!

Good luck and have fun exploring!

Oh and just wanted to add that my son eats all of that and he only has 1 bottom tooth! :)

You can give him spaghetti, ravoli. My daughter was buying those little containers that you just microwave and my granddaughter loved them. All i know is that they are in a little red container, and they have a lot of choices. If you don't get your baby started with textured food, then you are going to have a hard time to get him to eat it later on. I know a child that is 1 and 1/2 years old, and is still on baby food, because he mom didn't start trying him on table food, till he was 1 years old.

My daughter LOVED scrambled eggs, mashed avacado, steamed zuccini, homemade applesauce...etc.
I found an AWESOME book called "super foods" by Annabell Karmel. Its basically a babyfood and toddler cookbook. Lots of good stuff and all the recipes devided into age groups, and appropriate for their developement at the time. I highly recommend it!!
