Taking Aspirin While Pregnant

I've been diagnosed with Protein C deficiency, which puts me at risk for developing blood clots. While pregnant, it's been recommended that I take a baby aspirin a day. There is limited data on whether or not aspirin is safe to take during pregnancy, so I'm very worried about what it can do to my baby. Has anyone been on aspirin while pregnant? Did you have any pregnancy complications? Did you deliver a healthy baby? Was your baby full term? Have there been any possible long term effects on your baby...even little things, like needing eyeglasses at a young age, having psychosocial problems like ADHD, etc?
Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

What can I do next?

Since you have a clotting problem (possibility of clotting too much), and since aspirin does thin the blood (makes clotting harder) - it makes sense to me. They'll probably tell you to back off on it when you are closer to delivery time (you don't want to bleed too much, then). Clotting too much can be a real problem at the placenta level and you do NOT want to let clots interfere with blood supplying nutrition to the baby. If there's another way to address the protein C deficiency, you'll reduce the need to take the aspirin.

the reason they dont like pregnant women to take asprin or ib propheh is because they thin the blood. it is especially hazardous in the last trimester when it could cause heavy bleeding during delivery. it is a safety precaution more for mom than baby, so if you need to take it do so.

Yes, because I was at high risk for developing preeclamsia again, with my third pregnancy, I took an aspirin each day. The preeclamsia did not rear its ugly head and I have a very healthy, beautiful red-headed 14 month old daughter. She is clearly very bright (has a good vocabulary for her age) and has great fine and gross motor skills. She was born at 38 weeks only because I made the doctor take her then. (see next paragraph)

My middle son (with whom I had HELLP syndrome with, a severe form of preeclamsia) was born by emergency c-section at 37 weeks. The onset of this problem happened very quickly and it was extremely dangerous for both me and the baby. Out of the three babies I have had, he is the only one that needs glasses, speech therapy and OT for motor control issues. Is this because of the preelamsia? Who knows?

What I do know is that I did everything I could (which included taking a baby aspirin a day) to prevent an emergency situation again.

If your doctor says that this will help your condition, I would take it. Developing blood clots is a life threatening condition and I would not play around with it.

Good luck and congratulations of being pregnant. I hope you have a complication-free pregnancy!

My doctor had put me on baby aspirin to prevent miscarriage due to recurrent miscarriages. I took one baby aspirin a day until 38 weeks. I delivered a healthy, baby boy at 39 weeks. Good luck:)

I took baby aspirin throughout both of my pregnancies because I had a sister who died from a blood clot and they were worried about me getting one too. Both pregnancies were very uneventful and my kids are perfectly fine (ages 4 and 6). I think the risk is more in regards to the woman bleeding too much during delivery so they had me stop taking the aspirin oh maybe in the last 2 months of pregnancy or so.

Either way I would discuss your concerns with your OB/GYN.

My doctor told me it was safe to take excedrin migraine because I was having a lot of headaches in the beginning of my pregnancy that would lead to causing pain in my eyes. I have taken it during the first trimester now I am in the 3 trimester and all seems to be well. I have had like 4 sonos because thats just what my doctors office does and everytime my baby is right on track. I did take it with my other two daughters who all came full term perfectly happy and healthy with no issues.

I took a low dose aspirin through my recent pregnancy and can say I delivered a full term, happy and very healthy boy. I don't know about any long term effects, but in his eight weeks he's only ever had a cold - which we've all had at our house.

Double check with your OB, or a different OB for an official second opinion. But, you definitnely don't want to worry about a blood clot, either.

Hi K.. First of all, you must have a very competent doctor if he/she knew about anti-protein C disease. It's very new and not many doctors know about it. When I was pregnant with my 1st child, it was discovered that my platelets were elevated. They didn't know what was going on. They had me do a bone marrow biopsy and all sorts of tests thinking I had Luekemia. It wasn't until years later, when I was done having babies, that my Dad came down with a clot in his lungs that we found out that anti-protein C disease runs in our family. During both of my pregnancies my platelets ranged from 700,000 - 1million. My doctor wanted me to take one low dose aspirin once a day up until the last trimester. I followed the recommendation. I'm not sure if any of this was a direct cause of the aspirin but here's how my pregnancies went: I developed preeclampsia around 5-6 months. I gained over 75 pounds both times. I was put on bed-rest around 7 months. My first baby was born at 36 weeks (my water broke). My second child had to be induced at 35 weeks due to preeclampsia and low amniotic fluid. Towards the end of my pregnancies I seriously thought I was going to die. I was so winded, felt faint and very ill. Luckily, both of my boys (now 7 & 5 years old) turned out to be extremely healthy and intelligent. But, all through my pregnancies I felt like the doctors didn't know how to treat me and I was one big experiment. We ended up adopting our third child (a little girl) because my doctors advised me not to have more. Feel free to email me if you have more questions. ~F.

None of us are doctors - I don't think. However, it would seem that a blood clot would be very dangerous for you and the baby. If you question your doctor's advice, get a second opinion. Please don't believe you are in control of whether your baby grows up to have any issues at all (needs glasses or has ADHD??) or you will blame yourself for any and all issues that you have no control over.

I would call my doctor's office immediately. Baby aspirin (I am assuming you are referring to low dose aspirin) is a confusing topic and people outside and inside the medical community have many opinions. Right now it is essential you have a good trusting relationship with you doctor and that you can talk to him about your concerns.
Good doctors want to know what you are concerned about, even if they have heard it 1000+ times.

Talk to your OB. Pregnant women should not take aspirin. That was made clear w/ both my pregnancies. Since you have a medical reason to take aspirin, you should discuss your pregnancy w/ the doctor recommending the daily aspirin. You should discuss your deficiency w/ your OB. See if the two doctors can discuss and come to a healthy option for both you and your baby.

I took baby aspirin during my first pregnancy and had no issues. I had 2 miscarriages before it so I think she thought it might help. Didn't need it with second one.
